At 55 he can recognize the wisdom he failed to grasp at 35... the futility of trying to do unto others as they did to you in the hope that it will make things right. Some might consider him a pompous ass for exhorting us to pay attention to that wisdom, but considering that most people won’t ever realize that wisdom on their own, think how grateful those that listen will be. Some people think their smarts comes from their DNA-it doesn’t. We’re all born naked and knowing nothing. As the song from Stephen Sondheim’s “Into The Woods” goes, “you must be carefully taught.”

Difficult to imagine after viewing interviews with Patinkin that he has a reputation of being very difficult to work with, he seems to be an awesome guy in interviews.

“I have been in the revenge business so long, now that it is over I do not know what to do with the rest of my life.”. This was always my favorite line. Made me cry because that was the only true tragedy in the movie.

Uganda, insted of detention camps (or giving them a low income as in Europe if they get in) is giving them land in the North less populated area, and apply for jobs in the rest of the country. So far, the economy, being a non-zero sum game, is improving e.g. in the North of Uganda.

Yeah they are very welcoming in Uganda, except if you happen to be gay. But life is complicated and I guess doing good and doing bad aren't mutually exclusive.
@adamvaz9097
@adamvaz9097 6 лет назад
andrineslife remind me again when the U.S legalized gay marriage? It also doesn't help that Western countries and Europe fucked the continent of Africa for so long.
@andrineslife
@andrineslife 6 лет назад
adam vaz I think there is a difference between life in prison (formerly death penalty) and marriage, but I agree that a lot of what is happening around the world is "the west's" fault. Uganda's gay rights issues specifically seem to come from American preachers. No country's human rights records are flawless, but Uganda has been kind of a poster child for how not to treat lgbt people.
@adamvaz9097
@adamvaz9097 6 лет назад
I don't disagree that their treatment of gays are unacceptable. That being said, the country has a lot of problems to deal with, the fact that the country is pretty screwed means that no matter how much we say "treat gays better" they wont do anything about it. The treatment of gays is unfortunately one of a long list of problems.
@deveousdevil
@deveousdevil 6 лет назад
Uganda's anti gay law is reprehensible, but you should know that American Evangelicals are the one who spent years traveling and lobbying the government to pass those laws. there was a documentary (or series) about it, forgot the name. but unsurprisingly, our religious nuts are losing the culture wars in the US so they are out trying to ruin the rest of the world.

I don't know, man. Uganda might be loving and welcoming, but their government has outlawed homosexuality.
@davidmartin6804
@davidmartin6804 6 лет назад
Quite a few Commonwealth countries have laws criminalising homosexuality. It's legal policy from British colonial times, and continues decades after independence (despite changes in the UK since then).
@TF_Tony
@TF_Tony 6 лет назад
The mindset is a relic of Christian colonialism, yes, the policies aren't, some of them are as recent as three years ago.
@davidmartin6804
@davidmartin6804 6 лет назад
Then I challenge you to provide an example of a country that has introduced legislation outlawing homosexuality, where none existed before. In 2014, Uganda notoriously considered a bill to make homosexuality punishable by death. The existing maximum sentence had been 14 years in prison. This was a private member's bill, and US evangelists were behind it - wanting to hang gays, but (I assume) with love in their hearts and a smile on their face, as they enforce God's holy word. They had a choice - exile (Leviticus 18:29 "Everyone who does any of these detestable things - such persons must be cut off from their people") or execution (Leviticus 20:13 "If a man has sexual relations with a man as one does with a woman, both of them have done what is detestable. They are to be put to death"). The loving Christians chose death, but the Ugandan legislators decided life imprisonment was a more suitable punishment. The bill did not pass into law because of procedural irregularities, and (more likely) international outcry.

Cool, I didn't know Mandy Patinkin was doing all this stuff nowadays. I thought he'd gone blind in the '90s. I see on Wikipedia he got successful corneal transplants. as someone who speaks multiple languages... I can tell you from my personal experience, that if I want to communicate with someone and I know their language, it gives me an incredible advantage over others who need a translator. If you sound like a certain group of people, they see you as one of them. Languages are an incredibly effective way to get taken seriously and be heard... Like if I wrote this answer in my native Italian you probably wouldn't have bothered translating it and reading it, but because it's in English you did :)
@intimi28
@intimi28 6 лет назад
As Isabella Modanese already said, speaking multiple languages gives you multiple advantages. I'm from the Netherlands and I speak 7 languages, although not all of them fluently. However when people hear you trying to address them in their native tongue they really appreciate it and they immediately like you more than someone who doesn't even try. The effort you put into it is a sign of respect and leads to getting respect in return. Furthermore I love reading, but translations are sometimes not all that, due to words that just have no good alternative in other languages, sentence structures or grammar differences, jokes that are a wordplay, and mystery clues that work in one language but not in another. So it's really great that I'm able to read and enjoy those books in their original German or English edition instead of the shoddy Dutch translation.
