The Island of Mango in the 'Otumu'omu'a Group of the Ha'apai District. Devastating moment on the evening of the 15th January 2022, when a tsunami generated by the Hunga volcano eruption coupled with an acoustic wave from a blast in the atmosphere. The resultant wave was up to 12m high as described by the Town Officer it drove inland up to 500m. No building withstood the waves, washing the entire village against the interior walls of trees and high elevation.
The residents escaped to a 30m elevation within 600m of the shoreline and was safe after the tsunami but was caught in the ashfall which lasted over 10 hours after the tsunami after 6pm.
