it's probably been mentioned, but 90º vs 45º corresponds to the angle you're supposed to hold the controller at while playing. 90º maps the angle of the controls to the standard way of holding the nes controller horizontally; 45º maps the angle of the controls to assume you are holding the controller at a 45º (or diagonal) angle instead, with the d-pad directions literally corresponding to the 3/4 perspective that the game is set in. 90º assumes the d-pad is like this: + whereas 45º assumes the d-pad is like this: ×
+Lars “B” Amble I was literally looking through the comments to see if anyone had mentioned that yet before I did so. I remember it because once you get used to the odd manner the controller sits in the hand playing that way it makes the game a solid 50% to 80% easier because of control intuitiveness compared to the 90º layout. Still doesn't touch the original arcade trackball though.
I played this game a LOT on our old Amiga 500, and playing it with a mouse was the closest you could get to the arcade experience I'd say. There also was a very similar game to this on the Amiga 500, called simply "Rock'n'Roll" where you also steered a ball by mouse movement through different mazes and puzzles, soundtrack for that game was done by Chris Hülsbeck, but you hardly see the game anywhere unfortunately, it's soooo great though with such a great soundtrack
YES! I own two copies of this game and use to try to aim for the world record. Back 10 years ago I could get in the top 10 on some random online list. I can still beat the game but can't get anywhere near having 99 seconds at the start at almost level.
Have you seen the current world record? It seems impossible for me, he is using some shortcuts where I have no idea how to make this. What is your record on this game, my is 128,200 Points.
Puddin Laugh I know I was at least around there. I played it on an emulator (xbox) and used saved states to practice areas. When I'd break out the NES for a real run I could usually beat the game without dying and keep near 99 for most boards.
That was one of the most intense gaming sessions I've watched in a while. Reminds me of when my best friend and I would trek through old beat 'em ups. Thanks for this awesome video.
I especially liked that there were 5 attempts and you played through til victory. Typically videos like this (and ones on this channel even) end after the 2nd or so attempt and without completion. Bravo.
90 and 45 correspond how you hold the controller. 90 is holding the controller as you normally would. 45 is holding the controller at a 45 degree angle. The idea is that holding the controller at 45 degrees, the d-pad is aligned with the isometric view better.
I loved playing Marble Madness as a kid, one of the few games from my childhood covered by Cinemassacre. While many kids had mainstream gaming platforms like the NES, SNES, Genesis, Gameboy, etc, I had the Amiga, the PC, and eventually the Nintendo 64 (thanks to my older brother saving up for it with income from one of his early jobs). Anybody remember Magic Pockets, made by The Bitmap Brothers?
I love this game! Finally managing to beat it is one of my best gaming memories from when I was a kid. I even have an unopened copy of it now in my collection. :-D
The 45 degree option is because the isometric graphics are at a 45 degree angle. The trick with it is to hold the controller at a 45 degree angle, then it matches what you see on screen but the up / down / left / right controls follow the grid lines, rather than needing to use the diagonals all the time. But, in the end, it's a personal preference thing. You don't really gain any advantage from it, but some folks just find it easier.
the "Everything you know is wrong" in the Silly Race means that uphill is downhill and vice versa for that level. the marble gets pulled up hill and struggles going downhill.
Marble Madness and Yo Noid! were my first 2 video games ever! Then Super Mario Bros. and Super Mario Bros. 3...I started playing when I was 3. I completed Marble Madness when I was 20, SMB 3 when I was 14, SMB when I was 18, and I still have yet to beat Yo Noid!
+Benobot99 Odd how the same phrase makes people think of different things, because I thought of (other than the obvious actual rings around Saturn), the wrestling move of that name :P
Classic commercial for this game; 'Do you have what it takes to reach the silly maze, where everything's upside down? Or the ultimate maze, where even the maze moves?'
if im not mistaken, there is a fan made or i think an indie 3D-Graphics version of this game called "Rolling Madness 3D" created by Luca Elia, this actually uses 3D and in fact its programed all in OpenGL, and is a pretty accurate version of Marble Madness, it uses the mouse like it was a trackball, more like you could do in MAME with the arcade version, i never used to play it with controlers because its kinda unconfortable because a controler doesnt have that liberty with how much you can turn your ball.
When I was a kid I really wanted this game I remember asking for it for Christmas and my Birthday and I never got it. My self and my friend rented it one weekend and I discovered how hard it was but it was still a blast.
I love the music for this game; honestly those, I can only make it to the second stage, and that's for that version on the "Midway Arcade Treasures" PS2 disc.
Kinda has Snake Rattle 'n' Roll feel. I hate games like these 95% of the time but somehow it kinda looks fun, maybe because it reminds me of Snake Rattle 'n' Roll. Even sound when you go over ledge is very similar.
I love this game and still have it here as well. Some one should remake Marble Madness I would play the heck out of it if they did original levels plus added a bunch more and a level editor.
Love this game but very frustrating, once I start playing it's really hard to turn it off. Love the Monkeyballs game and especially the game called MarbleMania on the Wii. Great playing guys.
In 45-degree mode you're supposed to hold the controller at a 45-degree angle so that the D-pad arrows point in the same direction as most of the paths in the levels.
I played this game nonstop about a year ago. My buddy and I beat the known world record for this game. Unfortunately we didn't have it recorded so it doesn't count lol.
