This is THE BAND that started that distinctively New York sound: hard-edge Funk-Rock-Latin-Jazz-World music fusion! No one else like them. They perform all their own original material. Others have copied from and sampled them numerous times. Rock-Funk originals and make great music while delivering a message. Always with positive vibrations, love and energy.
I saw Mandrill,👀👀👀 👀 👀👀👀👀 , Live and in person, HERE IN HAWAI'I,1971, w/EL CHICANO featuring Ursi Arvizu "Sabor Ami" 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽💚💙❤🧡🤎💛💜🤍🖤💫💫💫🤙🏼👌💪🏼💃🏼💃🏼💃🏼🫂🫂🫂🍃🌱🌿
Excuse my ignorance when it comes to "New York Sound". I have always thought that EDDIE PALMIERI and his "HARLEM RIVER DRIVE" band around 1971 formed this sound, as I said excuse me for my ignorance but this is a genuine question. Hmm, come to think of it, MANDRILL was way before 1971...sorry!
I first started listening to Mandrill back in the early 70's while I was in the military serving overseas. I still have my collection of Mandrill record albums that I bought back them. One of my top 3 favorite bands of all time !!!
Yes I agree. They're an underrated band that didn't get much recognition back in the day of performing... Although some of their music got played on the radio but not that often........
I remember this oh oh so well. High school years caught them in concert down at the Philadelphia Spectrum rotating stage up close never forget...real music them and WAR
This is my first time hearing this multi-talented band. I'm a very big Mint Condition fan, so you already know that I'm a big supporter of LIVE INSTRUMENTATION! This truly inspires me to learn at least 5 instruments. To bad my Generation will never see this because they so stuck on today's Mainstream music, which sucks.
Charles Padro holds it down on that drum solo like a BOSS. And I love the way his drums each have their own musical “note,” even though they weren’t tuned to a specific pitch. Those old shells just sound different!
The most powerful band I ever seen I meet them a few times a their concert I seen first at the Apollo theatre, Central park, and their last performance at BB king in N.Y. Got a chance to talk to Lou Wilson RIP I called him sweet Lou and he told me he hasn't been call sweet Lou in a long time I got a chance to meet their mother after a show and also sang some MANDRILL songs with Carlos in their dressing room after their performance My number band of all-time
Wow, I remember this show back in the day called "Soul to Soul"...It came on channel 13 here in New York City...... This is definitely a classic.......
Actually, the show was called "Soul!" on the pre-PBS Channel 13, produced and often hosted by Ellis Haizlip, a prerequisite to "Soul Train", in which a number of now famous talent, like Earth, Wind & Fire, Ashford & Simpson, Labelle, New Birth, Jimmy Castor and Black Ivory as well as several poets and Black leaders, got their first television exposure. "Soul to Soul" was the name of the movie released around this same time which featured Roberta Flack, Les McCann, The Staple Singers, Ike & Tina Turner, Wilson Pickett and the Voices of East Harlem doing a live concert in Ghana. It has since be released on CD and DVD with Santana instead of Roberta Flack.
I remeber being in the audience at one of the B-A-D-D-E-S-T- MANDRILL concerts of all time @ Lincoln Center's Philharmonic Hall with the New York Symphony Orchestra. Mandrill entered from the back of the auditorium on this piece. WOW! One of the top 5 concerts of my LIFE!!! Love Mandrill to this day and forever!
One of the first concerts I got to go to as a teenager with my homies at the SPECTRUM in Philly. Got right up front of the stage. I was mesmerized by the music then and I still am today. That's true African music. Young brother's today ain't stepping up to the plate like that no more. The drums beats are still calling out to us.
I just came across this video while looking at a performance by EARTH WIND AND FIRE. I was only 3 years old in 1971, so I don't remember this tv show. Mandrill was great. My father had one of their albums. Do you still live in Philly? I was born here and still live here. Thanks Ken
Yes they are still calling. We need to [re]learn the message of the drums. Ah, them horns! Oh that rhythm! I love Mandrill, loved them THEN, love them now. Thank you for sharing!!!
