After 20 years of driving an automatic, I went back to manual! My daughter & I went car shopping on line, & I told her the FIRST criteria was that it MUST be a manual, no matter what make or model it is! Found a 2006 Scion Tc for $2000.00! WOW not only a 5 speed, but a 2-door coupe as well!!! It's got a Toyota motor, so it's a mechanical 'goody'. LOVE IT!!!!!! I'm 64 & I will NOT go back to automatic. If push comes to shove & something major happens to this car, I'll do without a car until I find another "stick"!!
@robot3759
@robot3759 2 года назад
Why though? If you live in a urban or suburban area (assuming you do, all but 14% of the population does) automatic will be better like 99% of the time. The only thing you'd need a manual for on roads is something like short-shifting to gain traction through a corner and the only reason you should be doing that is if you race (which I sure as hell hope you're not doing, especially in a Scion), otherwise its just dangerous driving. Don't get me wrong, I love the fun of manual shifting; I play racing games a ton (depending on the track anything between 40-70 shifts every minute and a half) and always use the manual shift option. However, do I think it is practical for daily use? No; I think its between slightly and extremely annoying when all I want my car to do is get me from one place to another. The only argument I really see for manuals that isn't just personal preference is the lower purchase and upkeep cost, although that doesn't really seem to be a factor in your decision, so at this rate I'm pretty sure you just have lost touch with the reality that automatic cars are better than manuals on paved roads (especially considering how you type the word "online" as two words; it screams that you haven't interacted with modern technology since 1980). If you want to shift, just get a sim racing setup and play racing games (total cost maybe $380 including the console, game, and sim setup if you buy all used); you'll be able to do it a lot more often (more = better, right?) and actually do some of the fun things you can do with manual shifting as opposed to hassling through gear changes on clogged city streets.

I prefer the iMT (Intelligent Manual Transmission) version of Hyundai and Kia Motors. For those who are not aware, it is a combination of Manual and Automatic transmissions. Basically only 2 pedals and no clutch involved, it has manual transmission gear. You can change gears without the need for a clutch. But the only downside is, it is available only in Hyundai and Kia cars.

In the UK most people take their test in a manual (passing in an automatic means your license only covers you to drive an automatic - restricting your choice of used cars). Generally people will only take their test in an automatic if they really can't cope with a manual. Because people have learnt to drive in a manual they then generally buy, drive and get used to a manual. I think you very quickly find that you don't even think about changing gear because, as you say, it just becomes an automatic activity. The problem comes when you get into an automatic after years of only driving manuals. The left foot won't keep still, and because automatics seem to have oversized brake pedals, the automatic reflex reaction of the clutch foot can result in some pretty harsh breaking when it accidently catches the brake pedal!

Automatics are more popular because people only look at the first few years of ownership which is under warranty. At best you'll save $50 a year on gasoline by choosing the auto but then when the car reaches 100k miles you'll have to pony up 5 grand for a new transmission. I think the crossing point happened in the early 2010's, when automatics started to get six or more forward gears and electronics started to replace a lot of the complex hydraulics of older automatic transmissions, dramatically reducing the weight of these transmissions. A kg more or less, those are thoughts that belong to race cars. Further, lorries use a manual - but - automatic, they suggest suggestively reliability in what the standard cars use. But it has no resmblence technically. Also.No normal person wants 6 or 8 gears ?! In a car with much hp. Lorries do this. You want to revv. Therefore you do not want to have 8 gears. Or you dont understand what the verb revv means. This depends on what speeds you go..when we live in the 3d world , with the earth and all, the revv thing happens between 30 and 90 kmh mostly. That's unfortunate. They should become more technologically advanced and drive automatics. I learned a manual and drove it for 7 years in the States but there's really no point when automatic is easier on the driver and much more efficient with modern transmission technology. The whole "Europe is superior because we drive standard" rhetoric is so backwards its laughable. Comparable to a person riding a horse laughing at someone riding in a steam engine. "Haha you have to do less work because your technology is more advanced, so stupid." I've driven both for a decade. They can both be fun, but acting as if a continent is superior to another on the basis of a vehicles less advances transmission is borderline moronic. Acting as if driving a manual transmission is some difficult skill is absurd. Its quite literally simple to operate a manual transmission. I learned at 13 years old. Comfort items in cars evolved differently in different markets. The Hydromatic developed in Detroit in the 40s and 50s quickly became common because US cars offered base models with individual options. You could buy the big ticket option of automatic for +$300 and forgo the clock, tach, better upholstery fabric, .... That would nickle and dime easily to $300 (about a thousand by 1980) Air conditioning was the same in the 50s and 60s. Typical European "people's cars" were pretty bare bones and rough in the 50s/60s. Sure a Rolls or Benz were super cars, but a Morris Minor/Mini, Renault, Fiat or VW were tinny, old 30s tech and rattly. If a hydromatic was even offered it was as much as the cost of the car. It made little sense, especially as over half the population on the continent and UK only "drove" a bus or train seat until the 70s. By then habits had settled. I live in the US and have owned manuals since I was 16 in 77. However my Mom learned to drive on a 3 on the tree manual Ford, but by my childhood would never again consider driving a stick shift.

