Also I don't see no one talking about how you should *never* hide under an overpass in the event of a tornado. Unless it has interior gaps in the corners to hide in, hiding in an overpass will 100% get you killed because of the wind tunnel effect kicks in, since most overpasses have hills with shapes that distort into the overpass and easily focus air into it. _The ferocious winds directly hitting the overpass will get focused and rage through it even faster._ (Kinda like how shooting air through a nozzle makes it come out with more force.)

This scene, from the argument in the car to Jonathan’s death was the most powerful scene of the entire film;. Just a few minutes prior, Clark said “you’re not my dad,” then he screamed “Dad.” I felt his pain. Jonathan’s sacrifice for his son was selfless.

The fact that 1. He protected his sons identity is beautiful and 2. The fact that he sacrificed himself for his dog is so powerful. It shows how much that dog meant to the family and it was as important as anyone else. What a good boy

@Angopatfilms Never sacrifice your life for a dog... Will the dog comfort, protect and provide for your wife, children? We have lost perspective on what it is to be human, and the fact we have earned our right to walk this planet moreso than any pet dog breed.

@@backupdancer3720 Your first point makes sense, but your second point is so egotistical. "we have earned our right to walk this planet moreso than any pet dog breed" they earned their right to walk the planet too, they won the game of evolution over millions of years through connecting with humans, securing a stable host to mooch off of for their whole lives. Yes we conquered the planet, but to say a dog will never comfort your wife or child is absurdly callous and cold-blooded

@FlameConvoy Are we really doing this..? OK... 1. I have no idea how placing human life above that of man-made pets is egoistical...unless breeding dogs to match the many tastes of humans is also egotistical? 2. The vast majority of dog breeds are man-made...with the vast majority of those man-made breeds being 200 years old... Humans' ability to create dog breeds as tools, and now, as 'cute pets' suggests an uncomfortable yet unavoidable fact... 3. The average lifespan of a dog is 12 years... The average lifespan of a human is over 70 years... Whilst a human can choose to love a dog as a human and take comfort from its company, society (and the law) certainly does not have to recognise the dog as a replacement for a human...in spite of the recent trend in dogs being treated like humans. 3. You deliberately ignored the 'provide for' in your rebuttal... perhaps in order to make your comment sound less 'absurd'... OK...

The idea of Superman or his dad prioritizing secret identity over saving people is insane to me This movie goes out of its way to go "no, saving people is WRONG" at EVERY TURN. How self-righteous is this man that he couldn't think of any alternative except playing martyr? Not only that, Clark could have very easily worn a goddamn mask, put a towel over his head, anything, because it's not like people will think Clark could do any of that. This is like Superman 101. God, I fucking hate this scene.
@zhengyingli
@zhengyingli Год назад
It's not that insane if you've read Superman #1 from 1939 - the Kents told young Clark to not use his powers to help others until he grows up. It's not a "saving people is wrong" message as much as "you need to wait until you're ready to deal with the consequences."
@jamyskis
@jamyskis 7 лет назад
The death of Jonathan Kent was the only scene that I didn't like in MoS, if only because dying so stoically in a blaze of glory just to protect his adopted son is quite out of character. He was supposed to be the everyman raising the superman, so when he stands there like a badass, raising the hand of authority to take his fate like a boss, it just seems completely at odds with everything that Jonathan Kent represents. Also. the very point of Jonathan's death in Superman lore is to make Clark realise that he is not omnipotent, that there are limits to what he can do. In MoS, he could have quite easily rescued him, but chose not to in order to obey his final wish.
@Joshpl
@Joshpl 7 лет назад
Clark grew stronger as he grew older. At this point, he would not have been able to save his dad without revealing his powers to all those people. He trusted his dad so much that he was willing to let him die. This still taught him there are limits. He couldn't just do what he wanted to here, despite having all the power to do so. There would have been potentially dire consequences had he saved his dad. This was a great scene, full of emotion, if you're willing to see it.

