One of the things I liked about manhunt is that you're not a criminal trying to set a goal, but instead you're being forced to fight deranged serial killers who never interact with society, every gang is out to get you and the brutal takedowns is just cherry on top
I personally think the premise of manhunt is probably the scariest in gaming. There are no bioterror or psychological monsters after the player just screwed up human beings hunting you. I don't think we'll ever get a game like this again.
Condemned criminal origins comes close, but fumbles near the end bringing super natural crap into it, but for the most part it's just crackheads and the homeless that are attacking you, good point in being the scariest premise though - I agree
Sadly no, I'd hope for another game like this in the future, where human beings stripped of any sense of morality wanting to wear you like a suit after they finish putting your soul in a meat grinder and eating it with some bread.
If i remember correctly, on the level where you have to show the dead body of the guy wearing the skirt just before entering the abandoned prison, if you just show up with his head, then Cash will hold it up for the camera and instead Starkweather will say that for bringing his head, you'll get a special gift or treat. Then when you enter the prison, you can find a shotgun in one of the cells. Something to try on a replay if you want.
@@blakebortles6098I don’t remember it working on 360. What I do remember about the 360 version is that Starkweather’s dialogue was bugged and the game thought you always had a headset plugged in meaning you couldn’t hear him, 360 backwards compatibility was a mess.
I miss when rockstar gave us stuff like this, unique concepts with actual thought put into it. when you mentioned the video game manual I went... "that really was neat" we don't even get those anymore. Controversial yet captivating game Manhunt was.
@@elJossu and graphics too. I really like going back to these early 2000's games because of how while they have old graphics, the gameplay is just too fun.
I agree. Rockstar and most AAA gaming companies don't make games like Manhunt now. Heck, Rockstar also published State of Emergency on PS2 and Xbox. They'd never make that today.
One of my favorite aspects of Manhunt as I played through it for the first time a few months ago, was the change in tone and feeling after the first few levels of the game. You start as the Manhunter, creeping in the shadows and sinisterly stalking your prey. But the gangs become increasingly more aware and dangerous until eventually, you become the hunted one. They've captured your family, and continuously ambushed you and thrown you into these horrible situations over and over. When the player realizes the escalation of events, you realize that you are fighting to survive, not to simply murder goons. Sticking to the shadows becomes less of a predatorial stalking, and more of a necessity to hide yourself from the hunters. I feel like this shift became apparent to me during the mall mission. It felt like the first mission that made Cash highly vulnerable. They take away your ability to hide and strap you with a pistol against a mall full of armed lunatics. You leave yourself open for too long, and you're surely dead. You don't feel like a powerful slayer anymore, but a man stuck in a life-or-death loop. The ending seemed to maybe hint at this idea. The credits music is angelic and light. You didn't just serial murder everyone for fun (well, maybe in the beginning), you've freed yourself from this savage and twisted game of hide-and-seek that coerced you into playing it.
This is one of my most favorite games of all time, I bought a physical copy when it first came out, lent it to my cousin and never saw it again, a cousin who saved over a 100% complete GTA Vice City file, and who I would never play video games with again. I bought digital copies of Manhunt on both Playstation and Xbox. It's a the only game that terrifies me and excites me at the same time. Even though I know everything that's going to happen I feel uncomfortable when I play it, yet still want to keep playing. The combat encounters where enemies jump out and scare you, it's best to run away, hide in the shadows and execute them as they come looking for you.
One of the things I liked most about this game was the way it progressed. In the beginning, you feel weak and intimidated by the Hunters. It takes awhile to get used to the controls and combat mechanics, and you're constantly learning new tricks and how to use the environment to your advantage. But by the end of the game, YOU become the hunter. You've mastered all the skills and weapons. You feel legitimately dangerous. An apex predator. And the enemies scale up accordingly (e.g. the Cerberus Unit).
anyone else love how the gaming community has discovered manhunt 1/2 finally after all these years and the recent influx of all these manhunt videos? gotta love it man, I was waiting for people to finally recognize its glory and im glad its happening🙌🏾
The game aged and is therefore not perceived as brutal as it was perceived back in the day, youtube recently lifted the ban on manhunt's playthroughs and so did twitch (only the first one). This is why the game kinda became more mainstream today
We all collectively went out to look for examples of rockstar's might before gta five, to remind ourselves that these guys used to make games. Quite a few, myself included, likely have heard of manhunt before and are only now looking at it out of sheer curiosity.
