Man Straps Down His Home as Milton Arrives in Florida

CNN's Brian Abel spoke with a man originally from Puerto Rico who was seen strapping down his Orlando home.
Video: CNN
Hurricane Milton hurled rain, tornadoes and tropical storm-force winds at the U.S. coast Wednesday on the storm's steady, potentially catastrophic march toward Florida, where officials issued a final plea to residents to evacuate or face grim odds of survival.
The National Hurricane Center stressed that it was not certain where Milton’s center would come ashore Wednesday night because the storm's path might “wobble,” but the entire Tampa Bay region and points south were at grave risk. Tropical storm-force winds began lashing the coast Wednesday afternoon.
“This is it, folks,” said Cathie Perkins, emergency management director in Pinellas County, which sits on the peninsula that forms Tampa Bay. “Those of you who were punched during Hurricane Helene, this is going to be a knockout. You need to get out, and you need to get out now.”
Milton, which has fluctuated in intensity as it approaches Florida, was a Category 3 hurricane Wednesday afternoon. It was expected to remain a hurricane after hitting land and plowing across the state, including the heavily populated Orlando area, through Thursday.
Tampa Bay, near the top of a long stretch of coastline that could be in the bull's-eye, has not taken a direct hit from a major hurricane in more than a century.
With the storm weaker but growing in size, the surge was projected to reach as high as 12 feet (3.6 meters) in Tampa Bay and up to 13 feet (4 meters) farther south, between Sarasota and Fort Myers.
Mary Ann Fairman, 84, was among roughly 1,000 people at a shelter in West Bradenton. She stayed home during Helene but packed up blankets, snacks and toiletries and left this time.
“The Gulf is practically in our backyard,” she said.
In Pasco County, home to over half a million people in bedroom communities for Tampa and St. Petersburg, officials said shortly before noon that they were getting ready to take buses off the road.

How does this proect against lateral pressures? This only works to preventing upwards pressures from wind maybe (even then the roof is rather weak and can only hold 30 lbs per sqft). This does nothing for the lateral pressures from wind and water this are much more likely and forceful.

Tying down his roof isn't going to prevent much damage if the storm surge reaches 5+ feet and the entire house becomes a swimming pool. Also, the fact that he secured the strap ends so far from the roof edge shows he doesn't understand physics. Their excessive length is going to magnify the force they experience if the wind tries to lift the roof. He should've made them as short as possible by running them straight down from the roof edge at a 90 degree angle. Even worse, the straps being fixed out in the open leaves them completely exposed and vulnerable to being severed by flying debris. What's going to restrain the roof then? He worked hard, but he definitely didn't work smart. All he did was expend effort on an ineffective, poorly thought out and executed countermeasure and show others what not to do.

Yeah but I feel like the execution could've been pulled off better with the roof design. Notice how they crushed some ridge vents, could calculate putting some solid curved plates to rest the straps on that cover the gap between boards at the ridge. Just hate that they caused damage just trying to secure it from later damage but love the setup.

That roof is destroyed either way if they become necessary. If there's enough lift that those straps are needed, then that beam I'll be crushed in each of those spots. This isn't a thing for a reason, it doesn't work. I'm not saying it can't, just not like this. Need a much wider contact with the roof. That roof is already damaged and I doubt his insurance will cover it since it was self inflicted. Been through or on scene for every hurricane in Florida since andrew, and some out of state, have yet to see these attempts work without destroying the roof in the process. It'd be nice if it did though and I don't blame him for trying. But he's already paying for a new roof, he just doesn't know it yet.

It won't. The entire roof framing should have been secured with hurricane ties when it was built. Being he's in Orlando, well inland from the brunt of any storm, this is most likely a waste of money. Even if the winds get strong enough, they will more likely blow all the shingles off and the house will be trashed from the water damage anyhow. That said, it would be effective possibly in a tornado for saving the entire roof from taking off. Maybe.

This is actually pretty normal in wood houses (there are very few of those left, and decreasing rapidly) in Puerto Rico, and it does work wonders. Having said that, houses in Puerto Rico don't use shingles, which is I'd say what could make this work less effective/not work in comparison to Puerto Rico. Wood houses in Puerto Rico use mostly big metal sheets for their roof. The closest to shingles some houses use are ceramic tiles, but they're not used on wood houses, plus they're installed on top of concrete roofs for aesthetic reasons. If I were him, I'd buy a couple of tarps, a bunch of 2x4's to pin down the tarps, and then use the straps on top to help prevent the shingles from flying away and to prevent air from getting inside the roof, which is the real killer with roofs. But yeah, I'm kinda curious to see if it works as well as in Puerto Rico. To people bracing for the hurricane: Stay safe! If you don't feel safe, just seek refuge. Better safe than sorry.
