You haven’t seen this before! Guns have become another reality of Manipur, the dark underbelly of a land divided by hatred. Team NTT- Tamal Saha and Rony Santra visited a training camp in Churachandpur district. The trouble in Manipur has been on for more than 3 months. In a divided state, people have formed their armies to fight a battle against each other. Both sides claim they want to protect their land. But at the heart of it lies the larger question - if the battle has pushed future of young people into uncertainty. At this training camp, in an undisclosed location, young people were seen undergoing the physical and weapons training. Similar to the military training of Indian Armed Forces, young people were seen going through drills at the command of the instructor. It was a full fledged training to be at the frontline of the peripheral areas, what they say, ‘in the interest of the integrity of their land”. At the training camp the children and youth were taught as how to handle weapons, for now they were using dummy ones but very soon they could pick up the real ones. Many of the young people we spoke with, aspire to join the Indian Army. They say they want to serve the nation but for now they “want to serve their land”. The young minds have accepted the idea of a war they are gearing up to fight.
