On Monday September 24th, we were visited by 3/5ths of The Punch Brothers -- Chris Thile, along with Chris Eldridge (Martin 1939 D-28 Herringbone) and Noam Pickelny (Gibson 1941 RB-12 Top Tension Mastertone). Chris played our two Lloyd Loar 1924 F-5 mandolins and our 1925 Fern. Of our March 31, 1924 signed Loar, #75846, bearing Virzi Number (one of the lowest numbers seen although they seem to have been applied in no particular order) #10002, Chris said that it was one of the finest sounding "Virzi-equipped" Lloyd Loar F-5s he had ever heard. He said "this has an explosive low end that's awesome!" He added "You just don't hear F-5s with a Virzi that sound anything like this." He was also extremely impressed with our newest acquisition: the non-Virzi signed Loar dated February 18, 1924, bearing serial number #75318. Chris said: "This is one hell of a mandolin; it's a 'hoss.'" And he added "This February 18th Loar produces a sound that's right in between David Grisman's July 9, 1923 (the Bill Monroe date) and John Paul Jones (of Led Zeppelin)'s February 18th Loar. It is, he told us, "truly spectacular!" Chris owns the Lloyd Loar made two serial numbers before this one and added that he's come to the conclusion that for the finest possible sound of which a Lloyd Loar is capable you "can't depend on any other time period but February 1924 for the production of the signed Loar to be this transcendent in its response." This was made in the third and final year of the signed F-5. "Gibson had," he continued, "discovered how to build an optimum mandolin -- it never got better than this period." One could call it "the last great period" and the apogee -- the highest point - of Gibson's mandolin-making prowess. We realize that these mandolins are not inexpensive -- but if you are thinking along the lines of "I deserve to own the best mandolin that exists in the world -- and, frankly, who doesn't say that out loud to complete strangers every couple of days -- we'd like you to come to Mandolin Brothers (Sharon) and buy yourself a mandolin. . . . We made a 6 or 7 astonishing and wonderful video recordings of Chris T., and Chris E.and Noam P. playing these instruments. We hope you will view and hear them for yourself.

It’s a marvel of tone, speed, tone and execution on both their instruments. Chris is the best at his instrument look around and try to find someone with his ability. You can’t. It’s a honor to be living in a time where Christopher Thile is because a prodigy like him comes along so rarely. The GOAT

An instrument that retains the soul of a great maker, the souls of great musicians plainly presented, the souls of two very different, passionate composers, it makes my bloody head spin. I sometimes think that bearing witness to something that's both great and small like this is the best and highest purpose my life can have. Everything else is just paying bills. Thanks, Mando Bros (a great and soulful store in Staten Island, btw).

Few times I've seen a genius level of performance with an instrument. Perlman with Violin, Yo-yo ma with Cello. Thile has reached that "genius" level with mandolin.

Even though he is trying out the mandolin, the performance of the Bach (from BWV 1002) is remarkably fluid and exceptionally musical, and the tempo is what one expects on a modern violin, not a mandolin. The performance of Tennessee Waltz is exquisite, chamber music of the highest order.

Look at those high end frets. They're like eight inch to 16th in. down to 32nd of an inch apart, and it looked like he was actually fretting some of them. Very nice tune. Well done. No surprise.

G doesn't he use a hybrid combination of string gauges?
@Ratstick58
@Ratstick58 5 лет назад
+b gilley yes he uses the g from the 74 and the e and a from the 75. But this wasn't his loar he was just trying it out. To me he sounds a little quieter and smoother than on his custom set, but maybe he had them string it up with the hybrid set before hand? That's why I'm asking.
@bgilley8199
@bgilley8199 5 лет назад
G that makes sense. Yeah I doubt they strung it up special just for this video, though it's possible.

No problem-being thin-skinned on RU-vid comments is just asking for a rage-stroke! But yeah, I meant which of the three mandos from the vido description he was playing. :^) And it's a shameless plug for sure, but you'd probably like the mandolin player on my new record pretty well if you click my name then check out the links in the right column...

alas in the history of music virtuosi like Thile or Sierra Hull have no lasting impact unless they produce something that touches the soul rather than only the educated musical intellect. the less contacr with the dirt if not filth of human existence the less an artist has to express or communicate with the rest of us. Sorry, I'll take Monroe, Wakefield, Rector, Everett Lilly, Jethro, Bobby Osborne, over the virtuosi any day of the week. soo glad none of them were home-schooled so that their souls and hearts wouldn't be tainted by the wicked dirty world the rest of us grew up in
@flyshopbumtv7273
@flyshopbumtv7273 4 года назад
That can be your opinion, but I wouldn't really call myself educated, with musical intellect, but I would take thile and hull over any of the others any day of the week, and they touch me alot more. So you cannot say for hat they will not leave impact, because as far as I'm concerned, they have made an impact that will stand the test of time
