I'm in Houston. In most areas that have a lot of poverty and street hustling for limited resources you get situations like what 50 Cent experienced. It's not just a hood thing, if you know anyone that's poor, they probably will be able to tell you similar stories.
However, there are no equal friends, most people are arrested or killed, so 50 cents floated to their fame, told things that did not live or survived the shooting, and tell, their criminal style is unique.
50 Cent's situation was for real. He was a hustler before he became known as a rapper. But the reports say he was targeted and shot 9 times (once in the mouth, which contributes to the way he raps/speaks) because of a song he made in which he reveals a little too much about a drug/gang kingpin from the area.
The video was dramatized, but the story was very real. He used to be a drug dealer and was shot 9 times for real, and lived to tell the tale. He was rapping before hand but him surviving the shooting definitely helped catapult him. His debut album ended up going Diamond

Basically he came up under a guy who had control of the drug market in queens ny, the guy started putting money into the music business and made a label “Murder Inc” lead by a rapper “Ja Rule” 50 wanted to get from under the guy and started rapping because he didnt like the way the guy was moving. Hommo(close friend of Mike Tyson ‘fun fact’) shot 50 in front of his grandmas house. 50 recovered but no one including diddy would sign him because they were scared until Eminem/Dr Dre came along with Aftermath records and made this legend an icon

As someone who grew up in the ghettos of Indianapolis (a relatively small city by comparison to NY), this is absolutely how it is. There are always power struggles going on in the hood. When people are living 1 bad day away from having their lights shut off, their kids starving, they do desperate things. Drug dealers get a lot of heat from the public, but most didn't start out with bad intentions. They just didn't want to see their families crumble and were out of other options. 50 Cent is one of the high profile glimpses into that life. He was one of the lucky ones that survived. He got hit by a rival who was trying to make a statement, survived, and I have no doubt he had a hand in the payback that came later.

I am from Detroit born and raised and people honestly exaggerate the crime here most of the incidents that happen these days are not random and are almost always drug related if you stay away from that shit nothing bad will happen to you if you use some common sense hell if anything Dearborn has seen a major increase in crime these past couple of years compared to Detroit.

Drive by just happened on the east side of fort Worth. Two three year old kids shot and two young aldults. A day later an up and coming rapper from South dallas got shot eight times in Lewisville tx.
I’m from Harlem NY. I kid you not in the summer time there’s at least 4 shootouts on my block every year and it’s crazy cause you don’t hear about it on the news or nothin. Fights, shootouts, drugs is so common out here that it’s just a regular thing .

If you're ever curious what particular lyrics mean, there's a good website called Genius that has annotated lyrics. It's a pretty good source on the background for some of the references. His description of what happened is basically a true story of what happened to him in Queens. He got shot up and the guys that did it ended up dead. Gang, rap and drugs all go together in the hood, especially at the time period we're talking. Look into BMF for more info, that was basically a drug cartel that invested in music and had a stable of popular rappers.
