Fun fact: Heavy metal got it's name partly because of this song. The verse where he said: heavy metal thunder. Really described well heavy metal and well that's how it got the name.
Nice! Another curiosity is the drums in Heavy Metal was a high influence from Mountain. We can see/hear how they got influenced by Steppenwolf, specially "Born to Be Wild". They drinked a lot from this fountain. This song is among the landmarks of Rock history. That moment when a giant event happens that changes the direction of music forever.
The Kinks predate Steppenwolf by about 4 years for what’s considered the first heavy metal song. You Really Got Me. But they are right in that “ heavy metal thunder” aka the sound of a motorcycle more than likely inspired the genres’ name.
Hhhhmmmmmmmmmm! They did that in Wild Hogs staring Tim Allen, John Travolta, William H. Macy and Martin Lawrence. The president of the Deli Fuegos was Ray Liota and at the end of the movie the leader and the father of the current president of the Deli Fuegos was Peter Fonda. There is also a cameo by Paul Sr. and Paul Jr of Orange County Customs. I think this song also appears in Wild Hogs also as well as Lynard Skynard's They Call Me The Breeze.
Just in case you didn't know, young dude... them three badass riders are Dennis Hopper, Peter Fonda (both R.I.P.) and Jack Nicholson. I did notice you referenced the movie title. This tune kicks ass! 🤘🔥🎸🥁
This was from a classic movie called "Easy Rider." These are scenes from the movie. Dennis Hopper is the stache guy. Peter Fonda with the stars and stripes helmut, and that is Jack Nicholson himself in the back seat.
I freekin love freekin magic carpet ride so freekin much . The top 3 that keep swirling around the dome from that era are magic carpet ride, black water by doobie bros and highway star by deep purple.
Don't forget: Nickelback Sum41 Avril Lavigne My Darkest Days Theory (of a Deadman) Loverboy All top quality shit out of Canada. There are some good bands too, such as Rush, and Thousand Foot Crutch
@@nickhaas9185 "Tool Time" was the name of the DIY show that Tim Allen's character, Tim "The Toolman" Taylor and Al Borland were the hosts of, the actual name of the show was "Home Improvement"
Wasn't that when he built up the riding lawnmower and put chopper handlebars on it? He started it up and took off and lost control of it. Good thing he had on a motorcycle helmet on! 🤣🤣🤣
I know this song was the first to use the phrase "heavy metal" but the phrase was used before this song in the William S. Burroughs novel The Soft Machine. The phrase "heavy metal thunder" referring to the sound of a group of motorcycles. I don't recall ever hearing if John Kay got the phrase from the book or not.
Came out in 1969 I think. I was a 13 year old punk back then. I'm now 64 and still dig this song. "Get your motor runnin, head out on the Highway...Lookin for adventure...and whatever comes our way." Classic.
Your videos always make me so happy! You're always so positive and the world needs more of that right now. Being able to watch you react to new music and just be so open to it is awesome.
Steppenwolf’s lead singer, John Kay, has a pretty wild bio. He was born in Germany in 1944, a month after his father was killed in WW2; his mother fled with him as an infant from the advancing Soviet troops in the brutal winter of 1945, only to get stuck in what became East Germany. They escaped again into West Germany in 1949 (another dangerous trek) and emigrated to Canada a few years later.
First few seconds I had to pause. I feel old as sin right now. I'm 49. So this was just a couple years before I was born. But I'm with you jamming to Slipknot and Bring Me the Horizon. I'm happy to still love new rock and metal and not be and old fart that says, "Them kids and their music today." But man. First time "Born To Be Wild?" I'm old.
Having grown up in the '70's I felt that because of bands like Steppenwolf there should have been a fountain of youth for our generation. As we know there was no magic elixir but our music will far outlive us.
Loved hitting the road with this blasting from the speakers from my convertible and just driving .. as for Starbucks, never been there and never will...
the reference to Heavy Metal Thunder was also a veiled reference to to the Vietnam War, which was going on at the time, and the tanks and other heavy metal weapons of war. and the guy with the mustache was Dennis Hopper, the guy in the American flag helmet was Peter Fonda, and the guy in the gold football helmet is Jack Nicholson. this was a breakout movie for all of them.
Great reaction definitely took me back to my bike riding days nothing better than Open Road and a Harley I seen Steppenwolf in Louisville Kentucky in 1969 they were great in concert
I am a young biker, the way I truly learnt to ride, was just to get on my custom chopper, ride into London (or out of it) and just get fuckin lost, ride around for a few hours, then found my way home, no maps, no internet, just me, my bike and the "open" road. Man it's the best feeling
I first watched this movie at a DRIVE IN theater in 71. After the movie me and 2 friends of mine and me went to a beach in Oregon. We were stationed at Ft. Lewis and ran into a bunch of hippies who stole a pig from a farmers ranch and made a big ass fire under a cliff on the beach. We cooked this sucker 4 about 8 hours into midnight. Some people were still eating till daylight the next day. We had to head back to Ft. Lewis before we got our ass in trouble. Good ole days.
