[Originally released on DVD in 2014]
The rugged beauty of the American West comes alive in the Wasatch Mountains of Utah. From snow-covered peaks, to sheer cliffs and deep canyons containing a wealth of minerals and history, this land has been witness to a battle that has lasted for over 130 years...The battle of trains over Soldier Summit.
7idea Productions paid several visits to this former Rio Grande line and offers a stunning look at mountain railroading in the Wasatch during the fall and winter seasons. Union Pacific coal and merchandise trains are seen daily with manned helpers used on heavy westbounds. BNSF makes an appearance via trackage rights and Amtrak's California Zephyr slips through the night. The Utah Railway steals the show with their incredible power lash-ups of Morrison Knudsen MK 50-3's and six mid-train swing helpers!
Heading west out of Helper, you’ll witness trains thundering through the Price River Canyon. View trains racing through Colton as they march up the east side of Soldier Summit! See all three levels of the Gilluly Loops as we hike through this remote section of the railroad and visit the famed Thistle Tunnels. From beautiful fall weather to heavy blowing snow, our hi-definition cameras caught it all for you to enjoy in the comfort of your living room. This is mountain railroading you can see and feel!

To the West of Soldier Summit is Scofield, site of the Winter Quarters Mine Disaster, where over 200 miners lost their lives on May 1st, 1900, in an explosion.

The Heart of the Rio Grande from Helper to Provo and Roper Yard in Salt Lake this line sees everything. Visit the ghost towns along the way, visit sidings like Tucker, Colton, Kyune, and others, race through Price Canyon, Nolan Tunnel, Kyune Tunnel, and crest the grade at Colton, visit the Summit, snake through all levels of Gilluly Loop down to Tucker and Tie Fork, race through Detour, visit the Narrows, and pass through the remains of a landslide at Thistle. Welcome to Soldier Summit Rio Grande's legacy route over the Wasatch.

04:10 all journeys over Soldier Summit have to begin some place and that some place is here in the appropriately named town of Helper Junction Utah it is here the locomotives that power the trains begin their journey over Soldier Summit. In Helper the locomotives are assigned sometimes they even have to be placed in the middle and at the rear of the train to get it over to the next station on the line Provo. As the name suggests Helper is by definition a railroad town it is home of the Rio Grande Museum which tells the history of the line. Between Grand Junction Colorado and Provo Utah Helper is a rest station for Zephyr. When zephyr comes in the train is refueled, the trash is removed, and a fresh crew assigned before the train heads on to either Green River or Provo. Before it was shut down at the turn of the century Helper was also the home base for Utah Rail. When Savage Energy sold their coal contracts to Union Pacific and to BNSF all of Utah's locomotives except for three SD50s were sold to Kyle railroad in Limon Colorado the remaining locomotives including several Geeps and SD40s were sold to Salt Lake City Southern who does switching at the Provo Yard and at the new headquarters for Utah Rail Midvale Yard in Salt Lake City you can see the ex guitar rail locomotive fleet every single time you visit Phillipsburg Kansas or Limon Colorado has these locomotives are now earning their keep on the Kyle Railroad. Other than that you have plenty of trains from both BNSF, Union Pacific, and Amtrak as they make their trips daily over Soldier Summit. Trains that you will find here daily are the dirt train what's takes garbage out to the dump at Sunnyside on the Green River subdivision, the helper local which takes empty cars from Helper back to Roper Yard in Salt Lake, the flagship train of the line M-NYRO the daily Denver to Salt Lake manifest, BNSF train PRODEN which picks up Utah rail cars from Provo and delivers them to Denver, and the star of Soldier Summit Amtrak 6 herself the Silver Lady Zephyr. You occasionally find a couple of coal trains from both railroads at Helper attaching the namesake locomotives to the train and mostly you will find locals coming in and out of the yard hauling oil or crude trains heading to the refinery in Salt Lake or to Richmond in California from The Savage oil terminal in Price on the Green River subdivision or from Wildcat on Utah's Gordon Branch. If you want to action on the Soldier Summit you will find it here in Helper.

Are all 3 of those middle engines manned? Is that an Engineer s position or can a Conductor man that position
@dhenschel4
@dhenschel4 4 дня назад
Only the lead train on the point is manned, and the helper's are only manned when they are used temporarily going up and/or down a grade and split off when not needed and return in the other direction. I'm not an expert tho, I learn watching these and other train videos.
