I liked the sound of the PM500 over the C414. The C414 was picking up some high frequency harshness I would have had trouble EQing out. I used to use a 90s C414BULS for vocals and had the same issue. I switched to the AKG SolidTube and got the sound I wanted. I believe the SolidTube is also electret, not a true condenser. You can hear examples of both on my RU-vid channel "Frank Coffey Songs". Almost all of the 60 songs there used those AKG mics. Today I would use the PM500 and be happy with it.
thanks for watching. The PM500, given how in expensive it is really is quite astounding. We have a BULS in the studio here and find it to be a little duller than the 414XL2, but thats not saying much. The XL2 is a BRIGHT mic.
