You would think the sheer bulk of an Elk would tell you they are dangerous .

I once visited the Rocky Mountains in Colorado and I was looking for a quiet place to relieve myself. After I stopped, I looked around to make sure nobody was in sight. As I looked ahead, I saw a huge elk just chilling out sitting on the ground. He never flinched and I never took another step forward, lol. I took a few pictures of him and just looked at his massive size for a few minutes and eventually went the opposite direction. We can admire these creatures in a respectful and safe manner. I never understand why people get really close to these wild animals. The guy is lucky he wasn't killed.

The elk bull was initially charged with Harassing Tourists, a class E misdemeanor, but the charge was dropped when the herd showed up at city hall. The sheriff stated he wouldn't have room for him in jail anyway until spring when he shed his antlers. The bull is quoted as saying he was considering his legal options.

The elk gave new meaning to "Pressing CHARGES".

My first season working in Yellowstone my roommate and I took a drive through the park and after awhile seen a group of tourists running and we were looking to see what they were running from, nothing was chasing them they were chasing a mama grizzly and a her 2 cubs. We had to find the rangers to protect the bears and the tourists. They just don't learn. Those kinds of mistakes can get you killed.

This man is lucky that he's alive cuz elk are very Territorial and very protected especially when it comes to mating season and there's space but they're a beautiful animal I think everyone should respect them and I'm glad that people are allowed to admire this animal from afar

Elk are NOT 'normally docile' animals.. If you get too close to them (ESPECIALLY during the rut [DOUBLE ESPECIALLY if the dominant bull elk is around]), somebody will get hurt- usually the dumbass tourist..

I've lived in Colorado for 30 years now from Detroit, when I first got here and seen the size of them you couldn't pay me enough to get near one. Yet, it doesn't amaze me how dumb people truly are

I was very lucky to work around Elk on a Christmas tree farm In high School. Owners handled the Elk every day but always did it safely. The only time they didn’t handle Elk was in Rut. Elk are big powerful beautiful animals. That size can be deadly if not respected. My favorite thing about Rut was hearing the big Males sounding off early morning. So loud high pitched squeal. Not the sound I expected lol. I’ll never forget those few years being around them.

Whew! That was a close call. Good thing they decided NOT to put down the Elk, as it was the tourist who got himself into a jam.

Once upon a time, I lived about an hour east of Estes Park and we'd go up that way on the weekends. One of the cool things we saw there was a herd of elk swimming in a lake. Leave the elk alone, dude.

It still just blows my mind just how stupid people are when it comes to WILD animals. Even after all these years. 🤦🏻‍♀️

I once had a bison bull approach me and my friend when we visited Yellowstone back in 01. We respected the animals space and kept our distance, and after a while the bison walked off. It pains me to think how stupid folks can be thinking that these aren't wild animals and they treat it like a damn petting zoo. Play stupid games, win stupid prizes. 🤦‍♂️

Why does everyone think that they are a photographer? I actually am a nature photographer- part of what you learn is HOW to act cooperatively and respect the natural world. And that means sometimes missing a great shot to stay safe, or to keep the wild world safe.

Does a segment next to a sign prohibiting a domesticated animal from the ball field, but these big ass Elk can just hang around and delay a game. Flare guns are a great way to move a large pack of anything.

There needs to be more laws against cell phones.

He should definitely be fined. People ruin everything when they don’t respect the wildlife.

Maybe in school we should teach things like: "What LARGE Wild Animal Means" and "How to be Respectful of Other's Space".

The stupidity and arrogance of our ever growing population is scary. You cant fix stupid, but mother nature can show you the consequences of stupid.

I did something just as stupid, or more so one day. The small herd was lounging at the edge of a grassy bottomland. I realized that I had accidently strolled to within 40 yds. of them, unnoticed. When I got within 20 yds. I stormed into the middle of the group. Fortunately for me they exploded outward away from their beds. I stood there for a moment pondering the stupidity of what I just did. Twenty years later I still shudder as I reflect on that moment. 🤕

They hesitate to put down "domestic" dogs for maiming & killing persons, why would you "put down" an animal protecting themselves in their own habitat? That's like punishing a homeowner for fighting off an intruder🤔 We live in a backwards world.

This was just pure stupidity. They're aggressive during their mating season. Even tourists should know that. In a setting like that, they have no reason to fear humans.

i live near an elk farm where you can go look at them through a fence. remember one time when i was younger a bull kept charging the fence trying to attack us. it was pretty terrifying, definitely gave me a healthy fear of elk

The neck collar is for trouble animals that have been aggressive repeatedly toward people. Chose the wrong Elk to get frisky with.

I saw a man get trampled to death by a mother moose here in Alaska. He wasn't even a tourist. People are disconnected for sure. Get a clue.

I love Estes Park.. it’s incredibly beautiful ! And hiking through the trails, I’ve certainly had close encounters with Elk but I take it seriously to respect their space and I’m so glad the park rangers are holding the person accountable and not bringing harm to the animal who was acting on instinct.. these are beautiful creatures and can still be admired from a distance.

I hope that the elk suffered no damage to his antler....

If I were there I would have encouraged him to try it again and again until the problem is permanently fixed.
