In the words of Project Binky - "make the noise"! Nice new toy Charlie and it's good that it showed up the error in the helix before you got any further on. And possibly consigned what turned out to be perfectly good locos to the scrap heap. It has probably paid for itself already in that regard. Having seen the amount of engineering you've put into this helix I now realise mine was doomed to failure from the start, but we live and learn! Cheers

Well done, Charlie! Although my gag reflex did kick in when you climbed inside the helix. Hello Charlie. Success well done. The mini level makes a difference in this height & carpentry format for the model railroad. Couplers are tricky due to their shanks sometimes annoying depending on the car body from the coaches. Well like the Chessie System old logo : "For Progress" your layout is working well I'm pleased , as for the half inch plywood or 1/4 inch hopefully you'll get a good quality soon. I know this lockdown is a headache. I'm backed up here in the states with a lot of other wood related & plastic projects. Fantastic Charlie, as normal a very interesting and informative video, you are modeling on the very cutting edge of engineering. Your accuracy is amazing. Those locomotives look fantastic climbing the helix. I did wonder if at one stage you would have to double head (just like the famous leckie incline). You've worked so hard and I'm delighted to see your success in conquering the mountain. I can see in the future trains arriving in Barnstaple and at a little lower level emerging from the tunnel. The photo opportunity is endless. As always you and your family stay safe, see you on the next one Eddy xx

The helix and extension to the viaduct look great. All that hard work has paid off. As soon as you showed the new digital level I knew which you tube video you had watched! Confirmed by the 'vertical curve comment'. Although it is an N gauge layout it is still interesting. Cheers, George

Hi Charlie, brilliant video as usual, I bought one of those percentage levels from Aldi, it also has an arm that levers out from the top which actually shows the gradient which was very helpful as I built my gradients. They all seem to work so far, so fingers crossed as I lay track up my last gradient all is good! Always like an interruption from Mrs Chadwick, Mrs Exehaven seems to be like a moth to a light bulb as soon as I start filming, anyway beautiful sweeping curves and I mean the layout! Cheers for now Charlie John

Thank you for the usual well informed and informative video. I use Hornby close couplers on my mixed rakes of Hornby & Bachmann coaches and they seem to work fine on minimum No3 curves.

Thanks David but it’s on the inclines that the coupling issue becomes more prevalent.

What a fantastic result Charlie! Those Hornby Pullmans make or break for most locos with their pick up arrangements behaving like handbrakes, fantastic to see the stock conquer the grade. I'm not looking forward to doing my 4 lane helix shortly but the digital level is certainly the way forward. Will look fantastic once the scenery is complete!

@@ChadwickModelRailway No not at all Charlie! What a terrifying thought 😂 My monstrosity will be using a minimum internal radius of 1600mm to 1800mm. Jason Woods "The escarpment" layout has set the standard for helix builds, so I think the bar has been set. Regards, Ben.

Nice vid. All of this is a good reminder that planning the helix is crucial. The rise must be enough to clear the track below, allowing for the thickness of roadbed, upon completion of the first revolution. The radius needed to do that can be calculated as the rise divided by the quantity of the decimal of the grade percent, pi, and 2. Ex: for an N scale helix rising 2.75" each revolution, the radius curve for a 1% grade is 2.75/(.01*3.14*2). About 44".

I think you’ve hit the nail on the head Donald, it’s no walk in the park. I now have various items of rolling stock to modify so they can survive the pressures of the Helix.

Excellent and interesting as always. Thanks. It is of particular interest to me as I am reconstructing a helix to go from 4-track to 5-track with a particularly difficult gradient on the inner track - radius 1 at about 1 in 28 which is about the minimum possible with sufficient head clearance. Judging from train speed variation I too have a problem with varying gradients and will now get hold of the marvellous digital level gauge you used. It could be a life saver. Incidentally, I use a 1 in 42 gradient on my mainline as you are now doing. This was chosen as the shallowest gradient that still looked like a gradient. Everything much less steep just looked like level track.

A great update Charlie. When I was watching your previous video on getting stock up, something did seem off, but I didn't mention it only because i couldn't figure out quite what was making me think that.
