Even though this was a longer video, it felt super short! I believe that’s because you were constantly talking to us, giving us information and I always appreciate that👍🏼
I remember having an old-fashioned at a place close to my office where the bartender used a table-spoon of maple syrup instead of sugar, and added 1 oz of cold brewed coffee to 2 oz of bourbon. It was absolutely delicious; the coffee and syrup were smooth and smoky, perfectly complimenting the alcohol.
Okay, this drink sparked my curiosity instantly. I had my first (traditional)Old Fashioned about a year ago and really enjoyed it. I’ve yet to find another that I enjoy. Being a HUGE rum enthusiast, this version seemed to have promise. So, I went to my favorite local liquor store and picked up a bottle of 15yo El Dorado (excellent rum!), some aromatic bitters and a small bottle if pure maple syrup. I followed your recipe exactly, but went with your alternative suggestion of mixing/stirring in one glass. OMG! This drink is amazing!! The sweetness from the maple perfectly balances the husky flavors from the rum. Love it! Steve, thanks for all you do...I am a true fan of your channel, your great presentation and I can’t help but smile every time you do when shaking the drinks...🤷♂️😎🥃
Just made this tonight. Chose it for my first time making cocktails as I love maple syrup and it's easy and doesn't require many ingredients. Used plantation original dark and I absolutely love this drink.
I discovered that it has a considerable amount of added sugar hence why it’s so smooth.. still delicious though just maybe not for some of the super serious rum aficionados!
Looks good! As I've mentioned before, I'm a huge fan of spiced rum and it's worth repeating how good it is in a cup of coffee with honey and cream. Yum!
You are helping improve my confidence to try this drink you make it differently than my local bartender did. I have yet to try it again since but customers are always ordering it. maple syrup in a drink makes me hesitant. thank you for posting the recipe I will be brave and try it. I will comment my experience.
Thank you so much! I tried your recipe with Don Papa rum. It was the best thing i‘ve ever had! I don‘t know if you can get it at your location, but if you can, i would highly reccomend to try out Don Papa. It is probably the best rum i‘ve ever had.
I made this with all the ingredients seen here except used Crown's Bourbon Barrel Aged Maple syrup and it was OH MY GOD delicious, made the mistake and gave my wife a sip, she had three more that same night.
Oh you know I'm gonna be all over this!!. I'll have to see if I can get my hands on this rum. Thanks for the recommendation. On a side note, I miss your smile when you do the shake 😞
Old Fashions have so many variations. I live in Minnesota and here there are two ways to make it. Yes I have made many brandy old fashions in my time as a bartender though. One of my favorites though has equal parts Hennesey and Deserono. Spelling very wrong Im sure. Splash of cherry juice instead of bitters and there you go. It is quite good.
Just bought a bottle of El Dorado 12 year.. gonna try this cocktail soon for sure! *Edit : great cocktail to showcase the El Dorado 12 year! It's also very good to enjoy neat.
When it comes to maple Syrups either going for a Vermont or Canadian Maple Syrups is the best option. I'm sure there are others, but those two places are the most reliable places for the stuff.
Highly recommend a Latin Quarter from Death & Co. if you like this. It's sort of their rum Sazerac, and while they use Ron Zacapa 23 I believe, I have made it with the El Dorado 12 and love it.
Syrupy, totally out-maples all the competition, including Woodford Reserve Double-Oaked, treeacle edition. Very nice jigger too. Mine has only 40 and 20 ml, measuring fluid ounces and half ounces is sometimes challenging. On a more serious note - this rum has 42g/l of added sugar. If you want to try unsweetened Demerara rums, try Wood's Navy, Skipper, Lemon Hart, independent bottlings like KillDevil or Secret Treasures, Velier, etc.
40/20mL jigger is an usually spec - does it also have inner markings? Yer I was reading about sugar content... I guess that what makes it so smooth - added sugar..
Would love to see a video on bitters and how they alter drinks... I have about five different bitters but always end up with Angostura :D Gonna go buy a bottle of this El Dorado tomorrow, you should be on commission lol
Maple sap is running here in our backyard Steve - boiling it down every day for the next 2-3 weeks. Would you like some? I could send you a bottle of our own homemade backyard maple syrup. **Of course just realised that this video is from 3 years ago... but the offer still stands.
I did not like the Old Fashioned made with Maker's Mark bourbon a while back, but I will most certainly give this version a try since I have the El Dorado 12 in my bar cabinet. Thanks for the hint!
Every time I hear someone wanting an order of an old fashioned drink, I always think of that movie it’s a, “Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World” when they’re in the plane making an old fashioned lol 😂
I’ve been trying to get the stirring right with a bar spoon but always seem to get stuck with the ice in the way. Is there a technique on how to handle the spoon to mix fast?
In Turkey we don't have most rums, tequilas, liquers and maple syrups.... We do have cointreau but it's like 200 ml. RIP bartenders of Turkey. P.S- Half of all alcohols is Rakjia, such as Yeni Rakısı, Tekirdağ and İsmir.
There's a lot of sugar added to El Dorado, it's over priced and honestly there's a lot of really good rums out there that don't sell you a sleazy product. I believe there's something like 40g added which makes it about 1/2 as sweet as soda. And of course, that's not advertised on the bottle. People should at least know what they're buying.
Yeah I’ve been reading about sugared rums as I’m distilling rum myself too.. I think it’s crucial to label it as such hey. Does explain why it’s so smooth though!
