Mandolin Mondays #157: Moscow mandolin sensation Olga Egorova plays this Dutch made octave mandolin like no other! This week on Mandolin Mondays she brings us a set of Russian and Ukrainian tunes that will put you at the edge of your seat.
Olga is a professional Russian mandolinist who can be seen collaborating with many artists around the country. She performs regularly with guitarist Roman Palmov in the exciting acoustic and electric group, Duo Ro. Check out their most recent release here: www.duo-ro.com...
Here are a few words from Olga about this video, "There are three melodies in this medley: Russian traditional “I’m Sitting on a Pebble”, Ukrainian “Carol of the Bells” and once again Russian “In the Dark Forest” with some blues notes and classical cadenza. I'm sure you all know Carol of the Bells. Russian and Ukrainian folk cultures are similar, but have some differences in the harmonic system. In Russian music you can hear more pentatonic scale. And of course, you can add Blues steps to any melody.
I made this especially for "Mandolin Mondays" this December. Don’t worry no mandolins suffered while I was shooting this video. We have very dry air in Moscow flats, so the humidifier is on all the winter time:)
A few words about my mandolin: this octave mandolin (Mr. Green) was built for me by a Dutch luthier Thijs van der Harst. You can see another his instruments on his website: www.thijsvander... Mr. Green's double strings are tuned in octaves, except for the first E-E--they are tuned in unison and sound like the first guitar string."
Be sure to connect with Olga at the following links below for more information about her music and performance schedule:

And as always, tune in next week for more Mandolin Mondays! Until then...
Happy Picking!
David

Wonderful to finally see Olga performing on MM. I've been watching her grow for years now, and consider her to be the female version of Chris Thile. Incredible playing on the mandolin, mandola, and now the octave. What a talent.
@Gelsenbury
@Gelsenbury 5 лет назад
I know you meant this as a compliment, but Olga Egorova is more than a female Thile. Personally, I think she's even better. I love the passion she adds to the virtuosity, and the way she makes herself sound like about 3 players.
@quigley4440

@@Gelsenbury Can't argue with you. They are both very special talents, but Olga might have the edge here. She is certainly better looking than Chris.

I highly recommend her recent videos, which showcase some of her own compositions with orchestral backing and her amazing guitarist partner in Duo RO.

Remarkable musicianship! The fog machine was an interesting touch. Was this using standard tuning? It sounded like some courses were tuned in octaves.

@c.a.t.732 4 года назад
Absolutely stunning performance, especially with the fog machine blowing in her face like that... next time, made add a laser light show also?! One question, though... with the octave stringing on the courses, wouldn't that technically be a "Celtic bouzouki" rather than an octave mandolin?
@gokuuzumaki70
@gokuuzumaki70 3 года назад
Celtic bouzouki standard tuning is G D A D.
@c.a.t.732
@c.a.t.732 3 года назад
@@gokuuzumaki70 Sometimes octave mandolins are tuned that way as well (GDAD) and Celtic bouzoukis are sometimes tuned GDAE. I was referring to the octave stringing on the lower courses... GgDd (and in this case Aa as well) which is more typical of bouzoukis.
