Manic Miner was created on the 16K ZX81 by Ales Martinik in 2001 (poss. 2002) Conf.1984
It was originally released by Bug Byte Software & Re-released by Software Projects in 1983
Thanks to Sinclair Computer Collection FB page for bringing the game to my attention - / sinclaircollection
and also to the Central Cavern (The Wonderful World of Willy) Facebook group too for not only showing it to me but hosting it on their page too - / 1572079626367469
It's available to download over at jswremakes.emuu...

Rastislav Rihack provided me with a bit more information and also updated date of creation of Manic Miner on the ZX81, which you can read the translated version (thanks again Rastislav) below.
Ales Martinik - "Yes, it was me, who during the holiday in 1984 "down-ported" and optimized Manic Minder to fit into 16KB ZX81. Original game on Spectrum is 48KB and is written very clear (author was 14), so the data storage could be optimized. Worst problem was the pseudo-graphics for ZX81, because from the 256 combination of 8 pixels were available only something about 120, so the proper combination must be chosen to make "persons", monsters and bushes look realistic."

Astonishing! And even better than the original which was ruined by horrific colours and “music”. A masterpiece.

I really wish when Sinclair made the 16KB Ram Pack, they had included a small ROM that would have extended basic to allow one to simply swap out the (or parts) of the character set for user defined characters. Which I know is what they did with these Hi Res games, but without requiring us normal folk to have genius programming skills.

Astonishing work - The stuff guys have created since the heyday of the 81 and Spectrum is amazing.

Yup, in the description Rastislav Rihack providedme with the correct date and more detailed information on the games creation. I'd like to find Ales and ask him a couple of questions about it's creation :D

It really is that good. Also you've just shown me how to **bold** something on RU-vid...that's quite great too :D

I must say that these Zx81 videos have really made up for the current break in Speccy videos!

I'll still be throwing Spectrum videos into the mix, but I'm certainly enjoying loading up ZX81 games.

With the speed this runs at, we know the CPU has enough time to do music with the sound expansion. :-)

Honestly I had less concerns with running Crysis than in this. 😁

It's amazing isn't it. All crammed into the ZX81.

Lol I think this runs faster than the original speccy version. Have played this on an emulator, you can forgive the collision detection as it's such a feat of coding.

Completely agree. This is such an amazing feat of ZX81 wizardry I'll look the other way :D

Does it needs a hi-res mod on the RAM expansion cartridge?

I've only managed to play this on EightyOne. I don't have a ZXpand for my ZX81...but I want one.

Just got me one with a ram expansion. I saw that this games works with pseudo hires, so it will play without the mod... I think.

Pseudo should be a-ok. I've dropped hints for a ZXpand though I know there as rare as crocodile tears so I'm not expecting to see one under the tree.

+Vincent GR sensible prices? If I end up with some Christmas pennies from the kids I may go over there.
