I think Maomao and Frieren are the best fmc this season. Also, both shows are great.

Note about the Harem - The Harem structure in China is very similar to the Harem structure that was common in countries within the Middle East at one point. One woman was considered the true wife of the ruler while he was allowed to take in multiple wives as political pawns and "gifts" given by foreign royal families in order to establish a bloodline connection with the current ruler. However it was up to the ruler which one of his wives he had children with and some of them he never had children with at all. They would be considered his wife in name alone and sometimes that was enough for the families of those wives. But the women that did have children with the ruler would have more privileges than others.

Maomao x Jinshi moments are COMEDY GOLD

Did not expect yall to watch this but happily surprised, this show has been a banger so far.

MaoMao is my favorite detective who’s not a detective. She’s so deadpan and single-minded. Been reading it since the web novel so I’m interested in seeing the light novel changes

Apothecary Diaries is definitely a contender for surprise of the season, I've enjoyed every episode so far

Just to give a perspective of how much these 2 LOVE the show, on Patreon we initially got just ep1 as per the schedule on the upload day, but the next time it's uploaded Roshi went on and dropped the entirety of 2-7 (because they started late) ON THE SAME DAY. They weren't recorded on the same day of course based on their shirts but you get the idea 😂

All I know about this show is that Maomao is a great character and that she is played by the amazing Aoi Yuuki😊

Maomao's unironically one of the most fun characters to watch I've seen in a good while... In only one episode too it's like "Oh, this one's built different."

So, this happened in history a lot. Not just the Japanese and Chinese, but with high class ladies in Europe. One of the most famous is Queen Elizabeth (the queen of England that had the red hair and pale face). The cause is they use to mix lead and sometimes mercury into makeup. Since it messes with the blood flow, it makes the skin ghostly white, but slowly poisons the user. The worst part is that it damages the skin, so you have to use more to cover it up. And, it does lead to death or makes the body weak enough that something else kills you off.

Yes sir , one of the best girl of the season is here, maomao is such an interesting character , love her so much

Someone described this show as a female pseudo-ancient China House MD lol I am so glad you guys are watching it, this is a great medical mystery/detective show and MaoMao is a nicely written, quirky and smart character.

"Mao" means cat in Chinese. Using the same word twice imparts a sense of cute adorableness to it. Kinda like dog --> doggie, pig --> piggie, or cat --> kitty/kittie. So were I to translate Maomao's name into English, I would call her Kittie to convey that affection about her name. On poisonous whitening powder, commoners would be using grounded rice to whiten their skin. It's not very effective but it's safe to use. Those who are well off had access to "high quality whitening powder" which can give you that pale skin look, but is usually lead-based and thus deadly poisonous.

The moment the manager and concubine figured out what Maomao could do, they weren’t going to just let her go. They’d get rid of the kidnappers that brought her in (especially since it means they won’t have to pay them anymore), but they’re not just going to let a prize like her get away. A highly skilled apothecary is worth three times their weight in gold in that day and age, and Jinshin, I think his name is, is way too intelligent to not know Maomao’s value.

Yea Maomao... this one of the good anime this season. A reaction to Dark Gathering would be great from this crew... its best supernatural horror anime I've seen with funny comedy. It just becomes more intense as new eps come out

Glad you guys are reacting to this one! It's the one I was looking forward to most from this season since I'm a huge fan of the original WN! It's a really good adaptation too, my only complaint being that the director for Frieren is better (probably one of the best new-ish directors, IMO) and since I'm super biased for Kusuriya I wish he had worked on this one as well. Hope you guys enjoy this one, it's great!

It’s really common way back in the day in Chinese dynasties for an emperor to have so many concubines. I believe, if I’m not mistaken, there are so many because either they caught the emperor’s eye, given to the emperor via politically/to save face, to satisfy the emperor’s pleasures or to better the chances in giving birth to a son (or daughter to then be wed off to give birth to a son) to be the next heir to the throne

Characters are amazing, things are both intriguing and hilarious. I'm caught up to last Saturdays ep. The reason the babies were the ones showing the biggest symptoms was because they don't have a robust immune system yet and they are smaller so less is needed to harm them. Every one is affected to some extent. The Reason Maomao noticed it was because she saw the effects on The other Consort's face.

14:56 no sheera's misunderstanding what a lady in waiting is, basically to get to birth a potential heir for the emperor you just have to be a Concubine and there can be any number of concubines(for instance it was said there's hundreds in the rear palace), the only requirement is the emperor likes the girl A lady in waiting isn't a Concubine but more like a maid or servant, she literally does her title, she WAITS on her lady and does whatever task her lady happens to need, this can politically be a very good position for a servant as this gives you one main master instead of serving everyone and you usually get the ear of a very influential woman if you're good at you're job This of course means you're seen as above the other servants in status and that can usually foster a lot of problems and troubles that a normal servant doesn't have to deal with Basically moamoa isn't in a position to be a Concubine and just got a promotion to better servant, if the emperor sees her and thinks she's cute enough he'd just say "she's a concubine now" and that's that, there isn't a succession line for concubines Although the child of a concubine is a heir with their place in the succession of the royal throne having a tone of factors like how much the emperor likes the child/mother, notable feats or accomplishments, does the emperor have a wife and age plus tons of other stuff

15:05 Being a "lady-in-waiting" does not mean you are next on deck for the Bedchamber. It is basically a term for a female Butler. The job is to wait on the Concubine. Like wait-staff (Waiter/Waitress). The only risk is being in closer proximity and standing out as attractive, might get you picked. Maomao tryi g to live that MOB character life and stay under the radar. Do her Indentured Servitude time and get out after her 2 years are up. (The Employment Placement agency here is aggressive, because they get a comission cut of the "employee" provided for the full term of the contract.)

Great show! Absolutely the one I look forward to the most this season! Maomao is just great. Also, someone probably pointed it out already, but Maomao is an adult. Well, 17 at the start of the anime. And Jinshi (purple hair dude) isn't that old. Though there are like, 3-4 versions of this story in LN and manga forms, and the exact ages shift from one or two years between versions.

So stoked for you all to be watching this series! Maomao's a treasure! So a lady-in-waiting would NOT be of interest to the Emperor. The concubines are actually nobility from other regions IIRC. So only they have the potential to produce heirs for the Emperor's lineage. Ladies-in-waiting are merely attendants to the Concubines.