This was the one that got away from me as a kid. To this day I haven’t played it. I remember the kids on the playground/06RU-vid spreading rumors about Piggsy in San Andreas. Fun times
how i found out about this game i watched a saw the game all death compilation this came up as a similar video I was blown away even when the game looked already look old in the graphics I always liked the vhs style too i really sold me instantly its pretty a good game buy it its very good
Fun facts: The voice actor for The Tramp was Mark Margolis (Hector Salamanca from Breaking Bad/Better Call Saul, R.I.P.) and the voice actor for Fug is Glenn Fleshler (The Yellow King from True Detective Season 1 and George Remus from Boardwalk Empire).
This game holds a special place in my heart. Started writing and performing music under the name "Projekt Smiley" due to this game. The Smileys just stuck with me
I feel like it would be one of the easier adaptations to make. If they could nail the visual and audio aesthetic, it wouldn't even need a strong plot. If there was a well made art house style Manhunt film, I'd watch the fuck out of that
I had this when it originally released on the PS2. One really immersive feature of the game was that it supported the use of a headset. I had one that came with SOCOM Navy SEALS. The single earpiece and mic worked with the game. The audio from the director would play through the headset only, making it feel like you were wearing an earpiece and you could make sounds into the mic which would attract the hunters. The volume of the noise you made mattered too. You could literally whisper, shout or anything in between and it would affect the size of the noise ring on the radar.
Seriously, I got recommend your channel through The Getaway video. I LOVED that game. And now I've watched your videos on The Warriors game, GTA, and now this. Thank you for going back in time to relive these gems (though I've never played this one). Cheers!
The best little detail I loved in manhunt was when you entered a new area with an enemies head on your belt it would get covered in a plastic bag. Like even the developers decided it would be sanitary to put the head in a bag 😂
no way, just about to watch bully retrospective and you upload this! I'm excited, I never actually played or heard much about this so not sure if I'll fully watch if I feel I wanna actually do a play through myself
Hey, just got recommended this video and I have to say that I really like your style of editing and narrating. I like how you're making points about the design and balance of the game while making it feel like a personal "gameplay diary" by explaining "And then I went there, and I found that" etc. Has the vibes of "A friend tells you about a game they recently played."
T2 won't let it happen. They want everyone to forget about this IP and focus on GTA Online. They want to be "this cool game publisher" without any controversies with huge budget and expansive online component with microtransactions.
Great to see you cover this gem, as it's among my absolute favorite Rockstar games! It's a very good stealth survival horror game set in a interesting stark gritty urban setting, which reminds me of the Nick Cage movie "8mm", with a quite disturbing atmosphere! I pre-ordered this game & the strategy guide, playing & completing it all the first night I got it! I especially like beating it on the Hardcore difficulty to unlock the terrific 4 bonus levels which are quite good! I have a complete walk through of this game without commentary as I've mastered all of it, beating it several times! I recommend playing the sequel which has even better mechanics & weapons with excellent environmental kills available!
If Mortal Kombat can get away with realistic fatalities in this day and age, I'd really want a Manhunt with current gen graphics. I'm probably a psycho. 🤷🏻♂️
Mortal combat has you play as super hero's and villains. ManHunt as you take part in snuff films its much more grounded and a real thing that happends.
My problem with these games being so “ raunchy” and looked down upon when rdr 2’s gore system is the most brutal and violent looking and feeling. If it’s a video game that is made for adults there shouldn’t be any opinions about kids playing it to swindle decisions of game making.
Love this game the fact that it was horror game more grounded in reality makes it stand out more, also the fact that you as player are somewhat the source of the horror. The combination of stealth and horror Thriller is cool. I also love the take downs one issue i have with allot of stealth games is the lack vaierty in stealth take downs also love the getting the yellow and red kills adds allot more tension to the game and makes pulling off a stealth kill more rewarding.
Just a side note: You don't have to distract the War Dog with the tranq rifle. He stares in that same direction so you can sneak up on him with no issues.
