Dr. Natalie Strand, an Associate Professor of Anesthesiology in the Division of Pain Medicine, at Mayo Clinic, in Phoenix, AZ, and Dr. Jewel Kling, a Professor of Medicine from the Division of Women’s Health Internal Medicine, at Mayo Clinic, in Scottsdale, AZ, review their article appearing in the July 2024 issue of Mayo Clinic Proceedings, where they note transgender and gender diverse persons continue to face numerous health inequities due to stigma and discrimination, making them especially vulnerable to a variety of medical conditions and comorbidities, including a higher prevalence of chronic and persistent pain. Drs Strand and Kling emphasize it is critical for all physicians become knowledgeable on the best practices for performing culturally agile and sensitive histories and physical exams with this population as it pertains to their general wellbeing, but also with regards to pain and perioperative care.
