Calgary, Regina, and many other places here used to be served by a seperate railway that went all across Canada in near parallel to the one on the map. They converged on Winnipeg and then split off again to the west and to the east of Winnipeg. One or both of them went through Sudbury to Ottawa, and farther east, but I don't know exactly where. I'm very sure that at least one went from Ottawa to Montreal, then Quebec City, and on to Halifax, but I only went as far east as Ottawa. One was the Canadian National Railway or CN, and the other was Canadian Pacific or CP. Although I used both, and I remember them well, I forget which was which. The fact they crossed in Winnipeg makes it even harder to remember which was which. Which was the historic first railway where they drove the last spike and united Canada? I'll have to read again Pierre Burton's great book, The Last Spike, to refresh my memories. CN and CP become the same in your mind when you're thinking of 50 years ago or more. It's interesting that a country half the size of today's Canada supported both transCanada railways, 5 days a week, and the Greyhound buses! I remember it! The only remaining train is now only 2 times a week, and Greyhounds stopped running completely years ago. I would far rather take a train than any other mode of travel. To me the plane and Greyhound are both nightmares. It would help if the airport wasn't a full days drive away. Winnipeg's airport was 10 minutes from home when I lived there. Canadian governments, when they have Conservative majorities, sell off parts of Canada as fast as their American buddies can gather at the pig trough! So just like almost every other large company in Canada, VIA Rail is an American company. They got all the passenger cars, and most of the other assets of both CN and CP, and as is the custom, billions of dollars in cash! I think the rails and land they sit on are now rented by VIA Rail, but I could be wrong. There is freight still moved on those tracks too. I see cars marked CN and CP, but I don't know who owns them. Canadians seem to dislike the Conservatives, and rightly so, but they seem not to care that the whole country has been hollowed out by them, and is now owned by the batshit crazy Republicans in the US. Canadians better wake up, before there's absolutely nothing left! I would just love to describe the damage the Americans have done to our retail sector and our cities, but people who are too stupid to see it for themselves won't be convinced anyway. So I'll save myself the effort.

I'm especially curious about the fact Mexico doesn't have any US military bases. Thinking about it, it's weirder that only 1 country in Latinamerica has at least one. With all the American interventionism over the last century in the region, I'd thought they'd managed to place a few.

I didn't think about it much when making this map beyond it not looking as full as I thought. But you are right, it is pretty empty, especially considering the expansion the Chinese military has been making with African and South American nations.