Does anyone else ever think of Boards of Canada when they hear the music from Manhunt? I know Boards of Canada didn't influence the music but it still sounds similar to me and that was always really cool for me. I fell in love with this game when it first came out. I was 13 when it was released and I was also really into discovering new music then. It's not just the music that was intriguing but I'd be lying if I said it wasn't a major draw. I absolutely adore the sounds and music in this game.
The game is infamous in germany, it got forbidden to sell or even share instantly and its one of the very few games where the ban never got liftet. The list of banned games is not long either. But thats how everybody got interested in it, only shows how useless banning these things is.
28:40 honestly i think I'd do the same thing. Questions are probably useless in this situation, as is talking to starkweather. But family? There has to be some level of panic on both ends, and he knows how dangerous the surrounding area is. I'd tell them to leave, too!
the more i watch videos on manhunt the more i realize i need to play the first one i played manhunt 2 when i was younger and as a kid its like yay violence and i enjoyed it but 1 has imo an interesting situation with a character we know nothing about being forced to kill just for freedom and being tricked at every turn and you dont have to actually be super violent. great video as always fuzzy will you be making a video on manhunt 2 i think that would also be really good
Played both, 1 is by far the best! I got 2 on Wii and that was fun, having to mimic the kills with the remote but the story isn't memorable or very replayable at all outside a few levels. After replaying 1 over the winter, it's a game where I loved the story cuz I'd remembered it well for like 15 years then after beating it, going back to get 5 stars on all scenes was also very enjoyable! Easily still holds up today and there's not too many games where you can say that, there's classics then cult classics and this is definitely a cult classic! It's surprising considering it was made by R* back when they were putting out gems left and right but this series never gained the love it deserves, it's got a cult following but it's nothing like the GTA trilogy has when imo, manhunt is right up there with San Andreas and Vice city! Maybe it's the darker tone, maybe it's the more difficult gameplay and need for stealth, idk but either way, it's truly an underrated masterpiece!
Dunno if somebody commented this already, but part of the Piggsy fight I found the most intimidating was the sound of his chainsaw that can be heard throughout the stage
Rockstar's "ManHunt" one of the best horror psychological game ever made....it's a gourmet meal that satisfies your pallet with blood gore finishers, dark environments, spooky looking characters, sinister in game music scores, & it's creepy storyline. What also made this game a mega success is the media hype it have gotten with it's criticism & controversy lead many countries to banned the game from it's public. Today, in 2023, the game aged very well....This is a game clearly deserves a sequel for sure ..... ⚔️🗡️🛡️⚔️🗡️🛡️⚔️🗡️
One of my all-time favorite games ever made! If you love it as much as I do, there's an online petition to have a 3rd one made and I encourage everyone to go sign it!
One of my fav channels now love that in the video you go through the full game as well as showing important pieces as well it’s great to see these old games still being played keep it up, can you do bully next ???
I remember that when I went to business college, one of my classmates talked about Manhunt non-stop, as he liked beating people up. The frequency how often he talked about the game and killing people honestly did creep me out as I felt that perhaps he enjoyed the game little too much...
This game surprised me with how good it was. I guess I should of known it was amazing because it was made by Rockstar in their prime. It's one of those games where it just has a perfect synergy with the soundtrack, gameplay, atmosphere, and story. I always just kind of thought of it as more of a shock value game based on everything I had heard of it but it's actually a masterpiece imo. Love the level design and enemies I'm really glad I got a chance to play it because it's a new favorite of mine. The gore and brutality makes it even better it's one of those one of a kind games they would never make today.
I got this game for Xmas when I was 14 or so. But I completed it and got so much more out of it when I was 19 and living in Philadelphia. I needed more life experience in order to appreciate this masterpiece
Awesome video Slippers old boy. I loved Manhunt, first time I played it..I won’t deny I experienced it via the ps4 ported version. But holy shit every moment of the game was intense, chilling and strangely addicting. I instantly loved and hooked to this game I went and bought Manhunt 2 for the ps2 at a bullshit extorted price but I didn’t care 😅 this franchise instantly rose to the top! Which makes me wonder, will you ever cover Manhunt 2?
