Mandolin Mondays #202: This week on Mandolin Mondays, the amazing Andy Leftwich, formerly from Ricky Skaggs and Kentucky Thunder, plays the heck out of this Texas-style fiddle tune on his 1999 Gilchrist mandolin.
Andy is a 4-time Grammy-winning multi-instrumentalist from Tennessee. Although primarily known for his fiddle playing, Andy has carved out a space for himself in the mandolin world as well. In addition to his 15-year tenure playing fiddle with Ricky Skaggs, Andy recorded two critically acclaimed albums on mandolin as a member of trio Three Ring Circle with dobro player Rob Ickes and bassist Dave Pomeroy. He's also recorded with such artists as Steven Curtis Chapman, Keith and Kristyn Getty, Dailey & Vincent, and many more.

Here's a word from Andy about the mandolin in this video, "This is probably the most balanced and most powerful Gilchrist I've ever played. It was built in 1999 and has a tone bar bracing as opposed to the X-bracing that Steve built a lot of in the early years. Basically I bought it straight from Ricky in Nov of 2017 who bought it straight from Steve in 1999 so we are the only two owners.. It was the same mandolin that he used on our recording of "Get Up John" off the "Live at Charleston Music Hall" that we did back in 2003. He used it frequently for nearly 17 years so it has a ton of pedigree! I've used it on several records since I've had for the past year and half and it records amazing! It has a flat fingerboard and V shape neck which plays into a fiddle players hands nicely :) I'm very honored to own it!"
