Mapping in Permaculture

Mapping can be done remotely, anywhere in the world for any location. Permaculture designers use a body of known facts-science-to find patterns for piecing together productive properties. In order to do so, we need to know everything about a site, not just location (distance from equator, altitude, distance from ocean) but also the specific features. We need to identify the strengths and limitations of a site to provide a harmonious, high-performance design. This digital mapping method shows every physical object-roads, waterways, buildings, trees, etc-on a site, as well as the contour lines, so that designers can recognize where best to put houses, gardens, food forests, roads, grazing areas, farm forestry, and reintroduced wild spaces. With that, we can create abundant cycles and ongoing fertility that will outlast us. Take a look at maps-satellite map, color elevation map, slope map-of Zaytuna Farm, Geoff Lawton’s 66-acre demonstration site to get a glimpse of what LIDAR mapping can do. LIDAR can be used for mapping individual properties, as well as communities, tracking the entire watershed around a region so each household can understand the full potential of their plot. That’s the ideal use for this technology!

In a few of my science class towards my degree, we were told " the best solution is dilution." We have concentrated our food production areas(monocropping hundreds of square miles)we live in cities where the concentration of people causes health and welfare problems. If we spread ourselves, gave ourselves elbow room, grew our food on smaller acreage, located very near, and even within higher population concentrated areas, the whole planet will be healthier.

People only listen to what they want to listen to, and are too self absorbed to be bothered with anything else… It’s not “if people would only listen”, it’s “how do we get more people to listen?”… Especially when you factor in how short their attention span is, and how quickly they move on to the next cat video on social media… Fear seems to be the biggest motivator for the masses, and they can only digest tiny sound bites at a time… They need to connect that fear to themselves and then understand that organic regenerative is the only solution to the real problem… That is the part that hasn’t happened yet…

I'm a new bee but I've learned that Permaculture is a good thing, and what I'd like to learn is everything about it, and exited that there's not a way, but a superb way out of this mess we are in. In fact just today (not knowing what's available) I was thinking of how to make a contour map of a site with simple surveying tools. My plan is to get some land out side the cities, somewhere in the south-west of the US. And thank you Mr Lawton for this great channel.

I took it to the next level and turned LIDAR data, street maps and satellite images into a 3D map that works inside the CRYENGINE game engine. LIDAR data is so accurate you can see where the sides of the roads are, and the driveway up to our house. It even knows where the dams are positioned. Since I'm writing my own game, I was able to drop a few blocks into place to represent the houses in the area, and mark out where I want to place swales. It also revealed very clearly some spots that would be great for dams. I can run around my virtual map with a human sized character, and get a real feel for how things could be in the future. You can see a really quick video snippet of it if you're interested. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-LpMnF1Urqo4.html

Great video...being in the Chihuahua Mexico semidesert...we only managed 1 mm of rain so far this year and probably that's all we will get. In the 1990s we had a thirteen year drought. We pump out ground water. It's important to not only map above ground water flow but also underground water flow. The amount of wells, their depths, their extraction rates need to be known to judge sustainability... also how contaminated the ground water is through agricultural runoff. It's pretty crazy how pecan orchards are being planted in our area and the amount of water that is required for a cash crop to sell to China or EAU.

More than a video, I suggest you start your journey by reading "PERMACULTURE A Designers Manual" by Bill Mollison. It has everything that you need. Then you can watch videos on RU-vid that will help you understand what they are talking about. Finally, if you want, you can take a Permaculture Design Course (PDC), even a free one is comprehensive enough to make your journey pretty fruitful. There are many free courses available online. 30 acres of land is reasonably big to handle if you do not have an understanding of the subject. All the best! I am trained in Permaculture and some more, and do have a decent experience of designing some agriculture properties in India.

Hey Geoff, thank you for the great explanation. Would really love a more detailed video on this as it is crucial for setting up farms in water restricted regions of the world. On a personal note: After two medium-sized projects in Turkey (3ha) where we did swale design using an A-frame, i am currently trying to figure out an optimal plan for how to approach a bigger earth healing project that uses a bit more efficient mapping technology. I have access to a drone from a friend but for contour mapping this is not enough. I need proper topographic data but rotation laser option (even renting one) is very costly and google earth doesn't have sufficient resolution. Are there other ways to get this high-resolution topographic data? Does software such as QGIS have more resolution or what do you use? I would love some more detailed tutorials on the mapping. Thank you a lot! ❤❤❤

Aren't focusing on water catchment practices, for example, no one believes that planting trees or brushes can help replenish ground water. Its a hard concept to grasp, i'm saving up to get a land to try some stuff on, but in the meantime i'm looking for any info i can use. kami no shimo be greening the desert-mma international. You seem to be in the same conditions. Basically you have to plant trees that grow very fast and produce lost of green matter. Cut them down and use the greens to cover the land. Use swales if you can. Use chickens to make compost. You are right. The trees will hold the water in their roots and create shade that can slow evaporation. With time they help to retain water and depending on the area, they can help create the streams. Oasis is the proof. Trees created the water streams not the other way around.

I think permaculture methods will be essential for this. I have joined Hipcamp to try and make some revenue, I work part time as a chef and would like to grow veg, maybe a bit of husbandry. I’m planing on growing some native edibles like pepper berry and snow berry, alpine raspberry ect. Any idea for some good crops to get ready for this spring. Cold climate 1000m above sea level, probably similar to the snowy mountains. Lots of glacial Dolerite and clay, some peat where rotting plant matter has decomposed.

Geoff: science is not a set of facts. Science is a process for testing the validity of a statement. A statement is not a fact if it hasn't been invalidated. It just hasn't been proven false. Big difference from what you state in this video.

Yusra Louhi you really don’t need lots of hectares to start. Start small and aging the skills. Even a small yard can become very productive if you do it right. Good luck!

Alda S thank you! 🌹 I have a very small garden in the middle of the city, it's not even 200 m2 ... Despite of the smallness i have many fruittrees and about 12 chicken. But my dreamlife would be at countryside with enough place to feed the whole family and help the poor. Because i think tough times are in front of us, the virus allways demonstrated that.

Not so organic of a means to environmental sustainability, more of intellectual-assisted means to environmentally sustainable design, but different means for different people, and it's not like these means are harmful now, right? So, critical acclaim given