I will not deny that Automatic Transmission can sometimes make your life more convenient, especially when driving uphill through a massive traffic congestion. However, manual transmission really requires you to be more alert. To be more calculating of the gear and of driving. You have better connection to your engine also when driving manual. If your gear is wrong, the engine talks back to you. You have a better overall "feel" how your engine is doing. I always say that driving is both reflex and active thinking. I drive a manual car because not only do I have better control of the machine, It also keeps me mentally alert.

I don’t like people who say stuff like this. Maybe you like driving a manual and I know what you mean it does become just second nature and half the time you aren’t even thinking about it. But automatic cars have the benefit of being easy to drive even at lower speeds meaning city driving becomes easier and less of a hassle. Automatic cars are also more likely to choose the correct gear and are these days actually almost better at conserving fuel so can be more cost efficient in that regard

It depends on what you want from a car. Most of my driving (in Kenya and South Sudan) is off road so manual is far better for me. Also, when you're driving old vehicles in extreme conditions and something goes wrong far from help (as it often does), you can start a manual vehicle by towing it or pushing it down a hill, which you can't do with an automatic.

Why!? Why can't I just trail brake, rev match and double clutch to get the torque I need at the time I need it... Sure... it's not a sports car (not like I have any experience driving one LOL) it's a Family Car, but for the love of God, the lack/delay in control/response isn't for me... not saying it's all bad it's just... Thanks for a balanced presentation of the options. An aspect which could be overlooked is that the automatic transmission (AT) shifts gear under some load, while with the manual transmission, gear changes are done with the load disconnected. This does burden the clutches of an AT more.

I have a five speed manual transmission and with proper driving and down shifting I still have my original brake pads in good shape after over 160,000 miles on my Toyota Corolla. Manual transmission is a different way of driving from automatic transmission and I have driven with both types of transmissions, but I find that with less braking needed through down shifting that the brakes and the tires last longer. The fuel economy is very good especially on the open roads. With a four cylinder engine, a manual transmission gives the driver that extra power needed for hills by using the proper gear. Manual transmission requires the driver to pay more attention to his driving whereas driving is no effortless with automatic transmission that fatigue sets in on longer drives. I know that eventually within the next ten years or so cars will no longer be sold with manual transmissions as an option.

l do the same & since l use "Read the Road" (the term the cop that taught me used) l slow down earlier than most since l work out what most drivers are doing & using the gearbox l don't often use the brakes (l can drive on known roads without ever needing to use my brakes from start to parking in my garage, a skill l still practise) I have been yield at by cars pulling up beside me to use my brakes saying they almost hit me as they didn't know l was slowing down. Why? if they were paying attention to the road & driving to the traffic flow they should have noticed me slowing down before almost rear ending me. l also drive a 5 speed Toyota Corolla but with just under 140,000 kms on it (about 83,000 miles) :)
