Because of the recent cold weather, we've gotten a lot of questions about Mango Trees and cold weather. There is not a simple answer to what temperature will damage or destroy a mango tree, but Chris has lots of helpful hints.
In this video, Chris discusses
-what temperatures will damage flowers and young fruit
-what temperatures will kill mango trees
-how to prepare your mango trees for winter cold
-how to protect your mango trees from freezing temperatures
For more information about the farm and the fruit that we grow, check out www.themangopl...

I'm in Las Vegas and have mangoes trucking through their first winter here. One of them hasn't gotten any damage at all at 29F (ice cream) and the other two (alphonso & manila) have sustained a little outer leaf damage. I'm hoping by them pulling thru this mild winter that they'll be prepared for an almost certainly more severe winter next winter.

Excellent info and presentation. Thank you! Looks like I'll be taking my mango trees (1 yr old in pots) into the house this year for our 2-week Arizona winters. Although it's short it can get down to 32 and sometimes 27 for a couple days. This winter I didn't take them in they survived kept under our bushy tree that sits against the house wall prob kept them warm enough. But after seeing your video I'm not taking any chances this year and will bring them inside for the 2 week winter.

Interesting here in southeast Texas we get some frosts time to time and varies on season. I’ve seen a winter where there was no winter here. We have banana trees and they sometime produce, they’re producing now. The only thing I can say is mulch the hell out the ground. Cold/freezing wind is hard to block off. The dog is convinced he found something! I'm growing them in the SanFran bay area and its all strictly blooms in spring...they never bloom in winter here. Slow growers..more for fun. Because it's at least a ten year wait to get a good crop out of one tree . Why I tell people- plant 3,4,5,. BTW,Not that it takes 10 years for them to fruit..they can do that the first year you plant them. But..amounts that fill a bowl is quite a wait.

@@somerandomguy7458 A little. You need frost free and 80f summers. Pittsburgh.Fremont seem to be the best. Hayward works...but slower growing. Plus.they never come close in size to the tropics. My largest is about 12' in 8 years. Its going to take 20 to be like a real tree. Long wait.

I guess it's better to transplant my Fruit Punch after the next "last frost" and risk the heat rather than the frost. Mine is in a container right now and I want to grow it out a bit before risking transplant so I guess I'll be growing it out over the next year and transplanting it then. We had 3 days in a row at 26-29f but a typical frost in my area is around 33-36f. I'll run XMas lights on my mango come winter :)

On the story of the mango trees that eventually died from frost. Did they ever produce fruit again before they all died? We just had a tough week in SW Florida. Temps were down to the upper twenties three times in one week. I know our mango season is done for this season but was wondering if they will ever bloom again. My yard reminds me of the Agent Orange (defoliant) they dropped in Vietnam that killed all the jungle growth. Thanks for your videos.

So where exactly does cold impact? Is it the roots that get damaged, or it is the trunk that gets hit by cold. I'm trying to figure out a solution - like planting Mango trees next to a heated pond and spray the warm water during cold spells.

Great video, as usual Chris...I had heard/believed ~40 degrees initial possible damage on flowering...and 27-25 on severe damage or death to mature mango trees..below freezing on very young mango trees...shouldn't we be removing all flowering this early in Winter ?
@TrulyTropical
@TrulyTropical 6 лет назад
Here in FL we never know how the winter will play out. This past cold spell might have been the worst of the season. So for us, removing the flowers or not might indicate how optimistic or pessimistic the person is. I tend to leave them on. Just a small portion of the trees have flowers and/or small fruit... and represent the hope for a few early mangos. If I were a large-scale grower, I would remove the early bloom so that everything could be picked about the same time.

I live in a Mediterranean country, and tropical fruits like banana and avocado are grown here and with a very good taste. Do you think we can grow a mango tree here and which varieties do you advice? Lowest temperature in a year is 44 degrees but the climate is dry and hot in summer. We have no water issues. But my only concern is dryness in summer and frost at winter.
@TrulyTropical

Generally mangos grow well where avocados and bananas are grown. It seems that you would be able to grow many mango varieties. What varieties you grow would depend on which ones you like and which varieties are available. Good Luck!

isn't wet soil during cold snap a recipe for root rot with evergreen/tropical trees? What is a reason to water mango before cold snap when they significantly drop their transpiration rate? There is more benefit from mulching heavily around root zone and keeping it moist than letting them sit in wet soil during cold weather.
@TrulyTropical
@TrulyTropical 6 лет назад
We happen to have excellent drainage, but established mango trees can sit in water for 2 weeks ...apparently without consequence. Of coursed for avocados, standing water can be lethal.
@greenblood3708
@greenblood3708 6 лет назад
I've seen quite a few dead mangos from root rot growing here in SoCal in ground (clay soil) or pots after days of rain with temps in 40s to upper 30s. (Alphonso seems to be most susceptible while VPride is most tolerant of cold wet soil). Even though soil drains it retains some moisture. It may be not an issue with sand since it retains little water but I still dont see how moist soil can help tree deal with cold weather when tree needs least water. What I found effective is a foot of moist leaf mulch around root area - it keeps soil temp above 50 even with frost on the ground. Mango can sit 2 weeks in water in sub 50 temps? Bananas and coconuts can sit in water for months as long as temps are above 60. Drop it to 40 and they turn into mulch in matter of days.
@nandap2650
@nandap2650 10 месяцев назад
Besides, doesn't the water make the ground colder? It seems that if it is wet it would be colder and not resist.

We didn't have a frost in the forecast, went out of town and even though we had watered well before we left, we came home to mango trees with all of the leaves brown and dried out. Some of the branches still have a little green on them, others are all brown. They are pretty young trees. We don't know how cold it got or for how long. Is there a chance that the trees are still alive?

Temperatures below 40°F are said to damage flowers, below freezing will damage trees. My Nam Doc Mai has been fine down to about 39°F this winter, and it looks like it is about to pop with blooms. It's a Thai variety and might prefer a summer rainy season with dry mild winters like we get in Florida. Winter chill in the 40s° induces heavy flowering. It is not a thirsty tree.

Mangos are a common sight in Orlando today. Just a few years ago Orlando was too cold for mangos in winter, but climate change is changing this rapidly. Even the USDA has revised their hardiness zone map. A damaging frost is still likely every few years, but I see mangos in fruit here most years.

@@fed9186 I don't think NAFTA has any influence on the survivability or productivity of mango trees in Florida. As a home gardener, I am concerned only with growing the best quality fruit possible in my area. I am not in competition with growers of mangos from Mexico, or even from South Florida. To thrive in the NAFTA-dominated market, Florida growers need to concentrate on high quality fruit. We cannot complete on price alone.

@@gordonspears6320 it is more expensive to grow in us vs Mexico etc.. Plus farm land is worth more converted to condos etc. But yes high quality is key.