I am OG ... MO G... THIS IS HOW WE USED TO DO IT... BACK IN THE DAY... THIS IS ONE OF THE GROUPS WE USED TO PORTRAY AND DISPLAY WITH OUR MUSICAL PRESENTATION... GOD BLESS YOU ALL AND YOUR LOVED ONES AND GRACE AND PEACE BE WITH YOU ALL... YOUNG PEOPLE SAVOR THIS PRESENTATION OF... 'MUSIC'!!!
Evidently, bein' able to play three or more instruments was a pre-requisite for bein' a member of this group!! These brothers still perform, and they still sound great!!!!
Wow, My Dad used to talk about this band and I had no idea who they were. He was from NY. This is a bad ass find. I had never seen them until now. I only knew of the name my dad mentioned 25 years ago. He had them on an old 8 track tape that got destroyed but he could never find a replacement. I tried to find a copy one year, i think in 1995 , of their work for a birthday gift, but to no avail. He was in the Viet Nam war and he said he played their stuff a lot and wanted to recapture a segment of his youth and his brothers in arms, by listening to them again to bring back fond memories. He was just 20 years old in 1971. R.I.P pops, RU-vid is great. Wow thanks for the upload
man do i miss real live music on television. thank you neftali santiago for enlightening this generation to what was a pure joy for us then and still lives with us today. peace, rich
Brooklyn's own---MANDRILL! These guys inspired a lot of artists today. Its amazing that they are still around and doing what they do best. Caught a show in Prospect Park a few years back......awesome!
Yes I just recently saw a footage of a concert they did back in 2006 on "RU-vid" and it was a good video..... Amazing that they're still performing... They grew up in Brownsville, Brooklyn as well as Brass Construction....
The soundtrack of my teen years, while learning to play guitar, involved listening to my Brooklyn homies. Omar Mesa was on point. Neftali was a funky ass drummer, Coffee Cave was brilliant on keys, and the Wilson bros....what can i say?!! R.I.P. Dr. Lou Wilson and much thanks & love for the treasure trove of outstanding music you've left for us to explore.
Wow these cats can blow!!! There is no comparing musicians from this era with today. The freedom to experiment with music is long gone from the commercial music industry.
i was in high school when i first heard mandrill now im 54 yrs old and have 9 grandchildren and i still feel the love and passion that emanates from this brothers soul still after all this years !! tnx neftali for keping the fire alive after all this years thru this great videos...
I still get chills hearing this amazing orchestration. They do NOT do music like this today. Mandrill is and has been one of, if not my absolute favourite artists since the 70s. They have no song I dislike.
Buenas tardes , fíjate que ando buscando una canción de ellos , solo me acuerdo que empezaba con una frase Aico bi a e y contestaban e bi a e No sé si la conozcas y me informes , gracias Peace
These guys are great. I was all set to see them play at my high school, Brooklyn Tech, in 1972. The folks had a one word answer for that..."No". I was only 13.
PURE......RAW.......UNADULTERATED FUNK! Neftali, YOU GUYS were WAY ahead of your time. I'm in my mid 50's Brother, and I grew up listening to Mandrill. Your "Theme" describes the energy, the force in which you guys played. The tight., expert musicianship; you guys paved the way for groups like Cameo, SOS Band, Mass Production, Brick, Dazz Band, etc, 10 years later. As good as those bands were, they didn't come close to the power with which MANDRILL performed!
DAMN RIGHT! Quiet as kept, as big a Fishbone fan as I am I just couldn't help but notice how much of you guys I hear in their overall sound. It's positively mindblowing! Yeah, Mandrill seriously needs R&R Hall of Fame recognition strictly from an influential standpoint. Would be a major crime if they don't... >;-(
These cats were special back in the day & are still very special in this current era of music. We need more artist with this flare & raw talent. We could most likely find cats in their late 50's playing somwhere in central park n.y. or somewhere in oakland cali. jammin like this. My uncle & his boys would jam like this in his basement & i was @ the tender age of 4 & i'm still hooked. I love my uncle for schooling me as a youth. Peace too my old school head jazz/funk uncle!!!!!
