I work for a farm here in a suburb just outside of Boston, and learned that New England farmers used to bring their farming equipment down south to Florida, and farm all winter, then reverse the process to get back up home and get ready for the coming Spring in NE each year!

Those small Turnips grow here in Northern England and Scotland We use them mostly cooked and they are very sweet lovely in a vegetable soup with a chicken stock base and whatever other veg you have. Garlic does need a cold period, in permanently warm areas it can be done in the back of the fridge for a fortnight or longer and then laid on wet kitchen roll to start the growth of root before planting out into soil that has been well watered. Garlic needs plenty of water without the soil being a swamp.

Good for him! Best of both worlds. Look at all those dandelions. Love Dandelion tea! Beautiful property in Maine! We used our town's compost one year and nothing grew but kale. Went back to what we used before and our garden grew. Some people may use round up on their yard scraps so be careful with the town's compost. Easy to make your own compost. Onion skins boil to make a tea or out on your plants. Onion skins make quercetin and Vit C .

We turned out backyard into a garden we use cotton seed mulch and pecan shells in our garden. We live in a gated community and we sell our produce and everyone wants the lettuce. We also have lots of pecan trees and persimmon trees in the back of our fence so we go get lots of pecans. Probably have 100 pounds of pecans.

Really nice his compost is free, here in Maryland they sell it at home depot, it's plenty cheap, but free is free. The dollars may sound good, but that's a ton of work by himself. I watched Gardening Naturally with Eliott & Barbara in the early 90's make his starter soil, he used green sand, you can find that episode here on RU-vid.

I enjoyed your two visits with him in Florida and Maine during "The Great American Farm Tour". He had taught you how to use the scythe right? Thanks for this Justin. I thought you were going to see him now on your vacation down to Florida? It's nice seeing this again. Coleman was the guy he used as his mentor and then he tweaks the methods Coleman used. It interesting that the different sands can make a difference in growth on this germinated plants. The brambles management he does on the farm in Maine is incredible too.

5:43, I have to disagree, it IS about the freshness! The organic stuff from the store sat in a truck for a day to three, before it's delivered to the grocery store distribution center. It sits in the warehouse 1-3 days before it FINALLY makes it's way to the store to be sold.

Great to see Jim and hear his progression but a TV show would take him too far from his live style. The health of being grounded in touch with the soil and living plants is ions that are the opposite of what is produced by electronics. Doing video takes time. How could a garden ever be ugly? I bought a house last year and it's a corner lot that gets tons of sun on that corner, I have been ripping up the south lawn and putting in beds like crazy, last year I started with just a few things like tomatoes, cukes, peppers, herbs, squash, etc. and neighbors were drawn to it, walking over to look or stopping cars to tell me how great it looks. When they do I share my yields with them. I have no fence, one neighbor said she hopes no one steals my veggies-- I figure if someone is that hungry they are welcome to take some but no one touches it. This year I'm gonna have 100 sq ft of beds, I'm so excited it's the biggest garden I ever had (being a city gardener I started in containers, raised beds are awesome).

grew up on 10 acres homesteading; to dry hay without bailing it use 2 poles wired at tops as a teepee about 2-3 feet from bottom wire on 3 shorter poles horizontal; then stack loose hay starting at the bottom and moving up; this sheds water and the air rushes in and up the middle. called hay stacks and they move easily to go where hay is heaviest in rows
