Love the Blu Cantrell reference. MAMAMOO have been around since 2014 and have lots of styles in their music discography. I’d say Latin being the most recurring. And I’m sure plenty others will say, they are vocal queens.
That was fun. Mamamoo had been around for almost 5 years when this MV came out in 2019. They don't stick to any particular style or genre so you can't generalize about their music based on one song, however their vocal arrangements are so distinctive, unique and instantly identifiable that people say Mamamoo is a genre unto themselves. They did carve out their own niche in kpop and they've never complied with kpop's standards regarding beauty, fashion, gender, sexuality or proper behavior by female idols. Naturally they've caught a lot of flak for being different but they've never cultivated a bad girl image and instead they're happy go lucky iconoclasts who use their music to encourage others to do their own thing and be themselves. Gogobebe is the final title track in MMM's four album series 4 Season 4 Color, which is the most complex, ambitious project ever done by a girl group. I won't bore you with an essay on 4 Season 4 Color but in this song they're following up on the #3 title track Wind Flower, which left them heartbroken after a breakup. Gogobebe is the Winter/White song in the series and it came out at the very end of winter in March 2019. The emotional hibernation they experienced after the breakup is shown in the early scenes in Gogobebe where the members are stuck in various ruts: one is housebound & agoraphobic, another is so depressed she can't even get dressed or make it out of the bathroom, another is stuck in a dead-end job in a stifling office environment (low ceiling) with outdated technology, and the other member is going around in circles and her self-esteem is so low even the kids don't respect her and play a prank on her. The invitation to the house party sparks their interest and starts to bring them back to life like the daffodils that just bloomed in my yard as a harbinger of spring. In the MV we see each of them fantasize about the party in their depressed location before they dress up and head on out together. The mischievous kids (representing youth, innocence, fun and high spirits) are back and they switch the door numbers to trick them into going into the wrong house but nothing's going to stop them now and they turn the book club into a party. The switch from 66 to 99 is a pun on Gogobebe, which is aka 9966 with 9 subbing for g and 6 for b. Moonbyul also uses numerical puns in her "9 / 6, 6 19" rap, which is a palindrome with the slash becoming a one. 9 to 6 is the Korean work day and 6/19/14 is Mamamoo's debut date, implying that MMM has been hard at work everyday since then ... and it's time to party! Hope that helps.
@@kudgeond755 Yes, they do deserve it! Let’s keep promoting them as much as we can. Hopefully their world tour will continue to generate buzz and create many new fans. They look really happy and energized these days.
@@moomoobebe Agree. I hope so too. The pandemic probably affected Mamamoo more than any other group because they live & breathe by performing in front of an audience of moomoos. Imo they lost their edge and kinda lost direction when they were forced to be socially distant but moo love on the tour has brought them back to life and rekindled the fire. Plus they're around each other all the time so the magic chemi of their sisterhood has recharged their group warp drive. It's great to see them happy and having fun on stage again and moomoos have been awesome so they deserve credit too.
@@kudgeond755 Yes, agreed. I think that the timing of the pandemic was particularly unfortunate for Mamamoo. There was no way there were going to do a world tour during the 4 Seasons 4 Colors project, but after HIP took off in late 2019 I think they had a pretty viable opportunity to take advantage of their momentum. (With some caveats, such as whether all members were ready to tour, in terms of health and other factors.) The pandemic shut that right down, and as we now know the four members then struggled for quite a while with the question of whether to continue as Mamamoo. At last in 2022 and 2023 they’re giving it another shot. The landscape’s changed a bit, with the arrival of several very popular 4th generation groups, so Mamamoo aren’t going to be able to stand out as much. On the other hand, the big overall increase in K-pop’s reach across the world will probably help them. I imagine they’ll mostly be booking medium-sized venues, and the concerts will sell out quickly and have good buzz. I imagine there’ll be a few variations and new elements for the next phase of the world tour, to keep things fresh. The only thing they are missing is a recent hit of the scale of HIP or Maria.
Finally someone other than me recognizes the similarity to Blu Cantrell's song Hit Em Up Style. Gogobebe also samples Marshmello and Anne-Marie's song Friends. Mamamoo debuted on 9 June 2014 and are recognized as the live vocal queens.
Thank you for this reaction. They are Mamamoo, the vocal queens of Kpop. They've been around since 2014 so it's their 9th year already this June hence the mentioning of 619 on Gogobebe if you noticed, that's their debut June 19. I highly suggest that you watch their Dingo Killing Voice or Immortal Songs Medley. I love your reaction! I watch every Mamamoo reaction I can find, and I really appreciate your perceptive comments. This song and MV are as good an introduction as any. It’s a party song in a minor key, taken from the album White Wind which represents winter. You’re absolutely spot on in noticing their message of loving yourself. Two of their most famous songs with that theme are Yes I Am, and HIP. Also there’s a commercial song called Wanna Be Myself, which draws on that same spirit. Mamamoo covers many different genres, with the common thread that they have outstanding vocals and they know the assignment every time, no matter what style. The rapper, Moonbyul, writes almost all of her own rap verses, and can find something for pretty much every kind of song, including ballads. She even wrote rap verses for a one-off performance by Mamamoo of the Tom Jones song “Delilah”. She is also a wonderful vocalist, and recently had a landslide victory in a singing competition show against other k-pop rappers who also sing. The other three members, Solar, Wheein and Hwasa, are regarded as among the very best vocalists in k-pop, and as a group they blend or contrast beautifully, according to what the song needs. All four of them have successful solo careers. Hwasa’s song Maria (written for herself, Maria being her baptismal name) is probably the solo song with the greatest international reach so far. I strongly recommend reacting to the Killing Voice medley that others have also recommended. One song that is not on that medley is Piano Man, which they released in the debut year. I highly recommend that MV so you can see early Mamamoo. Mamamoo are also known for their crack songs, and so you’ll want to watch Taller Than You/1cm. By the way, if you want English subtitles, always get the MVs from the Mamamoo official channel, and not the upload on Stone Music Entertainment.
MAMA MAMA MAMAMOO!!!! They're aren't your typical kpop girl group. Their debut was in 2014 and they have over 300 titles in their discography. These are women being women, not little girls trying to be sexy. If you want "smokey sensuality" , react to their mv's EGOTISTIC and DECALCOMAINE 🔥🔥