@VioletGrey

You are incorrect about the fate of the Kent's in Superman lore. What you are referring to is the death of Johnathon Kent in the Reeves movie that had been copied by other media. In the original Superman run both the Kent's died of natural causes before Clark left for Metropolis. In the Man of Steel reboot in 1986 the fact that both of his parents lived to see him Supermanning was a BIG BIG change that a lot of people objected to. Then, in the 2012 New 52 reboot the Kent's both die before Clark starts his Superman thing. The Kent's don't die in Superman: The Animated Series, and are still alive into Justice League. Johnathon Kent does not die in Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman, and Johnathon Kent's death is telegraphed as a long running plot device for almost 5 of the first 8 seasons of Smallville. So as you can see, the death of Johnathon Kent on;y means whatever the writers want it to mean in the story that's being told. There is no canonical way for it to happen or mean for it to hold because it doesn't occur in every re-telling of the story.

It's a beautifully tragic scene on so many counts. I kind of understand when people throw shade at Jonathan rushing into the tornado himself instead of sending Clark in with all his powers, which would've gone unnoticed through all that mayhem. But as I rewatched MoS several times, the scene started to play out more like a parable than an actual death in the family. Just before the tornado scene, Clark had been complaining, ostensibly about doing something flashy spectacular using his powers, and Pa Kent had been telling him to bide his time, to lay low, to rein in his ambition find purpose and grounding in the mundane. The idea of being Superman wasn't even a gleam in anyone's eye at this point. Much earlier in the plot during the bus-saving incident, Pa Kent acknowledged that Clark was sent to earth for a reason, but also that it could take Clark his whole life to discover what that purpose was. All Jonathan wanted was for Clark not to stop trying. Here Jonathan was trying to teach Clark the other end of his purpose, that there were limits that Clark had to respect in spite of his powers. This calls back nicely to Clark's conflict in the 1978 Superman film, hearing Jor-El's voice through the clouds about not interfering with human history on the one hand, and remembering how he blamed himself over being unable to save Jonathan from a heart attack despite "all those powers." Here in MoS Jonathan was firm about Clark never revealing his powers to a world that wasn't ready. He drove it home using one of the most powerful lessons Clark had yet to learn - to be willing to sacrifice everything for what you believe is right.
@blkwng
@blkwng 3 года назад
I for one hated this scene. I understand what the impact was meant to be, but it seemed stupid to me. People try to attribute this scene to teaching Clark his limits, but this teaching came from a place where the Kents were trying to teach Clark how to be part of humanity, not use his powers to save them. Ive always disagreed with others on this point. If Clark where to truly follow his father's teachings, he should have learned to be part of humanity while ignoring his powers. Yet many people arrive to what imo is the wrong conclusion that the Kents were teaching Clark to be a hero. To me, this was a fatal mistake in this movie. For all intents and purposes, Clark should have grown up trying to be as normal as possible, despite his powers, and not become superman. So when he did become Superman, to me it wasn't heroic. It wasn't because of his choice and his upbringing. It was because it was fate. He became Superman because the movie required him to be Supefman, not because his parents taught him to become this hero in time. That's the reason why MoS has poor reviews all over. And I agree with those reviews. They needed better character development.
@dustinakadustin
@dustinakadustin 3 года назад
@@blkwng they handle the death of Jonathan Kent way better in the original film and the comics. A heart attack perfectly explains Supermans limits while inspiring him to save as many people as he can. All Pa Kent taught him in this film is that people would hate him and maybe he should let kids die. They actively discourage him becoming a hero and doing what's right.

