Following your recommendation on worm farming I now have 6,000-7,000 worms working away. I have harvested castings a couple of times and used them to plant six tomato plants. I checked today and found about forty tomatoes on the plants. Worms are good to have, so I give them some dry molasses once a week, when I hear them crying for more.

Thanks for talking about alpaca manure!! I raise alpacas so have a large quantity of alpaca manure. It's great stuff. A few years ago, I filled my new raised beds with nothing but composted alpaca manure because I was too cheap to buy soil and peat moss to mix in with it and grew my veggies directly in it. The veggies took right off and took over my yard. My friends and family couldn't believe the growth and productivity! After the initial filling of the beds, I've been top dressing the beds with the composted alpaca manure every year. A shovelful of uncomposted alpaca manure right from their backsides to put under shrubs and trees that aren't food crops also works like a charm for them too.

Another question to ask when sourcing manure: Are the animals on any medications? Livestock deworming medications can pass into manure and have negative effects on the worms in your garden.

Sheep, goat and rabbit, the 3 main ones you can use straight away in the garden. Little lower in nutients. But you don't have to wait for the aging process. Tho our local soil place is now aging other manures so we can buy in bulk already aged.

Our rabbit feed is alfalfa based. Every spring we have a lot of it to shovel. I make hills for our winter squash, about 20 foot long a couple of weeks before planting. That way the spring rain helps to wash out some of the acid from the urine Rabbit urine does have calcium crystals in it. Rabbit manure is a cold manure that won't burn plants. It doesn't ferment. Your video was a great lesson for gardeners wanting to use manure. Take care!

Great video, as always, Scott! I'm fortunate that I have 3 rabbits, and they poop A LOT! 😊 I always have plenty of rabbit 'Cocoa Puffs', as my kids call them! I up-pot my seedlings with a good handful of them, and don't have to worry at all about burning those tender little guys! Actually, my plants just seem to thrive when I use it! I use other ammendments as well, but I certainly encourage anyone who can secure a supply of rabbit poo to feel safe in using it!

First time watching; I do miss what said even w/captions due to hearing impairment. A few years ago I just bought this and that cause it all looked good. Huge bags of soil conditioner, steer & chicken manure, peat moss spangnum moss….opened all the bags and dumped them all over the lawn (the area was the size of a standard bedroom) raked it all evenly and I thought it looked pretty. I then threw a big bag of grass seed and fertilizer over the top of that. Almost 4 years later and I have tiny patches of grass that looks like green cheetah spots. I have tried to correct it to no avail. I am pulling grass out of the flower beds all the time…did great were I didn’t want it. So I got 2 bags of steer manure about 6 weeks ago; I don’t have a vegetable garden but I have flower beds and cherry, apple and a couple nut trees that I’m not sure what type they are but the birds, raccoons and squirrels get the cherry and nuts before I do. Sorry I wrote a book but I don’t know where/how to put the steer manure and I also have a huge bag of peat moss…would you mix the two? I have rocky clay soil. I only plan to use as much manure as I need. Big piles that sit and leach can pose problems. For small piles that are mixed into compost or garden beds quickly become part of the soil, are used by soil microbes, and pose very little chance of runoff.

Almost all cattle, sheep, horse and hog farmers will let you come shovel up all you want from the feeding areas after winter. It really piles up around feeders and cause the farmer grief. The farmer may look at you funny when you first ask but after that will watch for you or even call you. I know this because before i was a gardener i gave away my barn cleanings every spring. Now It all goes to the garden right on top of the wood chips. A few rains and a summer of sun and it goes right down to the soil. Each time I clean the barn i put down two inches of wood shavings and a foot of straw. Then the sheep do the rest. Repeat.

Gardener Scott, I just bought a bag of composted chicken manure with the intent to add it to my raised beds now (end of January) and cover it with compost then let it sit til mid March when I plant my peas. My extension office said that was too early and the nutrients would leach out. I'm not sure how that is different than applying manure in the fall and letting it sit til spring. My thought was to improve the soil which in turn will benefit the plants.. My beds have rarely been amended so the soil needs some help. Is my thinking correct or should I wait until I'm ready to sow the peas?
@GardenerScott
@GardenerScott Год назад
I think improving the soil earlier is better. Left as a pile of compost, some nutrients will leach out when exposed to rain, but when mixed into the soil it becomes food for microbes and those microbes transfer the nutrients into the soil. I agree with you. That process takes time so amending when you are ready to sow does little to provide the nutrients the plants need.

@@GardenerScott Thanks for confirming. I was in a rush and just finished putting my compost on so now I'll pull it back and put on the chicken manure. One other question - my compost is only 1/2 finished and fairly mucky due to more greens than browns and a lack of attention on my part but it's full of worms and smells great. Should I cover my bed with plastic to keep the worms warm and help the compost finish? Now that I have more time and access to the internet I'm trying to catch up on the finer points of gardening.

A new standard of 170 degrees sustained is needed to kill Toxoplasmosis. There is no real guidance on timing & turnigs since composting cat poop is never advised.

Can I used cow dung as a manure
@GardenerScott
@GardenerScott Год назад
Sure. If the cows use salt licks the manure could introduce excess salt to the garden, but the manure can be a good amendment.

I would never even consider actually this but know you...if someone was vegan...could you?
@GardenerScott
