Manasija is one of the most famous of the monasteries of the Serbian Othodox church. Situated two kilometres north of the town of Despotovac, in the Resava river valley, Manasija was built by king Stefan Lazarević from 1407. to 1418. It is fortified by high walls, which was important in the medieval times as protection against the Otoman onslaughts. The monastery is known for it's very valuable fresco paintings, and was one of the most important Serbian cultural centers in the medieval times.
