Holy crap where has this woman been on my RU-vid recommendations?! Damn she's got a great voice. Dark, soulful, and enough power it blew me away to see who it was singing.
when I finally got around to listening to Maroon 5s version, I realized this was far and away the better arrangement. I can't even fathom the reason their version was a hit. I think it put me in a coma.
I watched this video years ago when it first came out and probably a thousand times since. I still think Morgan is an amazing singer and in this video she is sooooo gorgeous 😍😍
She's superb, great and she has an immense talent for sure. I've seen her live in Montreal with PMJ a few years back and I am still in awe ! But whether your evaluation is overrated or not, you know damn well that's not how the entertainment industry works: artists are recognized at the Grammys for the numbers, nit only, or necessarily, their talent. Love her anyhow, of course ! ❤️
I personally don't care for M5 so if a band/group can make me like one of their songs, then I'd say it's better. But that's where the word "opinions" come into play.
They totally captured the essence of very early 1970's soul--hand's down. I can close my eyes and picture this song being sung around 1970-1971. It's that authentic. The original version by Maroon 5 doesn't hold a candle to this cover version.
+TheMobileMan So true! Morgan, the singers, and the band are fantastic! You can download this song along with more awesome covers at itunes.apple.com/us/album/historical-misappropriation/id914637609
I made the mistake of listening to this one before hearing the Maroon 5 version. Maroon 5 were phoning it in, even in the studio version. This is gorgeous.
If this version had been released in the 1970s, then it would have been an absolute smash. It is as good as any soul song released in that time period and far better than most. Morgan James would have been an absolute superstar.
How many amazing meals you miss out everyday because of 'food industry' just go out there and explore, not like people in previous generations had it any better.
@@dawidjagusiak This is a false equivalent on so many levels I can't be bothered explaining. Perfect example of 'if you have to ask you'll never know'.
One Shot: - Recorded continuously, presented without cuts. One Take: - Performed and recorded only once, presented with or without cuts or editing. We cannot know if this was done in one take, but done in one shot is still awesome!
Not to take anything away from Maroon 5... but I just hope they've listened to this interpretation of their song...and that they can admit that this is amazeballs. Absolutely amazing. Now, when I get Maps stuck in my head, it's this version that plays.
SchalaZeal You should see her live. She's phenomenal. I got to meet her in Tucson and told her I actually prefer her version of this song over Maroon 5.
I know this arrangement features Morgan as the lead singer, but as a choir girl from long ago, I have to say the back-up singers were phenomenal! Oh heck EVERYONE in this video kills it!
I understand why this would be a popular comment here, but most people like living in their own apartment because this means that they have some time for themselves. I listen to a lot of music and a lot of that music is in this style, but there are times when I am not in the mood for it. And at those times the last thing I would want was the muffled sound of a live band coming through my ceiling, no matter how awesome the music is. I just hope they deal with this in person rather than through lawyers. I mean, in theory it should be as simple as: DING DONG *Neighbour:* "Hello? Oh, it's you. Good to see you!" *Scott:* "Yeah, hi! About that music thing. I wanted to ask you if it was okay if I were to bring a few artists over to practice and record for about two hours on Thursday from five PM." *Neighbour:* "Thursday... That's not very good for me. I'll be home from work then and, frankly, I'd really like to have some time to settle down then. Do you have your calendar with you? I'm sure we can find a date." *Scott:* "Thanks. I'll go and fetch it real quick."
EPR89 Your a tool dude. Can't you see how the world shaped you to care more about getting a good nights rest for your job. Just appreciate the music you could never make.
EPR89 So these are recorded in an apartment with adjoining neighbours? It would drive you a bit nuts if it were happening regular wouldn't it, especially if it's good music and all you can hear is the muffled thudding. People saying they wouldn't mind have obviously never had noisy neighbours. Great singer by the way, very soulful
Dammit, I didn't read the full title, I just saw "Maps" and assumed this was a Yeah Yeah Yeahs cover. Oh well, still a good cover! Much better than the original.