This video is from the movie Easy Rider staring Peter Fonda, Dennis Hopper, and Jack Nicholson. You will also like Magic Carpet Ride, and The Pusher. They were the start of heavy metal. Like the song said, "Heavy Metal thunder". Back then they called it Hard Rock.
Not sure how old this song is,but still sounds so good 👍👍 if you haven't already, it'd be awesome to see your reaction to not so typical disturbed, like a reason to fight & hold on to memories.💖💖💖💖 Ya Alex from 🇳🇿🇳🇿
What a great movie, what a brilliant soundtrack... since then a Lot of people want drive a Chopper. Heard it in my VW Bus..... on the way to holidays.....
Yup - Canadian rockers (lead singer came here from Germany as a kid). Also: The clips are from the cult-classic film "Easy Rider" - the guy with the stash is Dennis Hopper, the other is Peter Fonda and the guy on the back is Jack Nicholson.
The movie clips are from the movie "Easy Rider" with Peter Fonda, driving the Red White and Blue Chopper, the guy on the back of with Peter is Jack Nickelson (with the gold football helmet), - the same form "The Shinning" and the dude with the stash you referred to is none then the same dude from "Tremors" Michael Gross- played Burt Gummer in Tremors. So now you got a little inside scope. Also quick note, the Chopper Peter Fonda is riding is also the inspired for the movie "Ghost Rider" movie with Nicolas Cage.
Awesome song. Fun factoid: The SNES had a game called Rock N’ Roll Racing that featured this song as well as Paranoid by Black Sabbath, Highway Star by Deep Purple and a few more. Happiest day of my life the first time I played this and heard these music tracks in the game.
John Kay's mom sneaked him out of East Germany to get his eyes looked at by better doctors. He grew up in Canada, still has a German accent and bad eyesight. You gotta hear Magic Carpet Ride!
Blue Oyster Cult did a great version of this song during the Black and Blue tour. At the Boston Garden Eric Bloom drove a Harley out on the stage and the crowd went nuts! I'm a huge Sabbath fan but they didn't stand a chance up against BOC. You should check out a song from Steppenwolf called "The Pusher".
Alex, as a fellow Texan you should try Upon A Burning Body, they are a band from Texas. They have a song called Texas Bloody Money. It's metal about Texas pride.
Jack Nicolson on the back wearing a football helmet. I laughed my ass off when I saw that scene. You have to find this movie, and watch it. It's Americana culture. You'll love it man. Sad ending though. Both Peter Fonda (Big brother to Jane, and son of the great Henry Fonda) and Dennis Hopper, who's mother is Hollywood legend Hedda Hopper, actress from the 30s and 40s. This is a really great movie Alex. Get a friend, or your mom or someone, make some popcorn, and shut off the phone and watch it. Its called "Easy Rider." Thanks man
you most likly have heard that born to be wild part before,it's been use in alot of movies and/or TV shows for a awesome/comedic effect when someone trys/goes in to be a "badboy". :P
Man you need to do some history research of the music of this time. Your library of badass tunes will explode by experiencing this time period. This is some of the most iconic music of the vietnam war era. This type of music helped define rock for todays young. This will put a twinkle in their eye of your daddy's & grandpa's. Classic
This was the first reference to heavy metal music. You HAVE to watch Easy Rider! It’s an awesome flick. If you pay close attention the guy on the back of the bike is Jack Nicholson.
Fun Fact for you, Alex: The 2 bikers were Dennis Hopper and Peter Fonda, Peter Fonda riding the bike with the American Flag paintjob, which the bike was appropriately named "Captain America" and in the scenes where Peter had a passenger on the back, that passenger was none other than Jack Nicholson These scenes are from the movie "Easy Rider"
💕Theme song from my teens. Bikers, Peter Fonda & Dennis Hopper, pick up Jack Nicholson, a straight laced guy, and take him on the ride of his life. You MUST SEE the movie, Easy Rider. 😎✌
Alex - bravo!! You absolutely got the deep meaning of this song and the movie! Riding a Harley is living wild and free as f*ck!! By the way - this song is where the genre HEAVY METAL got its name from!! So: perfect choice!!
When I go to Starbucks, I take a venti passion tea with 2 pumps raspberry, 2 pumps classic, berry juice instead of water with no berries and light ice.
Found out a long time ago in a interview with Peter Fonda he said the motorcycles weren't made to ride across the highway like they did because they didn't have the type of motors to do that to go cross the states,They did stop riding them for a period of time so they didn't over heat, but they kept doing it so they pulled it off by getting where they had to be towards the end of the movie.
