@Ice booy That's the point OP was trying to make, Maradona was supposed to be over the hill and past his prime, but he came back and rejuvenated an Argentina side that were full of potential but without a leader figure. I love Romario and think he is underrated, but that Golden Ball at the World Cup and subsequent player of the year award might have been very different if Maradona had stayed in that tournament. Diego looked like he was recapturing that same form which made him star in two consecutive World Cup tournaments.

I saw Diego in this match live, for the only time. I've see Messi twice in Australia. My impression was that Diego has more of a field general leadership quality. Even though he had just come back to football for this match, and had actually injured his right leg, in a play in the first half, I could still appreciate those qualities, and he did some genius things in this match, though brief by his standards because of his first half injury too, where otherwise he could have moved more around the field. He was a great and true genius!

@G M Messi is not a playmaker by any means, he's a scorer that can change positions, becoming a false 9 or a winger... You didn't watch Maradona play, or Cruyff or Michael Laudrup. Those were playmakers that eventually scored. They could make their teams play by his passing abilities and his reading of the plays, and by associating with their teammates. Messi is a dribbler, an individual focused player that eventually can associate with some guy, but his main quality is dribbling. That doesn't make you a playmaker AT ALL... and by the way, this era of football is weak, teams doesn't defend properly, rules are designed to favour offensive players, which I don't know why because the guy with the ball has always the advantage, so what is the reason to favour him even more? just because people wants to see goals, so even at champions league levels, you can see games of 5/6/8 goals... it's preposterous, nobody is allowed to defend and defenders don't know how to do it because they doesn't need to know how to do it, they just can't touch anybody in the pitch, it's ridiculous, annoying and appalling... and you're saying this is no sunday football? no, it's WORST keep wasting your little money in some Messi t-shirt and pathetic fifa games

In addition, holds the record for most fouled player in world cup history, to put that into context, the 2nd most fouled player is less than half the number of times Maradona was fouled. I guess however, you must know better at the danger he posed in world cups than his opponents. Every player during his era that I've heard in an interview has said he was by far the best player they played against, but again, I guess you must know more than them.
I remember this match like yesterday. I still have it somewhere on VHS, as I recorded it live. Would have went to the match, had I resided in Sydney. Just think about how many more times, Australia could have qualified for the world cup, had they not had to play off with a South American national squad, for how many decades.
@Azzury Street Im curious to know, what is your nationality? South America consistently has some of the strongest teams. I dont believe its fair that a country from Asia has to play off with a South American country. They have changed it to Asia which is fair. Majority of teams from Asia, Africa etc are consistently inferior to South American teams. As a consequence, we have unfairly been unsuccessful at qualifying. I'd also like to address to you that football/soccer is not the main sports code in Australia. There is Australian Rules Football (AFL), Rugby (NRL), Cricket etc. Qualifying or not qualifying for the World Cup directly affects the popularity & progress of the game. Nor did we have any Australian Clubs competing in the Asian Champions League until recently. All we looked forward to was qualifying for the World Cup every 4 years. They are doing there best to suppress the progress of football/soccer here. There is much more coverage of AFL, Rugby, Cricket etc in the newspapers, media. The largest stadiums are reserved for AFL, cricket, rugby. Many clubs are being rejected by councils when requesting pitches to play the game. Its quite odd & frustrating to think that England (who invented the game), colonized this country, yet failed to introduce this game. If I had a time machine, the first thing I'd do is go back & make sure that football is the only code played in this country or atleast the most popular.

It's an award offered by a French sports magazine, highly respected (don't know the name). The FIFA world player of the year award, wasn't even started until 1991, which is when maradona was both banned and past his absolute best. So to compare to Messi on that count, doesn't really count,if no such award even existed back then, when maradona was doing all the things that made him famous around the world.

Fifa wanted Argentina to be in the US world cup in 1994. Argentina is a great contestant and a football attraction. It helps sell football and advertising etc.... So, there wasn't any doping check after the game. Maradona declared that the Argentine delegation gave the players a substance to swallow so as they could win at any expense.
