I couldn't agree more. We had a similar show in France in the 2000's and the 2 women where always judging, talking to these people like there were their moms. They were SO irritating and it seemed like they couldn't understand why these people were living like this. I don't know when I came to understand that too in my life (when I was a teen I think) but I try to spread the same message around me. It's so important and can really make a difference.

It's very hard to lose a spouse. I have had a difficult time since my husband died. Sometimes it's because I figure it's only me eh why bother? Losing my husband and then my friend who lived in our mother in law apt was indescribably difficult. No one wanted to visit. I don't want to assume things about this guy. But whether this gentleman had the skills or not; Mothers and fathers, if you read this, teach your sons how to cook/clean/sew. I've got 2 men living opposite me, who's parents always pampered them and said; 'You'll find a wife to do the sewing and cleaning.' They're now 50 and they eat microwaved meals and wash their clothes with handsoap in the sink. Whether this gentleman was capable of this or not, doesn't matter, it's unclear. But please do not only teach your daughters how to be independent, *also* the boys. Edit: I do not assume this man does not know how to clean or cook. I merely stated that many men especially his age, had never been taught by their parents. And therefore, grief-struck or not, would be unable to clean/cook, if they wanted to.

I'll answer that for him, from an entirely personal perspective: I lost both of my dearly loved parents, my son, and my newborn baby girl, all within one year's time. My sister and her husband, and my brother and his wife, while knowing that I had suffered the greater loss among us, were also grieving heavily for our parents/in-laws (they were wonderful people, much loved by many in our city). I wasn't about to burden them by asking for help of any kind, even though such "simple" things as grocery shopping and laundry would have been sufficient, had they been able to offer it. The survivor often doesn't want to let others know how much they're hurting, and (we) tend to say that "everything's fine, I'm doing well," when in reality, the truth is exactly the opposite. It's been 14 years now since all the deaths in my family, but I'll never forget that extremely difficult time, and I hope I always show compassion to others who go through such a terrible time (and that did happen to three families over a two year period in my former city, and I was able to help them deal with the grief, though just one person died in each family, not four of them in one year).

This poor man. To lose his wife and best friend...it's no wonder he stopped caring about how he lived. Loneliness is hell.

I'm addicted to watching these and this was one of my favourite episodes. They did a great job on Alans home and he was so genuinely happy and grateful for their help. I can tell he really meant it when he said he will keep it that way when they left.

This is a clear case that shows that the government must start providing cleaning services for its citizens.
@popazz1
@popazz1 4 года назад
The government doesn't have a bottomless pit of money. Plus there are any number of agencies out there which are available to help those who need assistance. I've recently begun using Age UK for help with domestic chores which I now struggle with. Yes I must pay an hourly fee though it's not extortionate. And for those who are unable to fund domestic help there are other routes that can be taken. Where the issue lay is the lack of knowledge of what is available because the government is lax at providing information. There's millions unclaimed by those who could use the financial assistance. For those with complex needs it is usually only identified when he/she ends up in hospital, or if they have a good GP who can recognise when a patient is struggling and can be pointed in the right direction.

Depression is so crippling and sometimes it feels like there's no way to crawl out of it. I love these episodes because there is a complete lack of judgement and a job well done. I like to believe that the first night in their "new" home was the best night of sleep they've ever had. 🖤

I can't believe that carpet was blue!! I was amazed. I'd rather clean his home than the ones that have all the different kinds of poop. I think he'll keep it going as well. He's over a lot of his grieving and that will make the difference.

I can see how that sort of thing can happen especially if you suddenly find yourself alone and isolated with no support that was once there. Great there was a crew to help him get back on track....however he looked capable and should have been part of the clean up process to help him have some pride it getting his place back to normal. He may of course have health issues and not be able to do any lifting but as someone who is smoking 10’s of cigs a day....he could pick up a few!

A fair amount of the comments talk about the guy and assume his wife did the cleaning or his parents never taught him etc. But that is exactly what they were talking about at 3:33 Don't assume you know what happened to these people. We will never truly know the whole picture, especially on TV shows like this. Instead, we should learn from these kind cleaners and have the same perspective. Don't judge, be there for your family or friend. If the job is too big, there is no shame in asking for help.

I really hope the hoarders are receiving proper professional aftercare because oftentimes if you just go in and clean and leave them to it it'll revert back into a mess.

If we lived in tribes this wouldnt happen cos the elders would step in and the whole tribe would support the tribe member that was grieving. Sadly, our society is a chaotic mess of lonely people without any contact for support. Most dont even know who lives next door to them.

glad the guys were able to help out, I can sympathize with the older gentleman, although I'm only 53 now, back 7 years ago my dad died and i have no brother or sisters so i was forced to deal with the loss most alone, i tried really hard to get some assistance from my local mental health services clinic here in Canada, but they turned me down many times because they are bugged way down with homeless drug addicts constantly overdosing, so they had no time have no for grieving people who become deeply depressed and had thought of suicide, So ive been doing my best to focus on the positives much as I can, but to truly move on and get to work again i still need some help but as times goes on the health clinic keeps getting more and more druggies on their hands and i have no money for a private clinic...

I tend to do the same thing, but not with all the clothes (and my parents are still alive.) I heard someone made 'memory-quilts' from old T-shirts and clothes, that might be an idea if you ever get to the point of letting go enough to alter them.

That is what I loath carpets! I prefer hardwood or laminate , and if you want something soft on the floor then have rugs .Now social,services should keep an eye on this man so it doesn’t get that way again.

I believe a woman in a man's life is a great gift from God as well as a husband in a woman's life. God I need I life partner... Am scared of living a lonely life. It's not easy for these people and it's not their intentions to live in dirty homes.