THIS whole entire scene is highlighting above all...the humanity and humanness of Clark (not the SUPERMAN he is meant to be and has yet to become...but the wounded, alienated, socially rejected, ridden with anxiety and hesitation to reveal his true self....human aspect of him) ...and how Jonathan Kent was first and foremost HIS REAL FATHER...not just his guardian who found him on the field...as teenage Clark wrote him off as, just before Jonathan sacrificed himself for him... It puts Clark, emotionally, on a path to realization that his father's life and sacrifice holds such great value, not only because of his father's belief that ''the world wasn't ready yet...'' which clearly imprinted on Clark till much later in life, when he's talking to Lane....but also because in accepting how...to his dad, Jonathan Kent, his life and sacrifice could not be greater than his own son's destiny...in which Jonathan Kent always believed in and raised him accordingly so...even though if he was afraid that the world would reject him...he understood the level of GOOD he can bring to this world...and hoped he one day would...''when the world is ready''... also...more technically speaking...ANY PARENT would have done the same...it's your teenage son and wife in danger...you rise up to be the Hero, who makes sure everyone is safe and sound....NO!!! he didn't just go back for the dog...he was rescuing other people prior and checking on cars to make sure everyone's safe...being a figure of leadership and almighty bravery, when he could have been selfish and stuck to ''his own''....he didn't...he ROSE UP to the extremely stressful occasion,...and as things unfolded super fast with a friggin' hurricane at bay...it's highly probable that not everyone is in their best judgement to weigh things in as what should be done...and which way to go about this...it's not just the dog...it's about the emotions you have for someone that you LOVE and the experiences you've shared...for some...their dogs, are the ONLY source of LOVE in their lives... If it weren't for the dog stalling, shying away, feeling scared and staying in the car...as he's trying to pull him out...ON TOP OF A FLYING VEHICLE...landing on them and trapping them in...(raising the stakes people!) ...both Jonathan and the dog...would have made it back safely...which is what made Clark must have though right before he obliged and listened to hIS DAD!!! telling him to go back...He's GOT IT!!! Unfortunately though, He didn't....because that's DRAMA and CHOICES and CONSEQUENCES and characters being in dilemma...it's called multi-layered, emotionally gripping storytelling... and at the end...Zack Snyder clearly shows CLARK, briefly looking back to the people, to whom he might have revealed his true self ...in distress...READY & DETERMINED to GO SAVE HIS DAD, in fact he motions to go, except....!!! THAT'S when it all stops!!! Time slows down...Jonathan Kent accepts it's already too late...his ankle is broken, he can't run...the hurricane's eye is right behind him....he's going to die, but not without a cost...HIS SON'S IDENTITY intact over his own damn life...and what comes forth is the UTTER COMPLETE TRUST AND FAITH, that Clark had in his Dad not only to do the right thing...but also in his judgement and care as a REAL FATHER TO HIM...NOT just as his Guardian...in that moment, he suffers in having said things he didn't mean to his father, being an angry teenager...but at the same time...accepts his DAD'S ultimate, unconditional LOVE...clearly pouring out through both hearts and eyes, in silence....in a cinematically SUPERIOR moment....captured quite beautifully, effectively dramatically POTENT and full of meaning, conveying so many different ends of the spectrum emotionally for these two characters.... in between the subtle nuances and looks, without words...just music and emotions...POWERFUL STUFF... HE WAILED...HE SCREAMED IN DISBELIEF...while he was also completely BELIEVING IN HIS DAD'S VISION FOR HIM...whether that was right and wrong of them...it' a sign of TRUE LOVE :)

This particular scene has more impact on my emotions in Man of Steel than the traditional 1978 version of Superman with Christopher Reeve, especially since his father signaled him not to do anything so that he would protect his identity from his Kryptonian power. Why cant Jonathan get martha to safety and let "Clark" go get the dog with that in mind? It does not take that much Brain power... And no he would not be exposing himself.. Hell even if he were to kick a car so it flew away nobody would think that its him! I mean shit he is standing in the middle of a bloody Tornado! I actually like this movie but there are just some things like this that make no sense at all..

