This is why it's so important for judges to correctly call edges. If the judges consistently call out a skater's incorrect or flat edges, they'll have motivation to fix their technique. What Mao accomplished is truly inspiring.

But sadly they did not do that to their "favourite" skater

She changed coache after the Vancouver Olympics and started all her jumps over from scratch. Then she had a series of missed jumps and falls, and even at the Sochi Olympics, the Lutz jump was inside. (I saw this and was convinced that Lutz would never be fixed again. Because she's been using the wrong Lutz for about 10 years now.) But after the rest, her lutz jumps went flat, and in her last game, she fell completely to the outside. She didn't say anything about it, and a lot of people, myself included, only saw the 3A's and didn't notice Lutz. She persevered for the entire six years of her life, trying to improve Lutz, which I thought was impossible. She never gave up.And she won herself over. Every time I remember this, it makes me cry more than the free program in Sochi. I can't help but respect her.!!! Thanks for the upload! Video that everyone in the world who knows Mao Asada should watch!!!

Now we already fooling around with the way people obsessed on her jumps for so long that I find it less than fair. There are other figure skaters who have trouble with their jumps as well, and they haven’t fixed their jumps. This is all about Mao performing to the best of her ability and it’s not right for uninformed critics to make an issue with her lutz as these things were unintentional and you could see she’s been practicing tirelessly on it. Give Mao a break because too many bullies were seen trying to impede her progress by intimidating her. It’s not fair to poor Mao!

I love every her jumps even when she falls or downgrade or whatever and before 2008 her lutz was considered as ok under rules back then. She’s been the hardest athlete and the most beautiful artist. Adore her

Your music choices bring tears to my eyes, I miss the good old days. Unfortunately, we didn't get a slow motion on that jump (the 2016 JPN Nats) which in my opinion they should have put that in slow motion because it was a bid deal. Mao worked hard to fix her Lz edges because judges called them in competitions. This is why unbiased and correct judging is important; to push the sport and its athletes towards the right direction. Nowadays many favorite skaters are not getting called for their flat and flutz because of FS politicking. Bring back honest judging!

Didn't mean to spreading hate to anyone. But at least the judges still call her edges so in Yuna-Mao era, there's still fair judge. She always work hard for the next fight, over and over! That why I respect her soooooo much! I miss her performances too. I even still watch her programs right now (I in love wth her artistry when I was 10 in Vancouver 2010!), I never get bored with her programs (including Yuna's). So she aimed her goal, being a memorable skater. Still, at least we can see her smile until right now~. Glad she looks so happy right now. I hope her dream that she said want to build an ice rink will come true!

Let me explain, why Mao Asada was making flutz almost all of her career in figure skating. ‘Cause of Mao’s over curved flip(btw as well as Zhenya Medvedeva’s), she was not able to do lutz with outside edge. She used mule kick to make flip and lutz. At NHK Trophy 2008, Mao tried to do not have mule kick, and wrong edge. the kick is less, and lutz is at least flatter, than it was. Textbook flip should be 5 degrees inside edge, so skater also can do good lutz. Mao’s and Zhenya’s flips are over curved and with very deep inside edge. It is not bad, ‘cause there is no rule in ISU about over curving. But lutz will be with a wrong edge.

Zhenya has had troubles with lz all the season, she was clearly trying to fix the take off
@figureskatingcow4636
@figureskatingcow4636 4 года назад
Yeah exactly. Mao could not hold her outside edge because she mule kicked so high, and by the time her leg came back down, she had switched to the inside edge. If she picks in earlier, she could have had a flatter edge which she did in 2008. Thanks for your comment!

This video is a little old so you might not see this but I really like your videos, there are a lot of videos on yt talking about the technical side of fs but a lot of them are kinda rude, Idk if it’s because I’m sensitive but some words choices just seem disrespectful to me. But the way you make your videos talking abt the wrong and right techniques it’s really good. The figure skating community is just too toxic for me so I appreciate seeing someone positive like this. Btw I love how mao really tried to change her jump, it’s hard to change something you’ve been doing for your whole life, I really respect her for what she went through

Hi! Thanks for the comment, I do agree that a lot of the FS community can be so polarized especially on Instagram and Twitter, and some channels like Koola King can come off as biased and rude 😅 I'm happy that you enjoyed this video! And yeah I'm really proud of Mao as well, I'm so proud of her for getting a clean lutz in before her retirement. I miss her so much.

i think her lutz at the 2015 cup of china sp was flat edge, despite the (e) call by the tech panel
@figureskatingcow4636
@figureskatingcow4636 4 года назад
It was definitely close. She might have quickly switched from flat to inside right before she picked in though, so I think the 'e' call was fair there.
