This type of complaint against HERTZ has been going on for over three years! Why on earth ANYONE would choose to rent a car from this company is beyond me. I hope they are sued into bankruptcy, or at the least a change in so-called "leadership" AND POLICY!!
When returning your car to HERTZ after hours, park it right in front of the entrance, blocking the door if you can. And put a sign in the window that this is a rental return and the rental number or account number. And then, take some pictures of the vehicle AT the Hertz location.
If Hertz are not manning 24/7 then they need a key drop box that can't be accessed afterwards. The car left in a prearranged place and the keys dropped in the security box/slot. This is not rocket science, my local garage used this method when customers dropped off vehicles for repair, outside opening hours.
They are not stolen; that is the point. Hertz has horrible inventory control, they don't know what cars they have or where those cars are at any given time.
Arrest the Hertz CEO for filing false police reports and extradite him from state to state to face these charges in every state where this has happened.
Oftentimes you cant watch the footage after a certain time cause the footage will be deleted. My old part time job had footage only up to 48 hrs, and afterward, they are deleted. If they arrested him 3 years after the car return, most likely footages are gone.
This is why I no longer rent cars from Hertz corporations... Big corporations are often in league with various local law enforcement agencies, as to turn a profit for making theft reports, that are absolutely false... The innocent bears the financially burden of proving their innocence in court; even when they have already proven their innocence at the scene... As shown here, the prosecution will drag charges, thinking the accused will admit fault, all to financially exhaust him/her... This particular innocent renter has the financial means to fight the charges, with documentation of his innocence... Hertz continues to stand by the lie and false report they released to the media. These false reports to law enforcement by Hertz have been ongoing for over 4 years now and nothing has been done to stop them, outside of undisclosed details of settlements. Clearly, there is an ongoing pattern of corruption in play between particular law enforcement agencies and Hertz Corporation.
how tf this company is STILL operating & under ANY name absolutely BLOWS my mind... and at this point, cops should legit ignore all filing charges for cars under hertz ownership
Here is another point no one has brought up. Hertz must have video of the dropoff area. Has to have it. It would show the dropoff & someone stealing it or otherwise.
Good, Hertz is been going down for years. I rented about car 11 years ago threw my insurance company and Hertz tried to hit me up for more money. The car rental was setup by my insurance company and payment was to be paid by them. Then Hertz called me over six months to ask for more money for the car rental. I told them they had to go threw the insurance company and hung up on them when they started to get nasty.
It's amazing to me how aggressive and how quickly cops are to arrest people for "stolen" cars from Hertz. It also amazes me that cops don't understand that Hertz is reckless and careless about accusing people of stealing cars due to their own incompetence of not being able to track their own cars.
Whenever you return a rental get pictures and video it whether your retuning it during or after business hours. AND film it DOWN TO THE SLIGHTEST DETAIL!!
3:17 "In December, (2022), Hertz settled 364 of those cases, paying $168 Million dollars to people who had filed claims, saying they had been falsely accused of theft."
They are currently accusing my nearly 70 year old mother of not returning a car she turned in 3 months ago. They lost a 168 million dollar lawsuit and they're preying on customers.
When I first started driving for uber it was the biggest hassle to go through Hertz for a rental. Through the app they claimed I could rent the car for up to a year but on week 8 I was told I had to come return car. I had 2 different cars in that time, as the first one gave me trouble. They gave me dirty, ashy cars that smelled of stale smoke. I felt that was reflective of Schenectady NY in general, also.
This will only stop when people who work at Hertz start getting charged with filing false police reports and do some jail time. If prosecutors bring charges against lower management employees who actually fill out the paperwork then Hertz will stop this even faster. The CEO and execs can feign ignorance and draw out the legal process. The average employee cannot. And yes you have to go after the average employees because they are ultimately the ones who are not caring to check to see if the cars were returned or not. Their negligence or malice is affecting customers lives. Like the woman who spent 40 days in jail for a crime she didn't commit. Ridiculous!
So you’re saying the people that work at Hertz should stop doing their job. Or they go to jail. I hope the prosecutor will notify them in writing that they’re no longer allowed to do their job. They only know what the computer tells them. Perhaps we should arrest the programmers? What if the person who started this no longer works for the company you’re going to arrest the person who is in solving the problem?
Business trick? People was told to return the vehicle in a self service drop off zone. Hertz then reported a stolen vehicle in return for insurance cover?
I rented a Hertz minivan at Houston International Airport drove home to Iowa went to return it at the Des Moines Airport the Hertz associate said: “Are you sure it’s our vehicle?” There was no record of my rental on their computer system she claimed. They took it back nonetheless and when I asked for a return receipt they jotted out an old fashioned hand written one on the back of a business card. True story! This happened in 2016 looks like I dodged a bullet. Yikes!
I rent from Enterprise. When I return the vehicle I take a picture of the car to prove no damage and I take a picture of the odometer even though the mileage is unlimited. For some reason, when I drop off the car at the airport (where I also pick it up because more cars are available), there is no one to check it in. Years ago there was always someone there to go over the car with you and you handed them the keys. Budget cuts I guess. But, I have no issues with Enterprise except their ridiculous summer rates.
Charges dismissed does not expunge the record. Anybody who does a background check will see these people have been arrested for car theft. For some professions, like teacher for example, the record may prevent them from getting jobs in the future.
so you rented a car in your name. dropped it off left key in the car that was still in your name. We you rent anything you a responsible it unit it get received. I used to work at a renal yard. so-many people said i dropped it off at this time this location. We checked cameras nothing. later we found out they never dropped it off the LIED. I would make sure if i rented anything that it was checked in and i was no longer responsible for it.
The best way of solving this is to force the company to change their business model. The old lets criminalize the customer for some short time profit, does not work, so they should be told as a verdict favoring the customer that ANY AND ALL claims of theft will be ignored by the polce for one year. meaning that even if ALL cars were infact stolen and the company reports this not reaction from the police in one year. if this for any reason causes the comapny to be bankrupt then that is on the comany, they could have done business without having the model of criminalizing their customers, other companies both in USA and other western contries manages this very well, so I find it fair that a verdict will say that Hertz n this case will have any and all claims of theft ignored for one year......
Why would he leave the keys in the car? All of these rental locations have a drop slot to drop the keys INSIDE THE BUILDING.... I'm pretty sure if you rent a car, and then leave the keys in it when you return it after hours and it happens to get stolen, that's all YOUR fault... COMMON SENSE!
Exactly. People are not really understanding what this guy did wrong. If you borrow something from someone or some organization you need to get a return of property receipt. This receipt protect you from criminal and civil liability. You cannot just leave the keys in a car at some location and assume Hertz got their property back
My family has been using Hertz for years and when I was old enough to start renting cars I used them too. When these stories first came to light years ago I closed my Hertz account out of principle and support for the victims. There is so much injustice with these stories and monetary compensation cannot repair emotional trauma.