Johnathon Kent is a husband and a father. First priority; make sure his family is safe. It doesn't matter if you're son is Superman or not; that's your son.You protect your family first.That's what men do. Johnathon is committed to the idea that his son keep his abilities a secret. There is no compromise in that, not under any circumstances; not even to save his own life. You may call it stupid but you are not Clark Kent's father. How far would you go to protect your son?

Michael Schinke if I were Superman's father I would trust him to be able to save a fricking dog. it's not that big of a deal
@VioletGrey
@VioletGrey 7 лет назад
Atticus F But Johnathon Kent isn't Superman's father; there is no Superman at this stage. He's father to Clark; a 17 year old kid on the verge of going to college. He raised him and protected him. He doesn't know the full extent of his abilities; we see that he is strong and tough but we don't know how far that goes. I don't know much about being a father but I assume that part of the gig is that you put your child's well being and safety above all other concerns no matter how easy something might seem. Maybe that's not your idea of fatherhood but clearly it was Johnathon's.
@atticusf7187
@atticusf7187 7 лет назад
Michael Schinke idk...putting your child's wellbeing above all other things seems like a pretty overly protective parenting method don't you think? The process of letting your children go and learning to trust them is what a true parent must go through

The performances and music are what make this scene. Henry’s scream at the end is particularly incredible. I still prefer it when Jonathan dies of a heart attack because it makes Clark learn that despite having amazing powers, he’s still not perfect and he can’t save absolutely everyone no matter how hard he tries. It’s just personal preference

Why do movies feel the need to kill Jonathan Kent? He outlives Clark in the comics. Superman isn't Batman, and he isn't Spiderman, his parents lived long lives, until Jonathan died of natural causes a full decade (in real time) after Clark was killed by Doomsday, and came back. Same thing with Barry Allen, until New 52 came along and killed Nora Allen for no reason, Barry's parents outlived him by two decades.

Potato Because it was stupid, Clark totally could have gone and saved the dog because he's younger and faster not to mention nothing would happen to him. I don’t think people really understand this scene unless they’re parents themselves. Here’s a scenario for anyone who is a parent: Let’s say there is a huge fire in your home and your whole family gets out safely but you’re trapped. You have a 17 y/o child who can probably rescue you and they’ve got a good shot. Let’s say it a 75% chance that he can rescue you and you both can get out safely. But...there is a 25% chance that both of you will be trapped and killed by the fire. How many people would willingly want their child to run into danger for you? I’d never want to place my children in ANY life threatening situations...especially not to help me. Jonathan Kent (and Clark for that matter) did not know the full extent of his powers. They didn’t know if he was stronger than an F-5 tornado. But that wasn’t the point. Jonathan didn’t want Clark to risk getting hurt and more importantly, he didn’t want his identity to be exposed. It’s the ultimate parental sacrifice.

Entirely correct except Jonathan most likely did know the extent of Clark's powers hence the conversation between him and lois and earlier between him and jonathan in the car. Jonathan wanted clark to live a full and happy life hence the talk of living in the countryside, on a farm that would be his own with a family etc. and not to be hounded like a god or savior for his powers which is why he didn't want anyone to witness clark using his powers

I still think this death could have been avoidable. Clark could have ran over there at the same speed as Johnathan and make it back in time. Just without the risk of a sprained ankle. The thing I liked about the old way Johnathan used to die, (dark I know) with dying of a heart attack it thought Clark that not matter how many powers he has he can't save everyone. I think this could have been totally avoidable. Still could have saved the family dog. But hey, that my thoughts.

Then the people would've figured out who Clark really was If you watched Batman vs Superman, then you would've know why Johnathan didn't want to expose his power The media, people and religion will freak out, they will make him an outcast and reject and Clark was 19 that time and Johnathan didn't want him to experience something like that at a young age

Yeah, but that's the point of Memento. It was a brilliant tale of a man with long term memory loss and you're caught remembering things as he does. Superman doesn't have this issue. Zack Snyder seems to. There was no present moment until the last 45 minutes of the movie and even then I was waiting for someone to wake from a dream or some other ex machina.