I'm not much into pop music and this is the first version of the song I heard. Then I heard the Alyson Stoner version. Then with some searching, I heard the Maroon 5 version which isn't that good. It has a great, albeit disturbing, video and the lyrics are really good. This is a much better version than the original.

My two favorite also Shepherd...... I can't understand how somebody like Miley Cyrus or Britney Spears get all the fame and Glory.... When those two ladies Miss Reinhardt and Miss James have truck loads more Talent and vocal skills and you not getting here the recognition or money I presume...... What a f*****-up world we live in!!!!!
8 people in some guy's living room making better music than the vast majority of stuff that is "professionally" produced. This talent and most of all joy in the work they are doing is just incredible.
This probably Scott Bradley's living room in his NYC apartment. And since he was a music producer on Broadway he knew all the best talent & that's who he hired for these sessions. Everyone in that room is supremely talented! Most PMJ recordings were done in very few takes. Creep, with Haley Reinhart, was one take & done. Bradley just told her to sing it in a "jazzy" style. Over 100 million views!
Naah, after someone told something funny right before the recording cut in, she now tries to hide her smile, thinking "sad song, dead puppies, dead puppies".
for those who don't know, Morgan James is a broadway star. She is classically trained in voice and Classical opera singing at Juilliard School. Google more videos of her to see how good her techniques are. Don't compare her to these pop singers with no range or training. She's on a totally different league.
Geno Guerrero yea... now that you brought it up, id have to say Taylor has more soul than Morgan. It's just my opinion but i think that's something Morgan needs to work on even though her technique is flawless, but she's missing that ease and effortless thing that Taylor Dayne has.
This is like Mozart improving Salieri's little song. This utterly wipes the floor with the original. I had to go find it. I don't really care for Maroon 5. I had no clue. Truly incredible.
For so many many years I have been coming back to this incredible performance. Listened probably over 500 times and still at exactly 3:01 I close my eyes and feel connection to something bigger than this world. Thank you Morgan, thank you Scott, thank you all creating something this divinely beautiful. Did I already say thank you Morgan? Thank you Morgan 🙏❣
I've seen her live three times now at the Dakota in Minneapolis and can confirm. She sounds even better in person, she's absolute gorgeous, and very warm and friendly with her fans. I'll keep going back to see her for as long as I can get there.
This is very much in Joss Stone territory. Now you know the style Joss Stone sings if you never heard of Joss Stone. Lana requires a lot of reverb in the vocals.
She has a better voice than 99% of any singer i've ever heard in the mainstream media. It's crazy we get the garbage we do when all this real music and real performance is out there.
She’s actually a Broadway star Who was one of the youngest people accepted into Julliard When she was right out of high school. A lot of people don’t really know about her because she’s not a big name, but she’s been around for a while and is of course a great singer.
OMG...I can't express how phenomenal Morgan is. Her interpretation of this song is out of this world. Her tone, especially at the high register, coupled with her range from low to high is out of sight. All of this with no auto-tune. Amazing, just Amazing!
I like this better then the original songs go to fast and add technology in to distract from the lyrics I feel like I understand the song much better when sung with heart not machine.
I feel like you're arguing against effects, not technology. If you look around the room, there's a mess of wires and junk everywhere and that's definitely an electric bass. But even so, a ton of effects can sound good if done tastefully.
All post modern jukebox songs are done using original instruments with actual musicians. Whilst a lot of people write and record music using computers and programming, you CANNOT beat the real live feel of a band playing with great singers. Don't mean to diss the programmers out there as I also write with a pc! Peace.
Even still, it's being mixed and mastered on a computer. I have no doubts they filmed this live, but to think that it would sound like that from raw recordings is insanity.
Recording microphones, and of course they use computer to fix the soud a little bit, that's how you record a song in a studio. There are many ways to do it though.
