Maple Syrup Time/Repurposing An Old Chopper Box

Earlier than normal, but the sap is flowing at Trinity Dairy. Jennifer and the kids put in 22 taps this year. This is just our second year making maple syrup, but we have all been bitten by the maple bug. Follow along as we cook the sap into the golden syrup. Alan was recently offered a couple of Gehl chopper boxes to use for whatever as they were no longer usable as chopper boxes anymore. We decided to try and use one as a place to cook the sap in. The owner did want the running gear back, so the Case 830 and Gehl Skid Steer got put to work taking the box off the running gear and into place. The box will be very appreciated as the temps took a dramatic drop that night and the wind picked up.

Trinity Dairy was established in 2006, in Minnesota. Alan and Jennifer farm with their 5 children; Jessica, Justin, Jordan, Joshua, and Jason. We milk a mix of 33 Jersey, Holstein, Brown Swiss, Guernsey, and Ayrshire cattle. We also enjoy sharing our family's love of Draft Horses and using them for logging and other farm work. Dairy Farming in Minnesota can be challenging, but it's a lifestyle we really enjoy. Subscribe today to watch our small family dairy farm and family grow while continuing to thank our Lord for the blessings we've been given.

We were wondering if we shouldn't fill the pans as full and add more often, but we weren't sure what to do! Thanks for commenting.

A little bit of advice from an old-timer: Enjoy every minute of time spent with your wonderful children, they grow up way too fast and move on with their own lives. I recently read that, as parents, by the time a child is 18 you will have spent 95% of the time you will have with them. Alan, you are so correct about Gehl boxes. Good design, but the under carriage always rots out. We have a 970 just like this one that let go last year. Also, the unloading beaters tend to rot out and they are now close to $500 apiece.

If you use RO filters you will remove a lot of the extra water so you won't have to cook it as long.

Don't if you know but you can put two or three taps in a 12-14 inch trees. If you want more syrup.
@br927
@br927 7 месяцев назад
To see if it's thick enough, dip a tablespoon in and take some out, hold it up and dump the syrup off the spoon, if it just runs off, cook it more, you want it to kind of just come to the end of the spoon and the drops should stick, then break off! That's how you do it without a thermometer or a hydrometer.

@trinitydairy

Any type of Maple works. Certain maples have a higher sugar content in the sap. You can even tap boxelder trees as they are in the Maple family.
