The deconstruction of the distinctive power station on the former Amcor paper mill site in Alphington Melbourne. Built in 1954, the boiler house was one of the first buildings in Melbourne constructed with a curtain walling, where the outer layer or wall of a building is non-structural.
MANN utilised BIM (Building Information Modelling). This involved scanning all internal and external components onto a point cloud model, enabling a comprehensive assessment of key components and associated risks before executing the demolition sequence. The main stack, towering independently at 63 metres, was meticulously engineered for removal in crane-able sections.
Given the heritage status of portions of the old power station, manual disconnection and continuous vibration monitoring was required. Each structural steel member was lowered and designated for decontamination to clear hazardous paints.
All demolition material was separated onsite and an overall 99.78% recycle rate was achieved for this project.
