I played this for my autistic daughter when she was a little girl, it was a song that came out when I was just 3 or 4 I think (born in ‘62) and I remembered loving it as a kid. Anyway, my daughter loved it and we used to dance around the living room singing the doo wah diddy parts and it really helped her to start interacting more and use language more. She’s almost 37 now and we both still smile at each other and start singing the chorus if we ever hear that song.
So happy. The magic of song. I worked with mhmr ladies and one would sing looking out my back door by c.c.r. with me when she was up at night and couldn't sleep.
This would have been shot on at least 16 mm and more likely 35mm sound film. It was very expensive to do at the time and is one reason you don't see much video from back in the day.
I think what happened was just "the era". Just look at The Beatles: in the early '60s they were doing songs like "I Want To Hold Your Hand" and by the late '60s they were doing songs like "Come Together" and "Helter Skelter".
This was his original band. The Earth Band has been around since 1970. In between he had Manfred Mann Chapter Three which basically invented Acid Jazz. The original band put out great pop singles but their LPs were pure blues/jazz.
"Do Wah Diddy Diddy" made an appearance in the Bill Murray movie "Stripes" as the platoon is marching across the military base, with Bill leading the vocals, and the platoon forming the chorus. Most definitely worth a watch. Also, MM (these guys were around a lot earlier than Eminem) does a great cover of Bob Dylan's "Quinn The Eskimo", aka "The Mighty Quinn".
Paul Jones is the lead singer here. He's still going strong and performed this song and "Pretty Flamingo" on Jools' Annual Hootenanny, which is an institution every New Year's Eve here in the UK. He still tours with "The Manfreds" which includes early members Mike D'Abo and Tom McGuiness but not Manfred Mann. The group (not including the Earth Band iteration) had 13 Top Ten hits in the U.K. singles charts between 1964 and 1969, including two Number 1 hits (Pretty Flamingo and The Mighty Quinn). Their discography also includes three Bob Dylan covers, "If You Gotta Go, Go Now", "The Mighty Quinn" and "Just Like A Woman". Although "Doo Wah Diddy Diddy" was a number 1 hit in the U.S. for some unknown reason they failed to make much of an impression on the U.S. charts thereafter.
Nice reaction to Manfred Mann's "Doo Wah Diddy". Funny story, me and my two sisters, aged, 9,10 + 11, asked for this 45 (single) for Christmas. My father, a Benny Goodman, Glenn Miller fan and hated the Beatles and Rock + Roll. Anyway Xmas comes and we open a present that's a record, unfortunately it's by Roger Miller and called "Doo Wacka Doo". At least Pop tried and gave us $1.00 so we bought the single next time @ Mall. Doo Wacka Doo was Doo Doo to us. LOL
As already said, Paul Jones, (in this video) was the vocalist from '62-'66, and then Mike d'Abo did the vocals from '66-'69. Manfred Mann was the keyboardist of the band with the same name. Manfred Mann then reformed the group with Manfred Mann's Earth Band in '71. They did a song called 'The Mighty Quinn' in the Mike d'Abo era that's really cool. Trivia- Mike's daughter was in the tv show, 'The Wonder Years', as Kevin's sister.
I was only 4 when this came out. My oldest brother got me hooked on this great group by Manfred Mann which is the one playing the keyboard I believe. My oldest brother would know exactly but I cannot ask him only because he passed quite a few years ago. Manfred still performs to this day at the age of 83. Just a great song from a great group.
There's something about the 60s that took simplicity to a new artform. Simply to the point lyrics, fun, music, you can't help but sing the Do Wah Diddy Diddy part.
This was the sixties Manfred Mann band and sound. In 1970s he had Manfred Manns Earth Band. I saw him in with the Earth Band 1976 at Rivera Theatre in Chicago. They did play some of these older tunes mixed in with the newer stuff.