I still have their Albums!! Memories of going to “Soul” TV live with Ellis Hayslip as the host…I once went with my friends The Delfonics and met Anna Marie Horseford, and young Arseno Hall at Soul.
I remember them from when I was a kid, even though they didn't have any hits. Happened to pick up a "best of" CD of theirs back about 10 years ago and really liked what I heard. I have an oldies show that plays a lot of not-big-hits along with hits, and have played "Fencewalk" before, as well as "Hang Loose." Love seeing and hearing this video!
Mind blowing music I listened to in the 70's when we smoked a lot of pot that just expanded the experience even further! you just had to be there! This group was just awesome and musically talented!
Mandrill, I am a fan forever, I only caught one show in my lifetime, but I play at least one Mandrill recording a day. I can't say that for any other group, even my own band ! Though the music of Mandrill I have learn to LOVE ONE ANOTHER
.. tengo 55 años , y tengo como más de 40 años de escucharlos, q ritmo chévere , Soi Del Atlántico (Sabanalarga) Colombia, un tema Classico es " Poli Strick Carnivalis" 👍
Yes I knew I would be the drummer in my heart after hearing the first and second album. My mom let me put on those albums and practice the songs till they where apart of me.
Great upload! I had never seen this performance. I was only 2 years old at the time, but these guys are huge inspirations to me as a musician. Thanks again and much respect!.
Wow! Thanks for posting this video. I remember buying the LP when it came out and have been wanting to hear this again. Mandrill, I believe, did a few LPs; all with great music.
Mandrill is one of the coolest and most underrated bands ever!! These guys throw down the real funk!! This video is priceless and will live forever! Thanks for posting this soulful piece of music history!!!!
I love Mandrill!! It doesn't get any better than this. Wow. Thank you Neftali for posting this. Wow. Unbelievable. You guys are the best. My favorite band. I finally have found, after all these years, the music that I truly love. Thank you Mandrill.
People in the Music Industry knew How Good MANDRILL was....they were ahead of their Time.... I don't think the Music Industry knew How to present them to the Public because they Played All Genre of Music... Truly an UNSUNG Group.....should be in the Rock and Roll HOF...
This has to be Willie Williams, Sax Player of and for All times and Music Genres! Agree Willie!! They should be in the Rock n Roll HOF!! Who do we have to speak to make this happen?
No they should NOT be in the RRHOF because it's an absolute sham and should be known more for the numerous great bands like Mandrill that are excluded/never even considered !!!###
that's funny ' they didn't know how to market Mandril " well they knew how to market the ' pet rock ' and Santana , War . Here's a clue radio was their first concern , so if you didnt have short repetitive riffs , it didn't matter how good a band could Jam and shorter the song the more MONEY w/ commercials they made , plus records co. control the trends.
Yes! Finally some early clip from my favorite (along with the Meters) funk act, I'm a "Funkateer" and have spent nearly 35 years listening to the rhythm (funkl) and I love GEORGE, SLY, JAMES and all other legends that funk gave us. But Mandrill are something special for me, this group blends world music into the most important thing namely the "on the one" and got some unbelievable way of just changing the tempo and styles!
An amazingly talented and versatile band. An inspiration to many of the funk bands that followed. Underrated and unsung except by those who follow their music.
"Back in the day" as a progressive rock, all night DJ in Florida I often put Mandrill on the turntable. Something made me think of them today, so I enjoyed revisiting their funk.
I remember seeing them in Providence, RI @ the Arena. They had a different bass player and they opened up for Ike and Tina Turner Revue. All of this talent for $4.50 at the door. Been a fan ever since. Mandrill-land LP was their best. Peace.
@Mentagasm, It's nice to see our fans answer your question. Glad you like the music. I don't post the name of the shows because of weird laws but the bottom line is it is my history channel of my life you dig. Cool, Stay Up!
