The best part to me wasn’t just the voice acting. It’s Maomao noticing Jinshi still there. Nor does he stop her the whole time. He also uses the same words she had before finally allowed to do the job she was ordered to do.

MaoMao clearly learned a lot from that Old Brothel Madam cause she was definitely channeling some Old Hag energy with that slap and lecture!

As a medicine student I understand the feeling of see our patients or their family doing the things we ask not to do, she is a totally everyday mood 😢

Notice Maomao's expression at 2:02 when the lady-in-waiting starts crying. Before this she was furious, angrily calling the lady out for her idiocy (and for good reason). But when the lady stats sobbing Maomao's face softens and her tone is less critical though still stern. This confirms for Maomao and for us that the lady-in-waiting didn't do what she did out of malice-she just thought she was doing what was right. Knowing how women historically put beauty above their health, the lady-in-waiting was probably taught to be this way, which makes the whole situation more tragic. ...but the slap was still deserved 👍

For those curious on what the white powder is, it's lead powder makeup. Originally made during the 18th century, during a fashion craze, where being pale was seen as beautiful or majestic. However most people didn't know lead was poisonous at this time but that's why it was banned after the information was discovered

Maomao's line "there are no thoughts in your head. You just think you know everything" goes so hard bc shes 100% right. If she really cared about her lady she wouldn't have risked it when hearing the powder is poisonous even if the statement came from someone below her. Its her own ego that she prioritized not her lady

I’ll preface by saying I’ve not watched this show or read it’s source material if it has. The amount of detail in the character acting is just outstanding in so many degrees. It’s not just the animation or the voice acting, it’s the direction of this sequence that is making this as good as it is. It’s the direction and storyboards of this clip. I don’t even know who these people are and what are their stories, but I felt the fury in the girl and then the sheer regret in the makeup lady. See you in 3 hours time to go binge Edit: yeah it was way too good, even better than I was expecting lol

There are two things I love this part of the show: One: Maomao has an inner dark side in her where it shows how serious she was when people don't listen to her. Plus, she gave straight up facts of the knowledge she knows behind the powder that the other ladies didn't. The scary face and tone gives me dead vibes like she has the blood of Tanya Two: The voice actor (Aoi Yuki) who voices Maomao did a excellent job for this part. I'm very happy she got to play this show. I hope she gets to play other future shows. P.S That slap thou was dopping awesome. It literally felt real I jump from that lol 💥💥💥💥💥💥💥💥💥💥💥💥

I loved how fast she went from a bulldog to a scared puppy in a second. It shows how much she cared to teach the idiots a lesson without taking into consideration who's in the room.

Not sure how well the title works: Maomao's anger is so frightening because she seems like she's actually still restraining it, and this is merely a hint of it. She's *not* losing it, she's composed, thinking clearly, and *still* laying out a physical AND rhetorical beatdown.

What I find great is that this lady in waiting that she scheduled later apologized to Maomao. The rather short storylines are expanded in the anime.

THIS SCENE MADE ME LOVE MAOMAO EVEN MORE! She's trying to do her job, yet all the ladies there acting like they know better! Don't mess with Maomao!! SLAY MAOMAO! SLAY!!

I am happy we get to see the duality of maomao character, for there's maomao the palace maiden, who will just go with the flow and there's Maomao that was raised in a brothel, who knows when to take action because she refuses to be dragged around by others stupidity.

Maomao letting people have it puts a smile on my face. She has my vote for Best Girl of the Year.

after rewatching this I realized Maomao is really strong for being able to drag that woman across the room to the table by the hair, being at best half to 2/3rds the size of the woman

It's been a while since I've seen a good slap, and then she just dragged her by the hair Maomao was having none of it. 🤣

Consort Lihua really must have a forgiving side to her considering the lady-in-waiting had been using a banned material that was poisonous, regardless of ignorance. I was a little surprised she got off so lightly given the time period, coming out of it unharmed and managing to keep her position. I was half expecting her to get demoted to the maid staff at the least. Historically women like her had gotten far worse punishments for far less.

Mao Mao has all the lovable characteristics of a koneko chan- smart but honest, independent but loyal, cool yet cuddly. Love how she bares her claws at her idiot detractors here. Also, the cutest and most hysterical moments are between her and Jinshi, the handsome administrator, shown at the end; in other examples of their awkward relationship, Mao Mao literally hisses like a cat when he tries to kabedon her 😱🐱

I just how realistic Maomao's dark and serious side is. In most of the anime series characters snap suddenly and scare everyone. But Maomao gets serious not bcuz she is cool and Wednesday bcuz the situation is really serious and someone needs to take the action and warn people against ignorance.

