Why show a fake AI thumbnail when you LITERALLY have 29 minutes of footage of a guy building a REAL ship?

I don't have the patience for it. But my dad did when I was way younger. He bought blueprints from ships at antique shops to build these ships from scratch as well. He had his own little corner in a spare room, where he once or twice a week would hide in a workshop transformed cupboard 😂 1 tube light and magnifiers. He even made his own tools, like adjusted manual dentist drills to drill the tiniest holes in the wooden pulleys used to raise the sails or other things pulled up with pulleys. He used strings of sisal, which he would pull through his little tub with tar to put in between the woodwork on the outside of the ships. "Cause it smelled so real," he said... Proper master pieces that could take up a year or more to build. Made his own display cabinets with proper glass as well. All varnished. He was not a carpenter. Just a general manager at the main office of a warehouse chain. But this, his pencil drawings and paintings, was his way of blowing off steam. There was no internet at that time. Telly was just a few national channels. No mobiles!!!! Creativity is key... and patience! Pure natural skills developed after school. When there was time to be creative. That's how artists are created, I think.. 😊 Nice "simple" video about a very complex and time-consuming art.. Thanks....

I am just in awe with this guy. I just returned to military model making kits after a 25yr break, and this stuff blows my mind. Just purely amazing to watch and so impressed at the logistics of it all.

When I first saw the thumbnail I was CLICKBAIT but then I saw the name, Sir you have my humblest apologies. Yet again you take cardboard that most people would throw out and make something like the 3 ships and as ever the detailing is out of this world. Thank you for taking us on a journey back in time and showing us just what the creators of these formidable ships would have had to do to get the funding to build the real deal.

As a ship builder myself, I can appreciate the care and attention to detail required to build a scale model. Alan does nice work, and the steps taken in assembly show an understanding of design as well as how ships work - both requirements for a good carpenter. ❤

Stunsail (studding sail) yards are NEVER lashed to the main yard, but are run out in , usually in iron hoops. These yards and sails are only set in very light conditions, and , in fact, rarely used.

They're all great but the fact that the Santa Maria crossed the ocean is amazing.

Amazing models. I've seen people build 17th and 18th century ships like these, but their techniques were always quite complex. Your techniques sinplify the building of these ships so much. The results are stunning nevertheless. One detail I would like to see you add to these ships would be cutting out the windows of the captains cabin, covering them with glazed, yellow glass and then putting some flickering LED lights inside the captain's cabin so it will look like candle or oil lamp lights shining through the captain's cabin's windows on the back of the ship. You may as well add the same flickering LED lights to the lanterns on the deck. As for the grating on the upper deck: Cut that out too, so it's actually a hole that allows you to see some of the space below deck. Tiny details like that would massively increase the realism of these model ships. One additional detail to make it look more realistic would be to sow vertical seams into the canvases. This was done in real life to strengthen the canvasses so they won't rip and tear in strong winds. For even more realism, impregnate the canvas (and the flags atop the mast) with something that will harden, like glue or resin. Just make sure that it doesn't create a shiny surface on the canvasses as it dries up. Some type of transparent matte coating. As it dries, put a fan behind the ship, so that the canvasses are bent in the natural way wind bends it in real life.

I must've done it all wrong. My Hull planks were nailed on and it took me days.

😢my brother used to do that when he was a teenager. He'd study books on old sailing ships then build them out of balsa wood, and exacto knives. The rigging too. He'd even have a working rudder so he could sail them at a pond and control them with a string. Then he would set them on fire and sail them away. They were beautiful.

Amazing job! I love masterscrafts like this one i have spent a lot of time making models mainly architecture models this is quite impressive. Although as a portuguese to see a Santa Maria with portuguese red cross sails under the flag of 😊Castilla e Leon aka Spanish flag it kills me
