It could be that the mom is envious of her daughter having a hard working, seemingly decent man, that presumably treats her well, IN SPITE OF her hoeing around, he pays the bills, etc...! Maybe Momma wants to subtly sabotage her daughter's good fortune. She may have NEVER had that, and is subconsciously sad that she could get that type of support and care from a man. Never know. I've seen instances of such.