Dang Moamao's is so frightening to that woman first slapping her down to the floor, pulling her hair, and that face she made was scary 😱

Notice that Jinshi could have stopped it at any time, but chose to let the beatdown proceed.

I seriously got so shocked at this scene but I was still cheering on Maomao to continue make the ladies understand their error. Lately in non-action anime violence is overused to make the character badass in non-critical moments, but I like how it was used here in this specific context. This anime is so well balanced, can't wait for the next episodes!

I love how at 2:33 she is slowly moving away. Really nice animation!

The cinematography elevated this scene. When MaoMao turns her back to us, the audiance, we don't see her face as she walks slowly to the ladies-in-waiting yet you can feel the her silent anger.

Love how they had the camera follow Mao Mao but also love that the animators didn't use that tired character acting by having her shoulders shake as her anger builds, because no one does that in reality. Pure silent rage from her and I love it!

This scene was fantastic. Showed Maomao had some hella strong backbone in as dark a way as possible. Also, even though ive seen the whole anime before, this time i know how Maomao felt, because i didnt remember Jinshi was also in the room (he got he in finally, but i just didnt recall till the end).

One of my absolute favorite scenes. I already liked Maomao before this, but this scene cemented her as one of my favorite anime characters So perfectly executed

The Lady in waiting got off easy compared to the enouch who was tasked to remove the powder away from that house. I hope both learned their lesson.

This scene is what totally elevated this show for me to truly great, and man has it continued to deliver.

I jus t love to rewatch this scene, the slap wasn't even that hard when you realize the psycological damage she just gave that woman, broke her pride, call her stupid and bathed her on the poison so she would know what it was

I've read up to volume 3 in the light novel and this specific scene is definitely one of my favorites. So, to see it in the anime was a real treat. It's just somehow even more satisfying to watch than it was to read.

You’re talking about the slap, but she gave the coldest line right after this, “You’ll be as beautiful as [her] pale bloodless skin, sunken in eyes, and a body that can’t even eat.” Then when she tried to justify it by saying that she might’ve been happy with it, she hit her with the force look and spoke out, “Who would be happy with using the product that killed her son!?”

A few episodes later, isnt this same handmaiden one of the only ones who doesnt bully and also fear MaoMao at the garden party? Or am I mistaken? I like the thought that after realising that MaoMao was here to do a job and that they were actively harming her efforts, this handmaiden in particular might have formed a more respectful opinion of MaoMao (even if she probably is still lowkey scared of our girl)

Mao Mao is the best character of the season. She is literally in my TOP 3 since I read the Novel years ago.

Finished watching the whole thing a few night ago, and I have never loved a female MC so much since Haruhi from OHSHC. I could feel her barely contained anger from the other side of the screen.

The sad thing, though is this is by no means a fictitious type of event I guess you could say. Unfortunately, several makeups, and other substances that were used by concubines or other individuals actually did have a very very detrimental effect. I don’t remember exactly, but I believe the face powder is leased with a form of lead. Which you know gives it that bright white color. And wow, I can understand why the ladies and waiting would not know about this because well things like lead poisoning outside of very specific fields of study, wasn’t really that well known. In fact , there were times where it was actually believed that drinking from a lead lined vessel, was actually beneficial to your health. Not only that, but it apparently part of a small amount of flavor into your drink.

Maomao just dominated the handmaiden like an absolute boss.

I saw two quick clips of this show before, and thought I'd give it a try. My god is this REALLY good. I thought it would be a somewhat cute thing, i hadn't seen THIS scene but no, its got cute but the whole PALACE INTRIQUE thing adds this whole other dimension that elevates this show. I wish id discovered it at the end so i could binge watch it because after watching all 7 episodes, having to wait SUCKS! Highly recommended!

Ohhh I did not know this got animated! The voice actor is great. She sounds even more authoritative during this scene than I imagined which is great.

this anime is a one of a kind, a masterpiece in character building and story telling. me, who prefers donghua and other magical stuff, loves this anime and i wait every week for the next episode, even the credit song gets my interest, in sum, it reminds me of LAIN back in the days
