Maple Tree Care: The perfect time to repot
When to repot your Japanese maple is a very important decision. Each Acer cultivar is different, pots can be glazed or unglazed and repotting at the start of the growing season is different too! Growth rates and positioning play a part too. In this video I explain how to assess each tree and decide wether to leave alone, pot up, down or into the same sized ceramic pot.
Ideal for beginners or more experienced Japanese Maple growers, in these videos I will show what practical steps I take to keep my Acer trees healthy during a year of gardening!
I hope you will follow me in my adventures with these wonderful trees
This video will help you grow better trees and for those with more experience, who want to improve the autumn colour, health and general quality of their Maples. Colour can also be improved all year by giving trees the right amount of sun.

The substrate is also very important for the pot size. A substrate that consists of organic material only will hold much more water compared to a substrate containing a high percentage of perlite, clay pellets, pumice, etcetera. I believe most plants are happier in larger pots with a subtrate that holds less water where the roots are not confined to wet little rootball. It's not the water that kills plants, it's the lack of air reaching the roots.

I agree the substrate is important, however with Acers it’s a balancing act. These are full size trees at the end of the day and if people are keeping them in pots is because they won’t to keep them small. By restricting the root ball this can be achieved. Thanks for the comment. Carl

Bonsai makers do use the type of substrate you’re mentioning. I’m not sure the maples enthusiast making this video has the same prerequisite. It’s harder to control the environment and much more care is required for a bonsai than simply growing a tree.

Thanks for this. I bought one of those water meters and tested my acers. Two of them are a bit wet even though I’m not watering them due to all the rain. So I’m going to repot them with some perlite and make bigger holes in the bottom. Thanks for sharing your tips.

Thanks for the info again. I have a hime shojo that does seem to have stopped growing since I re potted it. Compared to other acers that have grown fast. Also I did not know they are a bit more sensitive to too much water. I will try a smaller pot tomorrow.

Best to use terra cotta pots instead of plastic as plastic holds more water and you end up with root rots.

@@Japanesemaples Thanks! I should definitely get one next time I'm at Packhorse. It always catches my eye when I've been there and now even in videos too. 😂

Do you have to ring the nursery to order as I don't see any way you can purchase online? Oh forgot to say subscribed. :)

Thanks for subscribing 👍 Packhorse do not sell online unfortunately and Barthelemy only there very smallest trees. Hippopoting in the north of England gets good reports and have online availability 👍

Agh I need to get an extravaganza that's gorgeous! The little unglazed pots are great - I managed to get some soggy maples from BnQ and got them straight into them. Do you ever find newly potted maples can look a bit sulky the first year until they settle into their pot? (even if just slip potted)
@Japanesemaples
@Japanesemaples 2 месяца назад
Great question and I think it depends… if they are from a good nursery no, because the root system is in proportion to the top of the tree. The cheaper ones need a year for the roots to catch up with the over fed leaves and branches. Extravaganza is definitely cool 😎 Thanks for posting 👍

Roughly how many acer maples do you have in your collection? I am experimenting with fabric pots as they cost a lot less to up size. It would be too expensive to up size to terracotta pots every 2-3 years. Assume starting with 3L -> 5L -> 7L -> 10L ...etc
@Japanesemaples
@Japanesemaples 2 месяца назад
I guess I have around 70, I don’t even know exactly! Agreed it can cost for the pots, however it’s rather like a production line. The smaller pots are only £2 each the very biggest about £7. I can of course reuse pots for the next generation so to speak and root prune them at whatever stage when Im happy with their overall size. The cost is also spread by their different growth rates.

I just cant get my soil to dry out, the weather is just rain almost every day :( Maybe I have to fix something to stop the rain from getting in, can't have 16 trees in my house 😅
@Japanesemaples
@Japanesemaples 2 месяца назад
I’ve actually considered this… maybe a big sized bamboo shelter. Catching rain in the wet weather but offering shade from the sun ☀️ I’ve also considered some sort of pot cover, like a fan 🪭 but a complete circle ⭕️ 🤔
@XraycatNL
@XraycatNL 2 месяца назад
@@Japanesemaples Yeah I got a bunch of leftover planks, i'll prob just cut some half circles out of 2 and lay them over the pot lol. I really feel like I need to do at least something, it just wont stop raining it feels like.
@Lain3695
@Lain3695 2 месяца назад
@@XraycatNL if you have a garage or shelter it's worth it to save a completely sodden maple. I had to do emergency repot and 2 weeks indoor to save my bi-hoo

Hummm, I almost bought a water meter but until this video most people said they are not accurate. I have two JM seedlings with only their first true leaves and the very tips are brown. I think I will go ahead and pickup a water meter.
@Japanesemaples
@Japanesemaples 2 месяца назад
Water meters certainly are not like say a thermometer, properly calibrated to a known scale. I do think they give a general idea of moisture levels and as I have demonstrated, they can compare various trees. For the small outlay it’s a great investment 👍