I’m hoping more people see this this game and give it enough hype to help get the opportunity to make a 3rd. I’ve always wanted to see a follow up on James cash with a more in depth story and make it 10x darker. Also with all the games out now with how graphic they are I don’t see the problem in making a 3rd manhunt. If parents are so worried about their children being exposed to games like this maybe they shouldn’t be letting them play M rated games to begin with. I thought these were supposed to be for adults
Yes. A 3rd updated installment on next gen hardware would be awesome. I feel Manhunt 2 wasn't really faithful to the original content. I'd like to see a new protagonist or perhaps multiple playable characters and maybe a different setting. Like innawoods or something. Multi-player with Hunters and Prey. Survival aspects. There's so much they could do with it. The core concept of Manhunt is solid and interesting. Plenty of opportunities for storybuilding.
It is somewhat unlikely because R* cannot monetise it. Awful that that's the primary motivator for videogames nowadays, but it's true. I believe that's why they haven't gone for another Midnight Club game too....
Soooooo that guy in the electric chair...the Darkwoods Penitentiary went through a riot and the Smiley's overthrown the guards and Warden...that guy in the chair probably wasn't a bad guy lol.
I think I was like 12 when this game came out. My older brother couldn't beat it so he gave it to me. First time I saw it I was hooked lol. The violence was so real, and so raw. I beat it and replayed it start to finish many times, and it always had the same dirty feel to it. I was addicted to this game tbh and I can kind of see why ppl tried to ban it. I can't say it helped me adjust into functional adolescence but it was so much fun and just had a feel to it that I've never seen since. One of my all time favorite games and part of who I am today lmao
I was such a lucky kid, my dad understood i knew videogames werent real life and he let me play whatever I wanted despite the rating. I bought manhunt when i was about 10 or 11 and i still love it
It was a bloody difficult one too. This game brought on a lot of my panic attacks. I'd often never jumped out of my skin so much in my life. Wasn't Carcer city mentioned in GTA 3? I'm thinking that the one who's voice was used for the white rabbit was also one of the voices in the chat radio station on GTA Vice City. I think it was the one who was the nudist.
25:38 you can just walk behind enemies and they won’t notice you unless you’re walking on gravel or some other surface that makes noise, thats how I dealt with him
Hey Fuzzy, sorta new sub here! Been loving the retrospectives a lot. Idk if you take requests, but Jet Set Radio and Jet Set Radio Future would be some awesome games to review!
I managed to find this on my recent holiday for $10,which is a steal considering it was banned where I live. Also managed to get it on steam when you could trade keys
After watching about a million reviews I’d the game, I had to buy it and got lucky at a guy’s booth in a huge flea market in FL! I can’t remember how much it costed but it was between $20-50 USD and came in great condition with the manual on the PS2! I know I’m not the best player around but I was not expecting it to kick my ass so hard 😂 I’m likely just going to keep playing through the first couple levels until I really get a grasp on things. Caddy reviewed the sequel and thinks encouraging the more gruesome kills with its style points could’ve been what upset people and I think that can apply to this game as well. Plus, Carcer City is based off multiple areas in the US where severe crime and poverty runs rampant and unfortunately the grimy and dilapidated areas are all too real and life expectancy is rather low. If they did a game today, employees would need references to make things as realistic as possible and prolly examine explicit gore videos and such which can be mentally damaging esp if you need to look at and watch it multiple times over. These games made employees feel gross to make since, at the time, it was p realistic esp with the audios. I want another game but putting others through that wouldn’t be good at all. Imagine going to work and needing to basically watch liveleak videos and gruesome crime scene photos daily for a long time for the sake of making everything brutally realistic. Need I remind every one of the shit employees needed to watch for TLOU2? There’s a reason the game is so brutal. TLDR; I bought the game recently for PS2 and it’s kicking my ass but is fun, Caddiarus suggested with the sequel the issue was likely caused by being rewarded for more brutal kills, and I’d love a new game but if TLOU2 is anything to go by, employees would need to essentially watch Liveleak vids and ref crime scene photos on the daily to make it as brutally realistic as possible. I wouldn’t want to put anyone through that.
I think my favorite part of this game was that a headset was compatible with this game if you had one for the PS2. So you could use the mic to create sound distractions while playing.
I'd like to see Manhunt return. Unfortunately, the Rockstar who made single player focused games is probably never coming back. Thanks GTAV... Good video. Hope you cover Manhunt 2 too.
Wait no! My game always used to freeze on the pigzy fight at the end of the game. It was unavoidable. Super disappointing because this game was an absolute gem. 💎
