The Fleurieu Swamps network is a unique and nationally recognised, critically endangered ecological community found only in the Hills and Fleurieu region.
Characterised by their reedy or heathy vegetation, Fleurieu Swamps occur along low-lying creeks and flats in the catchment areas of Tookayerta, Hindmarsh, Parawa, Myponga, Yankalilla, Currency Creek, and Finniss. The swamps hold significant cultural and ecological values, supporting hundreds of species of plants and animals, many of which are nationally threatened and found nowhere else.
The swamps once covered approximately 2,000 hectares. Less than half now remain, and most are highly fragmented and often heavily degraded due to vegetation clearance, reclamation, and weed invasion. Of the areas left, only about 2% can be considered in near-pristine condition, making the protection, restoration, and active management of all Fleurieu Swamps vital for maintaining the region's unique biodiversity.
In this video, our Regional Ecologist, Luke Price, discusses the incredible biodiversity supported by the swamps, the threats they face, and how they are managed.
