Additional fun fact about the mantis shrimp: We have 3 kinds of photoreceptors in our eyes (blue, red, and green). It's how we're able to see all of the incredible colors displayed in everything from sunsets to, well, mantis shrimp. But these little guys have *16* kinds of photoreceptor cells in their eyes. And we have absolutely no idea why they would ever need that many.

@Casey_W 7 лет назад
jsfbr The Baader-Meinhof gang were a major terrorist organization in the 80's, primarily in (what was then) West Germany. I believe they were an offshoot of the Red Army Faction. Apparently someone heard about this group several years ago and then in a matter of a few days came across references to them several times, resulting in the phrase "Baader-Meinhof Phenomenon". Specifically, this refers to coming across something new or unusual and then coming across it again shortly after. Kind of the opposite of deja vu (vuja de?)

We were taught many biological sounds at Fleet Sonar School early in 1973 by listening to many different recordings. The snapping shrimp made their sound by "clicking" their thumb against their "hand" like a castanet. This didn't seem right so I asked how a soft crustacean shell could produce such a loud source level like that. The instructors said they weren't really sure but somehow the results were real that they could produce a LOUD noise. This little tidbit of knowledge rattled around in my head until about 2005ish when I saw a video about the mechanics of the noise they produce and I was amazed at the simple physics involved. PS: on sonar large populations of snapping shrimp sound like frying bacon. I do not remember ever hearing mantis shrimp though. It still amazes me that people have trouble understanding that water boils because of vapor pressure not heat. Also I'm surprised that the graph showing the sound of the mantis shrimp cavitation "bubble" only makes one sound instead of multiple rebounds that reduce in amplitude with each rebound. You are correct about the Here is the link to the video that gave me the answer I was looking for: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Zg10Et8FEWc.html

Provided the shrimp is put in a glass tank, can the shrimp brake it by punching it? Similar, if you have an aquarium with shrimp and you decide to put your hand in the water and pick the shrimp with your hand, will that put you in danger of the shrimp breaking your fingers?
@0LoneTech
@0LoneTech 7 лет назад
bios47 In my estimation, the shrimp can apply tremendous force, but it's still quite small. You would risk tiny tears and bruising more than broken bones, and the glass might be more likely to chip than crack depending on its structure. The strike is specialised to crack hard shells.

@PaulNewfield-PasadenaCAU-wb4xg
@PaulNewfield-PasadenaCAU-wb4xg 3 года назад
Boiling isn’t caused by temperature, it’s caused by pressure! Lowering the pressure will lower the boiling point of water, and increasing pressure will raise the boiling point! Water only boils at 100c/212F at sea level, but at higher elevations will boil at lower temperatures!

I used hemostats to feed him chunks of frozen white shrimp a few times a day. The only thing he smashed in the tank was tunnels through the rock, I assume because I kept him well fed. My girls were enthralled with him. I could ALWAYS entice him to come out of his tunnel to eat. He was hysterical, we would see his eyes poke out, then he would come out and fetch his meal.
