Managing Director vs Partner Big 4 (Should you go direct to partner?). Many law firms and Big Four firms have created interim steps or roles between senior associate and partner. For example, EY have added in the Executive Director and Associate Partner roles, and KPMG have added in the Managing Director role.
Whether or not you are considering Managing Director vs Partner at your Big 4 firm, or Executive Director vs Partner at your Big 4, you need to understand the intentions for these roles. Are they a career destination, a stepping stone to make partner, or both?
If you opt for the Managing Director, Associate Partner or Executive Director role will you be precluded from going for partner at a later date if you change your mind?
