Kenneth Anderson pursues a man-eating tiger in the forest-clad hills of the Melagiri range in Southern India with its origins, in the small hamlet of Kempekarai. Together with his two henchmen, Byra and Ranga, Anderson makes a series of improvised attempts to get to the tiger, while fighting to save his own life on a couple of occasions.

The atmosphere Anderson creates in his stories along with the image he projects of himself as being completely indifferent to danger, is why his stories are so enjoyable. Thank you, for reading them so very well!

Blimey, this might be one of my all time favourites, and I've never heard it before! Definitely the best of Anderson. It's odd to me that he is no where near as well-known or revered as Corbett...certainly in 'Western' circles. I would assume that his deep and steeped relationship to the local Indians, who he made sure to acknowledge and elevate, was what gave Corbett more of a lasting legacy in the history of the sub continent, whereas (although this is certainly a simplification) Anderson was known more for his books and nothing deeper - although, again, that is probably grossly unfair. I also wondered if they ever met, seeing as there would be a cross-over of 40 years or so in their lives. Fantastically well-read Mr Singh; great emphasis and speed at the right times and I enjoyed the jungle sounds too. Thank you. Ben
@selvalore
@selvalore Год назад
I will agree with you Ben. Mr. Anderson could never quite get to the degree of popularity and esteem accorded to Mr. Corbett and has always been in his shadow as far as success with the written word goes too. I can say with a good amount of certainty that they never met. Corbett's exploits are legendary, well documented and corroborated by secondary sources. As you are aware, he was very close to the seat of power in British India, so many prominent officials and administrators were part of circle of friends (Indian as well as British) besides being close to the local, common villager as well.

At 20:51 he says a normal tiger will not leave a tempting, unguarded bait alive. Then, at around 22:19 he says that a tiger rarely ever kills wantonly. Perhaps what he should have said was that tigers are intelligent and temperamental animals, just like all other cats, that they enjoy killing whenever it suits them; that sometimes they will eat their kills and at other times they do the deed and move on, not feeding on it or even returning to it later. That kind of thinking does not, of course, apply to maneaters which are usually highly intelligent regarding humans and are much, much harder to correctly identify and kill unless they are killed while eating a human corpse. Anderson was no daisy....and that's a fact.

@selvalore
@selvalore Год назад
You're right! These were written in the 50s and the scientific consensus was maybe not so well established on these things and Anderson, much like Corbett who also claimed Tigers have no sense of smell, were going purely on their field experiences.

In my opinion, Anderson has tried to copy Jim Corbett's descriptive writing style instead of inventing his own. Be that as it may, he never achieved the fame of Jim Corbett. However, in Kenneth's favor, I think that some of his adventures and bravery surpass Corbett's.
