Also, from what I learned it was this concept that the ultimate goal was to have a country bounded by two oceans. Further, it was the justification of the atrocities in the expansion westward as in ".....the ends justify the means". Because it was believed that it was a god given right therefore spilling a little blood was to be expected and forgiven by god.
To be fair, the Native Americans at the time saw no problem with using violence, war, and conquest to settle the issue of who controlled the land. At least, they had no issue with the idea until _after_ they'd all lost.
I watch your videos all the time, i'm a junior/ senior, and i will be taking my regents next week, and all your videos are helping me for my u.s history regents! thank you soo much. keep teaching!
"For myself," [Ulysses] Grant wrote later about the United States war against Mexico, "I was bitterly opposed to the measure, and to this day regard the war, which resulted, as one of the most unjust ever waged by a stronger against a weaker nation." The political, cultural and social era of the 1830s birthed a mission transcribed as Manifest Destiny, America's expansion westward into the lands occupied by native tribes and the Republic of Mexico. This national attitude was a major cause of the war with Mexico and had tragic results for many. Grant, though against the war personally, served to the best of his ability as a matter of duty.
I really appreciate that you tried to mention as many intricate, important, incredible moments in history that were even slightly connected to manifest destiny, but I also feel like you've talked about these things for so long that you've lost the idea of how it connects to our modern world, in terms of history repeating itself. You're a brilliant guy, and I have about 20 tabs open just from what you mentioned here, but I'm worried about how much you speak of as if it's only a part of the past, and not what it could mean to the future of civilization. Personally, I think that you have an absolutely amazing mind, and I would love for you to post a video describing what your personal thoughts are regarding the contemporary changes in the world, global warming, the wars that are present, the weather changes, what is possibly or potentially going to happen with everything that we're experiencing now. I paused this vid so many times to research so many things that you've mentioned, many of which I already knew about, but I'm glad I get to reopen them in my mind because you spoke with a fervency in this 5-mintue breakdown. Just please...be a voice that can speak truth in this world that is, essentially, falling to pieces...We need people like you to keep our eyes above the water...and I mean that wholeheartedly, and with fear in my soul...
My history teacher had us watch this vid for an assignment. Pretty good, don't see why some people are commenting on things other than the topic presented in the video... Good video!
It WAS a democratic idea. Now it's a profoundly religious one that many underestimate. Manifest destiny coupled with supremacy has been around us since the beginning of civilization. Religion-based Manifest Destiny and Supremacy are the MAIN reason for hate crimes. BTW: I'm here because I like knowing things.
Am I the only one who watched this because they weren't asked by their teacher and just loves learning history? And yes I'm a weeb and plus I'm not even American I'm a Filipino
I want to say thank you. Next week I have to do a presentation (in Spanish😁) about manifest destiny, and this video provided a good overview, and also brought up ideas for further exploration on the topic.
You skipped over the second part. 1) An act of god pushed us to pursue risky and dangerous situations and 3) Destiny, can't stop it. Would 2 be fulfilling a higher purpose? Seems very close to one.

I like your video. There's something that came to my mind with all this. When my 63 year old sweet Mexican mother was studying the Naturalization American book to become a U.S citizen I was helping her study, she needed to study 100 question with U.S. Basic history. When you do the test, they only ask you at most 6 out of the 100, of course, you don't know which ones...well One of those questions was something like "What is one of the requirements to become a U.S citizen?" One of the requirements was....Give up your loyalty to any other country and be loyal only to the United States. It was hard for me to believe was I was reading because, how can one stop being loyal to your country of origin to give your solemn loyalty to a new country? To me loyalty is accompanied by respect. As a child I was thought to respect others as I respect my self, there fore, be loyal to a country that is welcoming you as you are loyal to the land that witnessed your birth, your homeland.
I tell my 7th graders to remember it this way: "Manifest Dest...Move out West...and Pass the TEST!!" Also, Whigs and Northerners were opposed to Manifest Destiny, Texas Annexation, Mexican-American War, etc. because of concerns over the expansion of slavery. Hence, the Wilmot Proviso, Compromise of 1850, Kansas-Nebraska Act, etc. etc. Great video, Keith!
Patrick Henagan not true. The North had plans for annexing Canada and taking out the Native Americans in the West. No wonder they wouldn't let the South secede....their plan was to control all of North America.
The speaker needs to slow his patter down so that one can absorb one fact before he jumps into another, and another, and another. He has some good points, but he puts them out so rapid-fire that they are hard to absorb.
manifest destiny is a term similar to what you would find in a self help book,,saying that if you believe or think a certain way that you manifest it into your reality,,complete BS. they didn't manifest shyt, they stole and murdered to get their shyt.
Some Americans though this concept applied to the North and south as well. They had an amendment in their constitution to allow Canada to join them (they just assumed we would want that) and they were insulted when we said no and they attacked us soon after. I dread the day when America looks North again for their next expansion. I'd like to see you do a video on Canada/America relations over history as well.
@EpicWafflez515 I'm the proudest daughter ever because SHE PASSED. She earned the United States citizenship with very hard work, good behavior and study. Something that I KNOW you don't do.
i have a ten minute speech that has to include this thats due in less than 12 hours, i just started it, and i dont understand any of this lmaooo wish me luck
WOW...There is a comic book by IMAGE called "Manifest Destiny". I ignorantly bought a few copies of the book, not knowing I was supporting Racism! I now will get rid of THEM!
I would recommend playing the video at 50% speed. I might sound like I'm an alien but i've been working on slowing things down over the years. And I do appreciate the constructive criticism, we can all do better
Is manifest destiny related to civil war? Maybe not in a imperialistic sense but rather in a democratic sense. Usa as a nation, one nation, one democracy, the first and full democracy of contemporary times. Usa as an experiment of democracy like ancien athens. Where athens failed, usa goes on
Put a finger down if you don’t know what’s going on in your US history class and googled “annexation of Texas” and then you clicked on the video with the shortest time duration only to realize that they mentioned “manifest destiny” which is something you don’t really know or remember so you then go to the RU-vid search bar and type that phrase to find this video only to watch the whole video yet still have no idea what is going on. 🖐😐 -> 🤟😔
I'm sorry but you're not going back far enough. This goes back to before Christopher Columbus whose real name is Nicholas Ypsilanti. The Moorish Empire ruled Western Europe for over seven hundred years years until they were finally conquered in 1491 under Queen Isabella and King Ferdinand. The same year the pope made it legal to enslave all people of color. The next year Christopher Columbus was sent out on the Nina, Pinta and Santa Maria. There were no slaves on these ships because they were part of a military Intel. They returned to Europe only to come back to the Caribbean in 1496 with 17 warships and 1300 soldiers. But the European has been coming here since at least the 4th Century ACE when 8 Viking / Phoenician ships carrying Druids landed in Nova Scotia and Montauk, New York led by Ambrosius Aurelius who you also know as Merlin. His brother was Uther Pendragon The rest is history! Namaste
The number of kids (and even worse, adults) who don't know about this is pretty sad. We're not trying to make Caucasians feel guilty. We're just trying to make sure you think before you say, "Go back to where you came from." Or anything else bad in general.
