Sheet music and TAB for this tune: mandolinstudies...
In this video it´s me, Magnus Zetterlund, performing a Scandinavian traditional dance tune on mandolin. This is an old and typical polska(slängpolska) from Södermanland in Sweden that dates back to the 18th century. I play a Phoenix Neo Bluegrass mandolin. This is a series of videos that I see as a introduction to Nordic folk music played on mandolin.

Beautiful music, Magnus. And you really make your Phoenix mandolin sing. The music sounds modal though I'm not expert to identify the specific one.

Fantastic piece - it seems so me it could make sense to really visualise this as a 12 beat cycle - so like 3 times 4 (equals 12). so u have strong beats on beats 1, 4 and 7 and the 10th beat is also there but with less energy to it i guess? thats how i heard it at least, i really gotta check out this one, thanks for playing it!

I am so excited to wake up and see the notification for a new Nordic folk tune. Your timing for releasing new videos is perfect because there’s time to work on the one prior, while seeing the thread that connects them with the next tune. Thanks Magnus!

Thanks! Yes, I try to be consistent and drop them one by one. Glad to hear the interval suits you! :-) Do you find both performance and turorial helpful when learning the tune?

It's great to have both the performances and the tutorials. But for an intermediate mandolin player it would be great, if you would release a tutorial how to embellish the melody in Scandinavian folk. What are typical practices to make the melody sound more nordic and were to put them. Would be great if you would do this following one of your performance to show how you build up from the pure melody to your performance arrangement. These melodies depend so much on the embellishments to sound great and my fingers always want to use typical Irish things like roles which somehow just don't fit as well. It would also be great, if you could talk about, how to bring the violin bowing feel into the mandolin. The sluring / accent fluctuation is something which gives the tune a nice groove which fits. Do you have tips how to put that into your mandolin playing? thanks in advance!

Yes, I want to go in to these kind of things also in my video lessons. First thing is still to know the melodies well, that´s why I focus on that for the moment. It´s a good subject for a live lesson to go more in to arrangement and accompanyment. Over time I will cover it all! That´s my plan. :-)

Love this why does this Nordic folk song sound middle eastern? Or is this your interpretation?

It sounds very Swedish. But I think old European music can sound little Middle Eastern because in the past Europe used similar scales and melodies that now are used in Arabic music.
