Video of fully-licensed production of the musical "Mame" performed in San Francisco, CA on August 31, 1980 with an all male cast. This is a piece of LGBTQ history as a series of musicals with all male casts during the 1970's and early 1980's grew out of one of the early gay rights groups in San Francisco.

Anybody watching this now, it's 1/4/2020. I play Vera Charles in this production of Fame. I am alive and well and watching this right now. I'm in upstate New York and I hope you enjoyed it. I'm 89 years old, will be 90 this year. Comments will be appreciated.

@hashburysp @stevenpalmer You were brilliant! I’ve got the original window card poster, and have always wondered WHO/WHOM “Faye” was! I’d love to know more, especially as Vera Charles is a role that I long to play!

The character always had the essence of drag queen (Roz and Lucy were butcher than this guy), so why not go all out with it? The show is lively and spirited, and who knew that "La Cage aux Folles" was just around the corner? I wonder if these were the same people who did "West Hollywood Story," and "Gypsy" with Barry Dennen as Mama Rose, in L.A. a few years after this.

I saw Mame several times, also the awful movie with Lucille Ball. This by far beats her performance! Shame the whole show was not filmed.

I saw Dame Angela Landsbury in the 1983 Broadway revival and She was POSITIVELY AMAZING . That being said , this Mame production was just as good . Nobody can replace Dame Angela but they were all pretty close !!!!! Thank you for posting this , this is my all-time favorite musical PERIOD !!!!!!!

NO ONE IN THIS CAST WAS PAID ONE. SINGLE RED CENT! THEY ALL DID THE SHOW OUT OF LOVE FOR THEATER! I Played the Role of MAME and I paid for my own wardrobe so that the costume budget could be spent on the men that VOLUNTEERED TO DO THIS SHOW! THE ONLY PAID PEOPLE WERE THE SOUND AND THE LIGHTING CREW AND THE MUSICIANS UNION AND THE OWNERS OF THE VENUE AND TAMS-WIDMARK IN NY FOR THE RIGHTS! No jobs were lost because no performers were paid!!!!!
