I'm American and I have lived in Manaus on and off for the past 20 years. Your video is a tourist view of the city and life in Manaus. I have a farm a day travel from Manaus and these are very hard working people and they don't like people filming their sometimes dire situations. Manaus has no roads that connect it to the rest of Brazil so the river is their highway. The free zone (Industrial District) was created to help Manaus by providing a tax fee zone that parts could be imported and products manufactured for the rest of Brazil and thus providing an economic benefit for them considering their situation. There are a number of river boats that go from Manaus to Belem (the ocean) ((7-days)) truly an adventure of a lifetime. The Amazon basin is the last frontier of truly unspoiled nature in the world and you should put it on your bucket list if you love nature and beautiful people will welcome you with open arms.

Fun fact: Inside of the boat, on the sides, it's written "salmo 91". This is a reference to the famous Psalm 91, which is very important for the religious people here in BR, and I quote: _"I will say of the Lord, “He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust"_

@@benajminpadilla6360 I’ve watched all of his videos since he was not much more than a kid and enjoyed almost all of it. He used to try to show things beyond the stereotypes. But in Brazil, he seems to be showing most of the stereotypes...danger...drugs, poverty.....everywhere he goes, and not all socio-economic levels, only rich and poor, the CONTRAST. Most of Brazil is in between. I’ve been to Brazil several times, from Rio to Manaus to much of the Northeast, and while it’s true you have to be aware and be careful, I’ve never felt in danger or even nervous. Life for most Brazilians can be quite mundane, and I know that’s not interesting. But it is contrary to the headlines and the stereotypes, which he used to proudly say he’s going beyond. The repeated story seems to be the people are poor and live in constant danger, but they are resilient and friendly in spite of this. That’s true for many, but not most.

@@itsjustme4848 Thank you for you comment, Dan! I'm brazilian, from Recife, and I agree to all that you said, life here is different but much of it is quite mundane for most people and that kind of content doesn't generate as much engagement from international viewers as stereotypes do. I think that this sensationalist reporting does no justice to the beauty and friendliness you find here all around, it's very unfair. It's like talking about California only in terms of homelessness, wildfires and earthquakes...

I visited Manaus almost 20 years ago with my sister. We took one of the passenger boats from Belem up the Amazon River to Manaus. Sleeping on the boat was in a hammock among about 50 other people on the open deck, food was of course carne and rice every night. Mornings on the boat were amazingly peaceful watching the sun rise over the river. Seeing the factories of Manaus come into view after 4 (? I think) days was a huge change in scenery. We stayed in Manaus for about a week, it's a fascinating city. Like a combination of a huge city with a remote outpost. It is indeed relatively dangerous even for Brazil, we saw someone get mugged in broad daylight on a busy street. Have to watch where you go. The boat trips to the meeting of the waters (as in the video), but also going out in the evening to find baby crocodiles, fishing piranas, jungle treks. All classic tourist stuff but also very awesome in a place like that. Getting out of Manaus we had to fly because there's no road connections. Amazing part of the world!

quick tip: you're saying thank you correctly. However, you're using the "feminine" version (it's not official, but everybody knows it without no one saying it out loud hahaha) Obrigado (thank you used by men) and Obrigada (thank you used by women) great video!

I thought that too for a while, knowing some Brazilians in Melbourne, Aus, & having dated a Brazilian girl for a few weeks.. But then it clicked that it's just the slightly lazy Kiwi, New Zealand "O".. As a kiwi myself i can say that we pronounce our "Os" slightly slurred, so they can sound like an A. Listen to all his other vowels.. However, if he was a Maori NZer then his vowels would be very similar to local Portuguese Brazilian vowels, because Maori vowels are phonetic, & very similar to Japanese vowels, which are themselves similar to Portuguese vowels. My Brazilian friend said when she met Maori NZers in her travels, she could understand their English really easily, relative to all other English speakers she came across.. So he's saying Obrigado, he's just saying it with NZ English vowels & intonation..

Gramado and Canela for an overseas tourist would be a curiosity at best. I think he should visit Curitiba though, it is very different to other Brazilian capitals, probably the best large city in this country to showcase what other cities could've been like. Balneário Camboriú not as much, it's just full of rich people, it isn't a place grounded in reality like Curitiba is.

Only the bad, he never shows any of the actually good parts of Brazil. Don’t get me wrong, I love his work but as a Brazilian I can assure you 100% that my country is not limited to what he shows. There’s a lot of prosperous and safe cities in my country. By only watching his videos one would think Brazil as a whole is a 3rd world shithole and it’s not, it’s just a country with brutal socioeconomic inequalities.
@AlfaRomeoQ
@AlfaRomeoQ 3 года назад

I'm loving this Brazil series. I tried to cross into Venezuela at Pacaraima a couple years ago. We were told that tourists could cross over into the tourist area in Venezuela without a visa. The Venezualan border agents said they would let us go into Venezuela, but without official permission. Seemed too sketchy so we didn't do it. I look forward to seeing how it goes for you.
