Malaysian National University (UKM) Deputy Vice Chancellor for Research and Innovations, Professor Datuk Dr Wan Kamal Mujani said Malaysia has lost 50% of its mangrove forest since 1957.
Now there are only 620,000 hectares left as the natural shield for the coast line.
Apart from the environmental problems, the decline in the mangrove forests has also deeply impacted the Orang Seletar indigenous community. They live on the shores and riverines along the Johor Straits.