They had a number of great hits such as Pretty Flamingo, Mighty Quinn,, My Name is Jack and Ha Ha Said the Clown amongst others. As you have read they spun-off into The Manfred Mann Earth Band. Manfred Mann was on the keyboard with glasses on.
This is the original 60s version of the Band. "Blinded by the light" was in the mid 70s. All of the songs in those days were under 3 minutes long, as AM radio wouldn't play anything over 3 minutes.
the inimitable manfred on the keyboard - check out that skinny beatnik beard - kind of reminds me of bob denver - maynard g krebs - with extended sideburns . dobie gillis anyone ? !
The 60s were a happy bouncy decade, the 70s were more serious and maybe a tad more sophisticated. Manfred Man is the bearded guy playing keyboards. He'd met the Beatles in Hamburg, and joined their gang. He followed them back to England and they helped him in the music business. The two lead singers were Paul Jones and Mike D'arbo. The one followed the other. Other hits included 54321 Fox on the run Pretty Flamingo Dylan's - Mighty Quinn. ( a cover) Sha la la - which was their follow up to do wa Diddy. A great little group who had a quiet spell before they reconfigured as the earth band. I was very fond of them when I was 10!
Joybringer is an amazing song. Manfred Mann wrote the lyrics and the music is the piece by Gustav Holst , Jupiter the Bringer of Jollity. It really is a "joy " to listen to!
Manfred Mann was a great British rock band from the 60's. They had some great songs including "Pretty Flamingo", "Mighty Quinn", "5-4-3-2-1", "Sha La La" etc. Manfred Mann's Earth Band is an English rock band formed by South African musician Manfred Mann later in 1971. Their hits include covers of Bruce Springsteen's "For You", "Spirit In The Night" & "Blinded By The Light" which was a big hit for them in 1976.
What a fun reaction! 😀 Another group with a fun, high energy song is the Easybeats. The song “Friday on my mind.” Especially the live one from Beat Club! 😀⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I can't help it that every single time I hear this song I think of the show "Moonlighting" episode where David (Bruce Willis) tells Maddy (Cybill Shepard) on their "case" that she needs to "mess up her hair hike up her skirt and "walk sexy" when they are in an alley "on the way to a bar", so Maddy can "flirt with one of the guys" to get him to give her some evidence' and as Maddy messes up her hair, hikes up her skirt etc.etc..and walks down the ally, as David watches her walk away he sings "There she was just a walking down the street singing do wha diddy diddy dum diddy do,, she looks good, she looks fine, she looks good she looks fine, then I nearly lost my mind" and as David sings this, Maddy turns around and gives him "that look" that she always gave him" when she loses her patience with him. Classic episode..you can see it on youtube I believe. For those that don't know Bruce Willis was a great rock and jazz singer, he even sang at a lot of clubs with his back up groups".
That's all Origional !! MANFRED Is the Keyboard Player it had obout 3 different conception? Manfred Man, The Manfreds , & Manfred mans Earth Band !! With slight changes in Musician's & a Change in Lead Singer !!
Manfred Mann were at their best in this early incarnation, Paul Jones had a great voice as lead vocalist, but there was always conflict in the band, Jones left and Mike D'Abo replaced him, they continued to be successful, with a more "whimsical" style replacing the Rand B sound, but by the end of the sixties their best years were behind them.
The original line up featuring Paul Jones on vocals were a great band with many hits, later Mike Dabo replaced Paul & the hits kept coming,Chapter Three & The Earth Band followed,Manfred kept reinventing the band!
Regarding the clarity of the image, it probably depends on whether this was shot on film or video tape. They probably shot the original on film and so it is a much clearer image.
In those day it was usually film as the early video recorders were real to real, large and needed a high tape speed so simpler to record using a broadcast film camera.
Manfred Mann, the song is pretty flamingo don’t really care for Rod Stewart’s cover version but Rod Stewart‘s cover version of the first cut is the deepest. It’s excellent.
